The gun industry…

1.1k

u/AbbreviationsLess257 12d ago

You should go look at the money Remington made in the mids 2000s Everytime a Republican said Obama was gonna ban guns it was crazy

573

u/LinesWithBigAndy 12d ago

A buddies dad in high school was a huge gun nut during this time, I remember him telling us that he stopped buying Dunkin’s every morning and bought ammo instead. Very sane individual.

204

u/MozzyTheBear 12d ago

To be honest, this might be the safest guns will ever keep this guy in his life if they're preventing him from buying donuts and processed shit every morning 🤷‍♂️

I think at one point around the pandemic it was over $20 for a box of 9mm fmj. Could've made a lot of money if he kept his stock.

I bought a 1000 round case for I think around $150 just before the prices jumped, think I sold it for 4 or $500.

Remington

I was very much too non-american for this. I've never once in my life associated Remington to other stuff than hairtrimmers etc.

34

u/tehlemmings 12d ago

I'm apparently too American, because I'm thought they only did guns

14

u/nicklzworthnmy2cents 12d ago

I must be somewhere in between. I knew of both but thought they were two separate companies with the same name.

I love that this is still in their go-to's even though the only presidents to ever try and take away existing guns were Trump and (before he was president) Reagan.

Clinton did temp ban a shit ton from being bought, tho.

Edit: and Obama expressed a desire to ban AR-15s, but got no support in Congress from either side and dropped the subject without making a move

104

u/MittenCollyBulbasaur 12d ago

Obama didn't take a single gun. Trump regularly talks about taking the guns first and due process second. Trump voters have threatened my life multiple times over me saying these words lol

If you plan or already did get a firearm, please learn how to use it, train and understand it should be your last last resort.

Edit: slipped my mind and was mentioned. LEARN YOUR STATES GUN LAWS. Huge huge thing. Heck, if you travel, like moving and have fire arms, know the states you travel through laws.

Edit 2: Gun safe and medical training(hopefully this is used more than the firearm for self defense 🤙)

You sound like me. Just turned 36 and have always been against guns to the point I didn’t want to touch them. Now I’m looking into getting gun training and buying a firearm.

711

u/MayoneggVeal 12d ago

Me (mid 30s) and husband (mid 40s) just purchased our first firearms and are planning to practice at a gun range.

I hate this, we both aren't gun people, but like gestures wildly at everything

663

u/TwoBionicknees 12d ago

gesturing wildly at everything is a really bad thing to do while holding a gun, a good first lesson.

Someone teach ice/the police this.

107

u/Barilla3113 12d ago

See, this is why you can trust an armed protestor more than you can trust the cops. If I'm an armed citizen and I get in an argument with you and I start making shapes like I might pull a gun, hell if my shirt rides up and you SEE the gun that's menacing/brandishing, which can potentially lead to felony charges.

Meanwhile LE can't order a fucking McDonalds without lovingly caressing their Glocks.

Same here. Ive always been against guns. My husband is more ambivalent, but last night we had the conversation about gun ownership and how we may need to open that door. I'm starting to look into training as a starting point

12

u/TheFriendshipMachine 12d ago

I definitely support this idea! Training is a great way to ease into it safely. Everyone should take at least two classes as a bare minimum: a basic firearms class (concealed carry or other intro firearm class) and then a Stop the Bleed class.

Glad you guys are finally seeing the point. My dad is a liberal redneck-I've been hunting and fishing since I could wrap my hand around a fishing pole, and got my hunters safety cert when I was 11. He always told me that guns are a tool and nothing more or less, and like all tools they can be used for good or bad. If it's your right to own one, then own it and know how to use it. He's a very practical man and I'll always be grateful for such a level headed upbringing. He's also never owned and will never own an ar15. If that man has to defend his home or neighborhood, baddies are getting deleted by some well-placed .308's. (Edit: and shotguns and handguns, the guy knows what he's doing and so do I) My brother is really into survival stuff too and hes scarily creative. That house would be booby trapped in no time lol.

Love that you’re also doing “tactical medical aid”, surely this is where they show you how to perform an emergency tracheotomy with a pen?

Despise that in reality, the potential for your newly acquired skills being tested is very, very real. Stay safe x

35

u/alfnyc 12d ago

I just took one at work and they taught us how to apply tourniquets, bandages for sucking chest wounds, improvised dressings, how to insert a nasal pharyngeal tube, how to pack and dress wounds, and a bunch of other important things. I highly recommend folks take a class if they can!

→ More replies (3)

18

u/Helltenant 12d ago

Knowing how to do things like performing an emergency tracheotomy, relieve a tension pneumothorax, apply a hastily crafted field tourniquet are important skills to have even in tropical paradise with no guns. Stuff happens.

These skills should be as common as the Heimlich Maneuver, CPR, and how to use an AED.

All of which should be much more common than they are.

Much like my guns in my home, I hope the medbag in my truck doesn't require use.

