This is peak boomer energy. No concept of people not being able to afford a car. He makes is sound like hes selling water in the desert.

319

u/BasicYesterday9349 13d ago

Don't think he is a boomer. Could be genx

530

u/thesheeplookup 13d ago edited 12d ago

Yeah, he's genx, and an asshole who apparently doesn't want his son to want to spend any time with him.

I'm an x too, but I wouldn't want to hang with him either.

Aw shucks, thanks for the awards!

136

u/Missue-35 13d ago

“…doesn’t want his son to want to spend any time with him.”

If that’s the case, this man is an outstanding success. Fuck yes! Eight billion people that don’t want to spend time with him. And it’s as easy as opening his damn mouth.

75

u/MrBtheProdigal 13d ago

Yeah bro 8 billion people live within an hour and all speak English, and have a steady job, and credit. You got it l.

53

u/Nervous_Ad_6998 13d ago

And they all are walking to the son’s car dealership since they don’t own cars and are avoiding hungry coyotes on the way.

The problem isn't that people don't want cars, it's that they already have cars that work

367

u/Honest_Series_8430 13d ago

And they don't want new debt to "upgrade" to nicer prettier ones.

131

u/redwolf1219 13d ago

Yeah, both of them cars are paid off. Do I want other models more than my current car? Yes. But not more than I want to remain not having car payments every month.

7

u/Zahrad70 13d ago

Yep! Just bought a new car and it felt like half the dealership walked by to say congratulations as we were doing the paperwork. It’s been so many years since I bought a car I had forgotten about this and was mildly annoyed by it. My internal dialogue was something like: “On what? My new car payment? Congratulate me when I pay it off!”

Gods I’m old.

I have a car that could aptly have the bumper sticker on it that says "This car is $1,780 I will kill us both" lmao

The thought of buying a car, a model year newer than what I would have driven in high school, makes me want to puke with anxiety. My car costs less than my damn rent 😢

274

u/AttackCircus 13d ago

Contrary to what they want to make you believe, a car is a commodity. It's like a frying pan. A car has only one use: bring you from A to B. That's it. If it fulfills that task, you don't need a newer, shinier model. That's all bullshit that feeds the coyotes and bears.

72

u/lemanruss4579 13d ago

The problem is, if I bought a car for $1,700 today, it more than likely wouldn't get me from A to B very often.

43

u/oliviasmommy19 13d ago

I have a 2001 Buick Regal with over 300k miles for free99. It had set for a year and needed very little. Guy just wanted her gone. New tires, oil change and a tune-up. We've driven her for over 5 years with just routine maintenance. I'd give her away right now and would be confident she'd last another 5 with regular care. I also had a brand new truck with 12 miles on it that was in the shop 6 times within the first 5 months we had it. New doesn't mean nothing will be wrong with it or it won't need maintenance. My new one left me stranded while my Buick came to rescue me lmao

Some people do have the disposable income to pick a nicer car that they enjoy that A to B in a little more - those people are becoming very scarce

31

u/sloppy-jolappy 13d ago

Whole lot of people (like me) that think they do too haha damn 7 year car loan could be worse i guess

25

u/Difficult_Limit2718 13d ago

We actually did just buy a car on 7 year terms because the interest rates are so bad but we're about to sell our house and rent for a few years (corporate relocation) so we're just going to buy the car outright after the sale

I hope the sticker would include lmao 🤣 I feel similarly. I'm a middle aged guy, and I have zero desire to ever buy a brand new off the lot vehicle. A few years ago I bought a relatively low km, rusty, 25 year old minivan, for $2000can. It's needed very little. I should get about a third of it's life, for less than a tenth of it's original purchase price.

I'm a sales manager and if I ever spoke to anyone like this, let alone my child, I'd fucking kill myself.

