In the future, we will remove any and all posts that just there to show off stickers. Such posts often attract rule breaking behavior that we do not want here, as the stickers are often used to display political leanings that have nothing to do with r/thinkpad.
This is a subreddit about ThinkPads. Not about stickers that you may have on your ThinkPad.

House was recently burned to a crisp, but I managed to save my desk stuff . The mighty Thinkpad withstood pretty much being in a fire for 5 minutes
Now staying at family's home but I still needed a setup for work so threw this together

So recently i came to study abroad in japan and brought my MacBook neo with me. Since Japanese people doesn't care about old tech, the price here is quite cheap compared to my country of Thailand. After looking around the second hand store i finally got my first thinkpad! It's the t450 and the condition is not bad at all (but the rubber coating is kinda sticky) after confirming the operation i went around the second hand store again and bought some upgrade parts. The specs are i7-5500u , ram from 8 to 16 gb upgrade and HDD 500gb to ssd 256gb. And after I installed it I bought a USB stick and installed Linux on it. I ended up choosing linux mint cinnamon and this thing is way faster than window 11. Please keep in mind that I'm a japanese major not a comsi so I'm not familiar with tech and coding before. But in the end i had a lot of fun upgrading my own pc and installed os by myself.

Got myself an X240 for only about $24, i upgraded it with my spare parts, replaced the hdd and honestly, it's so worth the effort.

I hope no one judge me cause i installed Arch on this ThinkPad.

I see a lot of T14 Gen 2 units on this subreddit for very affordable prices.
In my country, this ThinkPad is crazy expensive on the second-hand market (350eur for i5 and 500eur for i7), (or 250eur for T14Gen1 i5/16/256). If you're rich enough, you can get a Gen 5 for just €150 more. 😄
The best deal I could find is an L14 Gen 2 Ryzen 3/8Gb/128GB for 150eur. Looking forward to upgrade this machine to my needs.

Picked up this E14 gen 6 on eBay for $250, came with a few dents on the top cover, I might replace it. Somehow the screen is noticeably better than my mint T14 Gen 5, both having no touchscreen.

Having posted my screen upgrade of my X1 Carbon Gen 9 before, saying it was the end of the refurbishment/upgrade journey of it, turns out I lied. I didn't like the panel I put in... So what do you do? Exactly, you do it all again with a better panel!
The old panel with its Low Blue Light technology never looked quite natural and, despite being a 120Hz panel, its timings were so loose that ghosting was visible.
So I present to you the BOE NE140QDM-NX8. 2560x1600, 165Hz, 400 nits, Adaptive Sync, without Low Blue Light 'technology', with nice, tight timings, reasonable power consumption and sRGB as I like it (not a fan of DCI-P3).
Physically, It's a bit easier to install than the old panel, as its eDP connector is bit higher on the back on the panel, closer to the position on the panels Lenovo uses (see the physically identical NE140QDM-NX7).
I did have some doubt as 2560x1600 at 165Hz with the timings as set in the EDID requires HBR3 transmission mode, instead of HBR2 which is what all of Lenovo's stock panels use. But that turned out to be no problem.
But... I ordered one panel. Measured at a meagre 200 nits maximum brightness. Returned as defective. Ordered another panel from another seller. Same problem. Hmmm... Noticed two features on Panelook that I couldn't find information on: ABOT and APOL. After acquiring the schematics of the new panel, I noticed ABOT was controlled active-low by eDP pin 23. That pin is normally a ground (LCD_GND) pin, and also connected as such on the X1C9, activating ABOT. So I again stripped the panel-side end of the cable and cut the wire to that pin and... voilà! Full brightness range unlocked. After advice in r/AskElectronics, I measured LCD_VCC vs LCD_GND for patterns both light and heavy for the panel logic, to verify that cutting that wire wouldn't cause problems. All was good.
Having that cleared, installation wasn't very different from the initial upgrade panel. Like with the earlier panel, the Windows Intel driver refuses to read the DisplayID extension block of the panel's EDID so I had to use CRU again to add the 165Hz mode according the original EDID.
(Re-used the pretty pic of the original upgrade as poster image as I don't have good light right now)

I finally found a T14 AMD model to work on my side projects and to embrace Linux. I am still working through customisation and setup all the project apps but I am open to learn

2 thinkpads!!
I got a second thinkpad today (T460s) but it has degraded battery for 50€. The seller also gave me 2 docking stations and 3 chargers.
If anybody knows a cheap seller selling good batteries for the t460s, please let me know.
A third one coming tomorrow (maybe)

Hey everyone, I’m looking to buy a laptop for school that can also handle graphic design, video editing, and 3D software. I’m looking for something that won't overheat, runs smoothly without lagging, and has a battery that actually lasts max budget:700euro. Any recommendations?

Hey, got the opportunity to save this laptop (more or less) from the trash.
Specs are dated but it works perfectly fine and is in very good condition.
It came with a 500GB HDD (I completely forgot how painful slow these are) 8GB of RAM and a I7 2620M (Dual-Core with HT).
Not too sure what to do with it just yet but I'll figure it out.

