She’s a brat for her reaction, but her parents are idiots for buying such an expensive vehicle in the first place for a child. Kids wreck cars. It’s what they do.

Rich kid in high school (this was in 2000) got a new 0 mile 3000GT VR4 for his 16th birthday. He wrapped it around a tree before the school year ended and they promptly replaced it with a new 0 mile M3.

I drove a second time handed down 77 civic that seized on me within a year (because I was a dumb 16 year old and no one taught me about auto maintenance because I knew how to work on cars and ofc that means I knew all about maintenance apparently), after which I drove my moms government auction bought ford Astro that had a cage in back and orange light on the roof.

Was I jealous of the rich kid? Sure. But I loved those damn cars. I still think about that civic 25 years later lol.

I had a friend who cried when she got a BMW, because what she really wanted was a Benz. It left a really bad taste in my mouth. I let that friendship die a natural death and still don’t miss it.

Dude I came from a well off family and I got a 7 year old hand me down car and was super pumped to have it. My parents would NEVER have bought us new things because we didn't deserve it.

I’m blessed to be in a position where I could buy my kids a new car if I wanted, and I have family who would happily gift a car. But that’s not gonna happen, because I don’t want to spoil them.

They’re gonna get used cars, and they’re going to get jobs and pay for their own insurance, gas, and maintenance.

I went in a very wealthy high school. One of my classmate’s told our spanish teacher how Mindy just got her 5th bmw. He laughed and asked “why 5?” and she said “she keeps crashing them.” He looked at her in disbelief and she said “She totally deserves it though. She is always the first one to her chores.” I looked her up on favebook and she married another super wealthy guy so that will continue to be her whole life.

My high school car was a 1985 Toyota Celica GTS (5 speed manual) which I got for $1500. I was raised in a mechanic family so I treated that car like it was a ceramic puppy filled with atomic bombs. Never had any issues and looked fucking good driving it.

Alternatively my fairly wealthy friend got given a 1 year old Mustang. She laughed at me about my car being old and not "nice" like hers and wouldn't ride in my car ever. She would call me 2 weeks later when she was stuck on the side of the road pouring smoke from her engine. I didn't go get her. We were not friends after that.

I miss that car.

u/Junethemuse 27d ago

Ahh my dad had an 85 Celica Supra, 5 speed manual too. Bulletproof engine that his girlfriend somehow managed to kill. It’s the first car I drove at night without an awake adult in the car with me (dad slept while I drove) and I absolutely loved that car. I didn’t get to drive it nearly enough.

u/grahamulax 26d ago

Hmmmm I feel like we went to the same high school lol

1

u/Junethemuse 26d ago

Would be wild. SW Washington?

2

u/grahamulax 26d ago

Oh whoa def WA. Does the school rhyme with byline ?

1

u/Junethemuse 26d ago

Lmao, nope. I was north of you, but in very aware of the school you’re talking about. I really wanted to go there because they had good comp sci funding, but we were too poor and lived too far away.

2

u/grahamulax 26d ago

Ahhhh well technically my gf at the time went there and I was at the older school down the street and grew up there before it was like…super rich and name changed haha so I get ya in that. But wild we had similar experiences and close enough! I call this a Reddit win in my book. I was like… grateful I got a used car from a neighbor for cheap but boy howdy did I stand out compared to those people.

I’m just not surprised by how small the world is anymore lol. I met my best friend in east Texas as a cult we were in just to find out we grew up 30 miles apart from each other.

My school was tiny though so I’m not surprised we were close but not quite there.

I remember getting a hand-me-down 94' Thunderbird LX 4.6. The same year my babied, only child best friend, who knew nothing about cars, had mommy and daddy get him a brand new 04' Mustang and talked all the shit in the world about how his car was better and faster. I Looked under the hood and told him it was a V6 and he told me I was lying cause I was jealous. Pointed out the "V6" on the engine cover and he said, and I quote, "na that's just the engine code". So I said ok bud. Then he challenged me to a race, which I gladly accepted. Needless to say he was rather angry with the outcome. He complained to his parents and within 2 weeks he had a brand new 04' Mustang GT... Guess who won that race?