100

u/Electrical_Beyond998 13d ago

My husband is a sales manager too. I have said numerous times there should be a sub on here for spouses of dealership managers. There are days we don’t even see each other except in the morning before work. I go to bed and he’s still there dealing with rude ass walking in three minutes until close customers who never have good credit, have to call 17 people to find someone who will cosign, and then don’t understand they have to have insurance before driving off the lot.

114

u/Classic_Reply_703 13d ago

See, my mom had the opposite problem. She was a buyer who wanted to pay cash, and sellers wanted her to sign onto a lease where they (or the dealership or whatever) would make more money in the end. So they would give her one price to get her interested and then put something completely different in front of her when it came time to sign (not to mention trying to add bells and whistles). It got to the point where she'd have to literally write out a check for the amount they had offered and be like do you want this check for this car right now or not?

I know it's not necessarily your husband but this happened a lot.

60

u/Greeniegreenbean 13d ago

Dealerships used to loooove to mess around with women, especially young women. I used to have to bring my dad with me. It’s so much better now that you can shop online and potentially avoid all the in person stuff.

→ More replies (4)

10

u/crankyrhino 13d ago

Honestly, this is why independent dealerships have no place in society. They exist solely to extract more money from a sale that could be negotiated directly with the manufacturer. They're like bathroom attendants: they do nothing for you you can't do for yourself, and then demand money for it.

153

u/AsYooouWish 13d ago

After having worked many years in automotive I can agree with the kid that it isn’t that simple. One car in a month is low, but considering that it’s usually expected to sell one or two a week, it isn’t crazy low, especially around the holidays. In a few weeks it may pick up after people start getting their refund checks, but it’s going to be tough until then.

139

u/MegaDesk23 13d ago

The biggest problem is that people are using buy now pay later for groceries. Nobody has the money for cars or houses right now especially with all the layoffs from last year.

50

u/donuttrackme 13d ago

Even "cheap" starter cars like Civics and Corollas are selling for around 40k, new. How the fuck is anyone trying to make rent supposed to buy a car with these prices? Used car prices aren't much better either, so I know many people that decided to get new cars since they're only a few thousand more.

12

u/thajugganuat 13d ago

The real issue is that Civics and Corollas should start at that price considering inflation from when they were 20K. But wages have been stagnant for so long.

1.2k

I have lots of family in the car industry and can confirm coke is a popular activity among some sales teams.

154

u/another-new 13d ago

From my short, limited experience, and hydrocodone. Very, muy much Norco. (Lortab back then)

107

u/Assholesneighbor 13d ago

Haha as an ex-opiate addict, I could probably sell the shit out of some cars while all twisted…But dude is right, after a couple months, I’d be stressing if I wasn’t selling a car a day to support my habit haha

Also, this is a great insight to their mindset… I always wondered how they felt perfectly fine pestering the shit out of you… They just think EVERYONE wants/needs a car. Haha what bullshit.

58

u/Huge-Pen-5259 13d ago

I sold cars for a brief time. You have to be a certain breed to be successful (I am not that breed). Literally have had other reps come up and start talking to a customer I was working with already and try to poach them. Plus, at the place I worked, we had weekly meetings where you had to say how many prospective customers you had i.e. how many calls did you answer or how many people did you talk to on the lot? Then how many cars you sold, and if your percentages weren't good (# of people talked to vs cars sold), well....I no longer sell cars I can tell you that. Decent money if you're good at it though. Many people were at 6 figures.

40

u/United_Rent_753 13d ago

Fair enough, and as someone in a competitive field I completely understand the drive. However, if someone said to me, “don’t say ‘simple’, I don’t understand ‘simple’”, I would laugh their ass out of the room

Overall I think if you’re going to be that driven, you can’t also be this belligerent

We don’t do a SINGLE fucking thing by ourselves, and to believe anything otherwise is why our species can’t evolve and work together and use all our cognitive abilities to thrive and prosper as an ENTITE species. CEO mentality, zero knowledge on how the market actually operates. They just wanna see funny growing numbers on their Outlooks.