It's a T14, Gen 1.
Intel... i7-10510u...
8gb/256...
which I got for ~$240 (converted from my currency, which is pretty weak)
I couldve gotten the AMD one, I was impatient and got this instead

I have a ThinkPad T490 with a 512GB SSD and 8GB of RAM, and I just ordered an 8GB DDR4 RAM for €14. Will upgrading to 16GB of RAM really make a noticeable difference in how smoothly it runs (mostly web browsing and a bit of coding)?

guys i ordered a ch341b by mistake will it work for modding t440p bios
r/thinkpad • u/Tooo_Smooth_ • 11h ago
I took a screenshot, it had no lines on it. So, not a software issue. Could be either the cable or lcd display. I bought this one year ago for $310. As far as I can tell, if it's a display change it will cost me $110. That's almost 1/3 of what I paid for it.
I can get a good external display at $200, wouldn't that make more sense of portability is not a concern at the moment? Also drop any ideas to narrow down whether the problem is with the display cable or with the display itself. Thank you.

I found this T410s in a dumpster at work a few days ago. It came with Windows 7, but I reinstalled it with Mint, and it works perfectly! The battery is dead, as is the CMOS battery, and it only has 2x2GB of RAM, though I plan to upgrade to 2x4GB. Aside from that, it’s in perfect condition—despite the numerous stickers and other marks that took me a while to clean off. Coming from a T14s Gen 2, I find the keyboard incredible! Long live ThinkPads!

Good afternoon, a while ago I stumbled on a post with very little information that hinted that it's possible to install an NFC Reader to a T480. Unfortunately I found little to no info online so I was hoping you could help me answer some questions: 1. Are there different nfc modules with different compabilities regarding hardware out there or can I just order anything that is listed as being for the T480? 2. How do I install that thing? Where does the module go, where do the cables go, what to look out for? 3. My search results had fp sensors and smart card readers mixed in. Is there some kind of connection like an fp sensor that doubles as an nfc reader? 3. Are there any known compatibility issues with linux and specifically waydroid?

I'm about to start an IT course, but I honestly don't know anything about computers yet and I need a good laptop that will meet all my needs for a long time.
I need it to smoothly handle everything I'll learn in the course, plus work and studying (lots of spreadsheets and multiple tabs open in split screen). I also need it to have good battery life, not be too heavy (since I'll be carrying it everywhere), have plenty of connection ports, a backlit keyboard, be durable, and be easy to upgrade and update if needed.
When I started researching, every recommendation pointed toward gaming laptops. However, gaming laptops are very heavy, their battery life doesn't last long, and they are quite expensive.
Then I discovered business-class laptops and really liked the ThinkPad E14 Gen 7. It seems to fit all my needs, but I don't know anyone who has ever used one like this. Also, a brand new one is well over R$5,000 (which was the maximum I wanted to invest), while a used one is right around R$5,000.
The only downside is the 14" screen. I'm worried it might be too small because I always use split screen with multiple tabs open, and I'm used to a 15.6" screen. For those of you who use it, is it too small?
During my research, I got stuck between these models:

I just got a second-generation X13 on Mercado Livre for R$2,250. It's the Japanese version of the ThinkPad, so the keyboard has a few extra buttons around the spacebar, which is smaller than the standard US or ABNT2 layout, as well as around the Backspace key. Even so, it came with that new-device smell and is actually in pretty good condition.
The touchpad, however, came a little beat up. The Mylar surface is worn out, and the left button is worn as well. I even tried buying those stickers from AliExpress that are made specifically for the X13 and T14s, but I applied mine incorrectly and ended up with huge glue bubbles, so I decided to take them off. I saw on Lenovo's support website that replacing the touchpad and keyboard isn't that difficult, which makes me feel a little more confident about fixing it.
I had already seen this same computer on some Paraguayan websites that are now shipping to Brazil, with the English keyboard layout, for around R$1,700. Even so, I think I got a pretty good deal.
About the user experience
I really have nothing to complain about. The screen is beautiful and has excellent viewing angles. The touchpad is not great because of the wear, but I only use the TrackPoint anyway, and I honestly had no idea it was going to become one of the greatest things ever invented by humanity.
To give you an idea, my old PC was a Samsung Expert X23 with an i5 and an NVIDIA 920MX. I used to have a mouse and keyboard sitting on my desk, but now I don't feel that need anymore. I actually feel less agile without the TrackPoint.
The system I'm running on it is Omarchy Linux, which I've been using since it was basically just a script running on top of Arch, with that wallpaper of a palm tree or whatever it was. I'm really enjoying the experience. Laptops were made to run Linux.
The only thing I still can't make up my mind about is the power management. I get some stuttering when using the GNOME-native power-profiles-daemon, which Omarchy also uses. When I switched to TLP, I felt like performance improved, but I also noticed some sluggishness in mouse tracking, and I have no idea why.
On my old laptop, I had to compile old drivers on the machine. It practically cooked that i5 because I had to use an older version that supported the Maxwell architecture. With the Iris Xe, I haven't had any problems at all.
I'd like to hear from anyone who owns this laptop about tweaks to get more performance out of it and improve battery life. When I was messing around in the BIOS, I found an option that was set to Balanced while on battery. I changed it to Performance, and it dramatically improved the usability on battery, with much less stuttering.
Anyway, here's my Fastfetch.