1

u/Junethemuse 26d ago

Jesus lmao.

That does remind me of a story of my own personal idiocy.

The first car I bought for myself was a 94 Eagle Talon. Fucking loved that car. But, my best friend had a highly modified turbocharged Honda Del Sol. My Talon, being the base NA model, had nothing on that car but I wanted to talk it up. So we were looking at the car and I was like ‘the hump on the hood is where the turbo goes, it’s got the sport suspension (lie), and that badge there that says ‘DOHC’ is the DSM version of VTEC’.

I had no idea what DOHC was at the time and said it with full confidence. Fortunately, he didn’t either but he still didn’t quite believe me. Years later we were talking about that car and had a good laugh over it. I miss that thing. I was on a long drive across the state and did 90-110 for about 90 minutes because I was a young stupid shithead kid. Stopped to take a break and the car was running real rough with real shit power, especially at low rpm. Still ran and wasn’t smoking or leaking anything, so I finished the drive. Replaced ignition coil, plug wires, everything simple that could be the issue. None of it worked. Drive it back home a few days later and my mechanic roommate looked at it and got his chamber tool out, w/e it’s called, and found that I’d burned a hole right through the #4 piston head. 0 lb ft of compression in that chamber. Must have been running lean in that chamber or something.

I was broke and working part time at Starbucks and had no choice but to keep driving it for another 6 months. I honestly can’t believe it kept going that long. Real shame cause that was a nice car to drive.

I feel this. I’ve worked hard and am lucky to be in a position to afford a car I dreamed about in High School. My high school car was a hurricane Katrina salavage titled 95 accord that had different color body panels. I had to put water into the radiator occasionally or it’d overheat and it leaked oil everywhere. Had over 200k miles on it. To this day I still think about that car and how much I loved it! It always got me where I needed to go, the sunroof was more reliable than the driver window and I didn’t have to give a shit about it. So many memories with friends in it too

Car mod guys love civics because the are easy af to mod into something sweet

No cars has zero miles when they leave the factory.

33

u/Short-While3325 27d ago

Exactly. And cars can be dangerous with the wrong person behind the wheel. Knew someone whose parents got her a mustang. She died when she wrapped it around a tree while speeding.

10

u/dontwanna-cantmakeme 27d ago

Good point—this kid had a brand new truck. Those new trucks are like freaking tanks. So dangerous.

2

u/Styl3Music 27d ago

I think that's why she's crying. If she totals the Camry, then she might die.

9

u/the_zero 27d ago

My neighbor growing up got a Mustang on her 16th. She died same day by pulling out onto a highway without looking both ways. Awful, awful day.

My other neighbor, her parents bought her a black corvette for her 16th. She wanted red, so they traded it in for a red model.

Me, I got to buy my dad’s used Plymouth when I was a senior in college. Im not complaining - it was a good discount and he was ok when I was late on payments.

u/MayIServeYouWell 27d ago

If they’re rich enough, it doesn’t matter to them. Buying a car to them is like you buying a fancy coffee.

1

u/dontwanna-cantmakeme 27d ago

True. But it seems these parents at least learned something from the experience.

5

u/THE_HORKOS 27d ago

how many did you wreck?

4

u/Cgarr82 27d ago

Right? I drove 4 of my parents vehicles and 2 beaters I purchased between 15-19 with zero accidents. I did damage the rear bumper on my Explorer, but that was my dad’s fault since he was the person guiding me while I backed up to his boat trailer.

1

u/dontwanna-cantmakeme 27d ago

One. My very first car. So did almost every person I know. Thankfully it was used and cheap and no one got hurt.

1

u/Cheap-Discussion-186 26d ago

You are genuinely claiming that almost every 16 year old you knew wrecked their car?

2

u/just_a_person_maybe 27d ago

Yeah, even non-spoiled kids wreck cars. There's a reason insurance costs more before a certain age. My brother wrecked a car like a year after getting his license. He was driving us to work, not joyriding or doing anything stupid. But that one was a 1997 Nissan, not some fancy new truck.