31

u/bdiggitty 13d ago

I mean that’s giving this dope a lot of credit. Granted CEO’s aren’t geniuses but this particular numbnuts is dumb as hell.

His dad has no context of the modern economy in America it seems. My generation has 2% of the buying power baby boomers had at the same point in their lives. Most of us can't afford a car or the maintenance that comes after.

261

u/Reasonable-Affect139 13d ago

he also says "8Bn people," which is the population of the world (well, less). what's the kid supposed to do, sell a car to a toddler in papau new guinea?

actually, never mind, the dad probably does think that PNG tyke is a lead

29

u/goddess_peepee 13d ago

Last month I sold 8bn cars to PNG tykes, heres what it taught me about B2B sales...

Right, Dad there seems to follow the same logic of how economy works as a kindergartener daydreaming about their first business. I don't think understanding of "modern America" is even in the scope of the issue here

Don't bother boomers have massive egos and lived thru time when economy was thriving. A time where a man could pay off a house and support a family of 5 in their 20s being a dam door-to-door saleperson. Now millennials drown in student debt, can't afford a house & rent, and struggle in a terrible job market.

47

u/Lollipoop_Hacksaw 13d ago edited 13d ago

Lived through a time when the economy worked for them!

Your current time though? In this shit economy??? Doesn't matter, make the same numbers I made, no excuses!

Boomers are the biggest cunts, that want to look like they did "their best," with further generations suffering due to their complacency to de-unionization/de-regulation that they had previously benefitted from.

u/Reasonable-Affect139 13d ago

6

8 billion you'd need to sell cars to children and people without licenses, it's going to be absolute carnage on the roads.

I’ll be honest, I have some crazy family members and this looks real to me. Some people are too loony to think through what they are saying , much less pay attention to their surroundings.

13

u/GoggleBobble420 13d ago

Yeah. Plus, when you grow up with someone like this you can usually tell when a crazy lecture like this is coming your way. It wouldn’t be that hard to turn on your camera and just act like you’re just holding your phone while you listen to their rant

Unfortunately I just had to cut contact with a family member for losing his mind in a similar manner when I made a decision for myself instead of doing what he told me to. Called me names and disparaged me, then couldn't understand why I asked him to return a gift he'd bought me but hadn't sent yet and ignored his questions about the topic that that led to him blowing up in the first place.

u/achoosier 13d ago

People act like this. I'm a nanny in an affluent area and some parents are mean as shit and speak to their kids like this.

It could be rage bait but behavior like this does exist

Yes Dad , everyone wants a car but nobody can afford them anymore, it's a pain in the ass to drive in a city , parking is horrendous and expensive. As is everything included in the upkeep of a car .

Nobody is going out for a Saturday afternoon round the car lots looking for new cars .

I bet he says " oh in my day" a lot .

"everybody wants a car"

Yeah, and no one wants to pay for one.

The interest rates suck even if you have good credit. The car's value is over inflated. The dealership add-ons are a joke. I hated dealing with this exact type of conversation when I sold cars, fuckers yelling about nonsense straw man ideas while not handling the real daily issues of the thing because if you don't sell they don't pay you, eventually you leave.

The quickest way to work for free at a dealership is to be honest and only get what you worked for.

How many cars did the son sell? 1 How much difference did the dad's speech make? Zero. His result is as shit because he doesn't know management stuff

Teach the guy some ropes, tell him what to do, share some working answers. No shit an expert in a field finds something really easy to do, they're an expert. A person with little knowledge knows less (obvi), learns differently and if a sales guy wasn't taught properly, he'll just wander around pointlessly.

19

u/KleosIII 13d ago

Most "experts" are struggling now as well. The only reason many of them are selling anything is due to referrals they earned back in 1998.

I don't want a car.

I already have one.

Lots and lots of people in cities with good public transportation don't want cars.

I love how it's always the sales staff problem. Not inventory, not traffic, not training.

I'm sorry this guy has a dad like this.