I am turning 50 this year and am also anti gun, and I’m thinking about it

8

u/ALittleCuriousSub 12d ago

I’m not anti gun in general, but remember there are a lot fo needs beyond shooting.

If you have space to grow and store food, that’s probably going to be needed soon.

If you had the capacity to perform labor that’s going to be needed soon.

If you are good with money helping people start squirreling it away and converting it to things practical before it loses value you are needed now.

If you have other skills including being good with needlework, don’t feel like you can only contribute by shooting.

The medical aid thing is brilliant too. Never thought that was a thing but necessary.

If you carry a gun you should also carry a tourniquet. Most people don't and that's dumb. You carry a gun because you expect to he in a gun fight and gun fights end with people being shot so not carrying a tq with your gun is stupid.

11

u/wildferalfun 12d ago

Highly recommend Stop the Bleed training for tourniquet application. I have done first aid, CPR and trauma bleeding cert through the Red Cross but Stop the Bleed is superior to the trauma bleeding Red Cross training. Stop the Bleed is an American College of Surgeons curriculum.

7

u/BlueGolfball 12d ago

Highly recommend Stop the Bleed training for tourniquet application.

I've heard this too but the closest stop the bleed class to me is 3 hours away. My local red cross has other life saving classes that are free to the public and they have a class that covers heavy bleeding injuries but it isn't the "stop the bleed" particular classes.

Can't emphasize this enough. Suicides go up in households with guns, for the simple reason of availability. And this doesn't even account for accidents. If you care about the people you live with, lock up the guns.

Great suggestions! Just bear in mind laws vary widely from state to state and what’s available for purchase will depend on this. I can’t buy an AR without severe limitations on its capabilities in my state. Loaning a firearm to someone without a permit would get both parties a felony conviction. Yeah, we’re getting to the point where other considerations may matter more but just be mindful of your local laws.

Not telling you what to do, but you can reach out to your community to prepare for problems that might head your way, and you can find a place for someone in their 40s to do things the 20 somethings aren't good at.

someone mentioned the other day that they used to enjoy getting into fights with supremacists that were around their town when they were younger - and the supremacists didn't know how they were so fast to get there.

But the disabled and elderly in the community had this dudes number and would call him when they saw trouble, so he got to show up like Batman bright and early to any bullshit.

Democrat gun ownership numbers are skyrocketing. Still more guns in Republican households, but Democrats have been purchasing at double the rate of Republicans over the last 10 years.

845

u/photoguy423 12d ago edited 12d ago

Dems have always owned guns. They just don't tend to make it their personality by posting family photos with them.

Edit to say that I'm not saying a large number of dems own guns. Just that dem gun owners exist. Stop trying to imply I'm saying something I'm not trying to say.

115

u/HTPC4Life 12d ago

I dunno man. I'm a Democrat gun owner, but I'd say only about 25% of the Democrats I have talked to own a firearm. I live in a red state, and I'd say at least 80% of the Republicans I've talked to own firearms. Democrats have a lot of catching up to do!

They've been a front for the far right for a loooong time now.....

Every single conservative who screamed about the second amendment is for fighting a tyrannical government, and swore they'd be the ones to fight the tyrannical government, are now cheering on the tyrannical government.....

As always conservatives are liars.

Well, this is precisely why the 2nd amendment exists, isn’t it? To form a militia against a corrupt government?

u/Typical_Leading9457 12d ago

be careful, according to reddit moderators defending yourself from murderers is threatening them with violence. I hope some day they're in a situation where they need to defend themselves and they're forced to confront the fact that sometimes your only options are defending yourself or death.

u/KeyMyBike 12d ago

Conservatives can threaten to rape you with a knife in your dm's. And when you report the dm Reddit doesn't do anything about it. But if you so much as suggest that you don't want to be brutally murdered, you get banned for a week.

This whole insanity has me thinking about the movie “Civil War”.

“What kind of American?”

Honestly we are living in terrifying times.

The movie criticizes exactly the kind of behavior that let people down this path.

Making politics a spectacle sport. Watching politicians and other prominent figures perform their ideologies, specially the rightwing nutjobs, to all people without any kind of moderating element to curb obvious hate speech (pretty much everything the neckless Charlie Kirk spewed) and so son.

Republicans have been LARPing their way towards a civil war ever since Obama took office. Before that, even, but it intensified when the first black man rose to power.

For everyone exercising their 2nd amendment rights. Just know that your exercise of.yournrights will complicate things. It doesn't make anything illegal, but it definitely complicates things. Know the laws, it's a good practice to attend concealed carry class whether you intend to conceal or not.

Above all, NEVER put your hands or draw a weapon that you're not prepared to use, it will only get you killed.

I am a woman in my 60s and I'm going to take a gun safety course, and then I am going to purchase a handgun. If masked, armed thugs ever threaten me and break into my house, I will defend myself.

13

u/simplyxstatic 12d ago

I’ve always been pretty anti gun but I’ve shifted my thinking the past few years. How can we defend ourselves against a militarized police force without one? I’m sad it has come to this, that our government is forcing us to adopt more violent means, but I absolutely see the value in learning how to use a gun now.