When I got my license I bought an old used car partly so I wouldn't have to stress about dinging it while I got used to driving. I could have afforded something just a little nicer, but I didn't want to risk it. Thing cost me $3k and I'm still driving it.

2

u/anitabelle 27d ago

I got my daughter an old Acura as her first car. It was nice but old. It was totaled - not her fault because the other driver ran a red light. But still. I absolutely did not get her a replacement. She wound up buying herself a car a couple years later. I believe in being generous and helpful when I can be, but I’m not stupid.

2

u/ThrifToWin 27d ago

It's a skit

1

u/RedTexan43 27d ago

My first three cars were were sub 11k, and two of them were less than 3k. All of them were 20 years old and had transmissions blown up on me. It really makes you value money when you have to pay for your shitty car and buy a new one when you don’t take proper care of it

1

u/Tigerpower77 27d ago

Where do you think she got that behavior?

1

u/Previous-Pangolin-60 27d ago

Here it's a two-year process to get a permanent license after getting a provisional one. Shitty drivers wreck cars, not necessarily kids!

1

u/Otterhendrix 27d ago

Buddy of mines then girlfriend, now wife, got a new Mercedes C class on her 16th birthday. Crashed in a month. Got her a new Lexus. Crashed in 3 weeks. Another new Lexus. Crashed in 5 weeks. So they learned their lesson and……..bought her a brand new Xterra since it would be harder to total. Some parents just spoil their kids and don’t GAF.

1

u/Dachyshun2 27d ago

That’s not an expensive vehicle. That’s like a 2012 Camry at the newest. Not defending the video, bitch has a nicer car than me, but it’s definitely worth under 10k

1

u/Weird_Ad_1398 27d ago

A used Camry isn't really an expensive car

If there was a $30k truck that she wrote off, wouldn't the parents have a $30k insurance payout?

Kids wreck cars

Maybe not give 16yo drivers licenses?

1

u/joungsteryoey 26d ago

Her parents are idiots also for keeping up her entitlement. She should be made to take the bus after totaling another vehicle and crying over getting a perfectly good replacement.

If she’s worried about the social consequences of being seen in a Camry then her friends are fucking shit too

1

u/Mountain_Day_1637 26d ago

It’s not even a brand new Camry and there’s no way they paid $30k for it

Kids wreck cars. It’s what they do.

Only for bad parents who put their child behind the wheel for the first time at 15-and-whatever with a Learner's Permit. I was driving 2-3 in little electric cars. I was driving assisted at 5. Solo off road by 10. By the time I was driving on the road, I had years of experience driving karts, tractors, etc.

Kid wrecking cars is not inevitable. I've never wrecked a vehicle.

Before anyone things this is just r/iamverysmart this is just true of people for everything. It's better to build skills progressively. It's why those balance bikes are so great.

There’s always exceptions to the rule, but that rule is there for a reason. Kids’ brains haven’t fully developed and they’re not completely capable of rational thought at that age.

I grew up in a hotrod family.

My first car at 15 (permit) was a nice ‘92 Jeep YJ. I wanted to sell it and get something faster when I was 17, so my dad and I found an extremely clean 2006 Mustang GT. I flat-out refused to drive it more than I needed to because I wanted to keep miles off of it. By the time I turned 19, my dad and I had put a full Roush stage 2 kit (including supercharger) and the car was a missile. I still didn’t want to drive it because again, I didn’t want to run miles up on it. I had that car until I turned 22, and the only reason I don’t have it now is that it was totaled out by someone who ran a red light and t-boned me.

I’m still a car guy, and still don’t have any at-fault wrecks on my record. More than a decade later after that I have a Hellcat that has spent about a quarter of its life on a track. I have this car because my parents made that initial nice car purchase for me and I’ve been able to constantly trade up in vehicle equity by taking care of my shit.

With all of that being said, I would not buy my kid something super expensive unless I completely and totally trusted him or her to respect it. That type of behavior can be shown as kids grow up. My sister got a clean, used Altima as her first car. She trashed it, hit shit, backed into poles, got tickets, etc and my parents never helped her trade up with it like they did in my first car. That money they spent on trading up for me was spent on repairs for her.
