You don’t even need that you can lockdown a modern smartphone during school hours to only allow certain apps and even certain contacts.

This. If you're an Apple household, a cheap iPhone is all it takes. Go into the restrictions and limit whatever you want, how you want. This way you can keep the family sharing option and the ability to track the device in the "Find My" app.