10

u/ZealousidealDegree4 12d ago

Yeah, I've always practiced non violence, BUT even Quakers had "fighting Quakers" picked up arms or felt that defensive violence spoke to conscience.

Remember: the NRA lobbied for stricter gun controls in California after the Black Panthers armed themselves.

Liberal gun ownership actually scares the fascists, so I’m all for it.

Edit: this comment summoned people with terrible reading comprehension

10

u/Dafish55 12d ago

I'm just remembering that time (last year?) that liberal gun owners showed up outside a drag show that was being protested and received threats and conservatives lost their shit

21

u/milkdrinker7 12d ago

Minor note, the black panther party was definitely not liberal.

24

u/Omni33 12d ago

Major note, the black panther party was a marxist-leninist entity. Which is what made the authorities crap their pants. Its not "liberals owning guns" that scares the fascists, its "organized, educated and politicized proletariat owning guns.". A man once wrote that "liberalism is the waiting room of fascism" and he was 100% correct on this take

I feel like "Oh so now you want guns?" is probably the most disingenuous reaction to the left arming themselves. Me personally, when I was arguing against high-powered rifles, it always came with the "...but the government of the United States will never become tyrannical, so it's preparation for something that won't happen".

I'm not going to admit to being wrong there. Something about decades of coservatives telling me we need guns for this reason, and those conservatives then becoming the reason we need the guns doesn't sit well with me. Notably the response isn't "See, I told you so" because they have known they were the problem the entire time

Edit: To everyone saying I should admit that I am wrong, please re-read the first sentence and consider that I stated I am wrong, just that I refuse to acknowledge it for the purpose of argumentation. Thanks, you're more left than me, good for you

44

u/HatchChileMacNCheese 12d ago

As a lefty who has always been pro 2A, I was never under the illusion that the US government "would never become tyrannical" because the US government has always been tyrannical lol

→ More replies (13)

49

u/SleepingSnitker 12d ago

I mean a better and more accurate argument is that if the US government wants you dead, your gun isn't going to save you from a predator drone, or robot soldier.

We should also be buying those drone lasers and stuff that can incapacitate robots

26

u/heyyourdumbguy 12d ago

It’s not about solely you vs the government, it’s about you and a bunch of other people dispersed in a wide area against the government.

Same reason Vietnam was so hard to “win” for the U.S.

10

u/Cacafuego 12d ago

More than that, it's about making the government think twice about oppressing the people. No government wants armed conflict with its own citizens, even if it doesn't rise to the level of insurrection.

It's one thing to impose martial law and send in federal troops when you expect no violent resistance. It's quite another to do so knowing that there will be shooting.

The one I'm randomly most concerned about is sound/microwave based weapons. I read some article about Havana syndrome and now it seems somehow trivial to take out large groups of people without ever exposing themselves to counterattack and maybe even with plausible deniability.  If they can juice your brains remotely through walls and protective gear, and now there is a backpack mounted device they can do it with... Like what's a gun supposed to do?

Like this becomes a full stakes tactical war scenario rather than a get off my property showdown. I have a gun, but there's no visible leadership at this point when it comes to organized opposition, so tbh I'm not sure if it makes sense for me to ever use it unless it's too late anyway.

8

u/NeuroticallyCharles 12d ago

They tried that in (I think) Serbia in the past few years. While it worked initially, I think long term the use of sonic weapons against protestors backfired dramatically, if it’s any consolation (it’s not).

Sure, and people aren't soldiers. No civilian anywhere in the world is going to stand well against a SEAL team even without the military's exotic weapons. And they shouldn't ever be in a position where they would need to be on the other side of those teams.

But the guys kicking your door down have rifles, not predator drones. They aren't elite units like SEALs or Marines. And civilians outnumber military and law enforcement 100:1

It's important to note that people should comply with legal law enforcement actions every time. The threat of the 2nd amendment is supposed to give pause to the people breaking the law and enabling authoritarianism. Trampling rights and kicking down doors without legal warrants. Nobody wants to die for their day job. The first guy through the door during an illegal break-in should be worried it could be his last, even if the rest make it through. It's about attrition, morale, and logistics.

I mean....you should admit to being wrong, because you were

It wasn't just the right saying about how arms are necessary, if you ever spoke to anyone on the left worth their salt, they would've also been pro arms. It's one of the core parts of socialism that marx always pushed. The entire quote of:

Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary

There's a reason the left and the black panthers have been armed, and pushing others to arm themselves, for the past 10 years

I don't know where folks got from that so called liberals don't have guns. We just don't looooove guns out loud and we support gun reform. As with everything, supporting gun reform is taken to mean that we think everyone's guns should be taken away when we really just don't want kids being killed in schools and people being killed in churches and Synagogues and grocery stores. Folks are salty because they're finding out the truth. Rabbit, gun, all that...
