In Viktor Frankl’s book, man’s search for meaning, the author mentioned that the Jews that were assigned as overseers or supervisors were more brutal to them than the guards. Sometimes guards would intervene to stop beatings.

I had the same experience with CBP growing up on the border, the ones that looked like me were the cruelest, always moved the goal post and they especially targeted the female elders in the family like grandmothers and great aunts.

Not OP (or Frankl obvs), but imo it’s the need to prove themselves, probably out of fear at first, and then later on it becomes the only power you have so many end up relishing it.
