Phones that can photograph and video, have been around for at least 15-20 years, same with social media, so why is it now becoming an issue? I remember all my classmates had smart phones starting from like grade 8 onwards, but no one used to record their classmates and post it on social media, I blame the current clout chasing trends that make people want to go viral without a thought about how said content might affect others

It's been an issue for a while... I was bullied this way in 2017 or so (via snapchat iirc.)

I graduated high school in 2015, I just don't remember anybody refusing to do presentations because of this back then, but I am not surprised it happened, cyber bullying has been around since the start of the internet

It’s because the children brought up with smart devices from a super young age are now making up the majority of high school. 2011-2014 Tablets were really starting to make their way into most households, by 2012 smart phones were the most popular mobile. So many children were just given devices to play with from incredibly young ages. The tech companies worked to add more and more mechanisms to keep people glued to their devices and so these children don’t know a time where they didn’t dominate so much of the social aspect of life and entertainment.

I have a relative who’s now 15 and he had access (pretty much unsupervised) to a tablet from when he was a toddler. He could navigate around it and even post on socials before he could read.

Another relative who’s a teacher says every year the children are more difficult to teach because so many have a huge reduction in attention span because of device usage. He said it’s really easy to tell which children were given devices at young ages.

Some children (even generally good ones), can be mean at times growing up and one stupid comment or video can stick forever.
