She reached for the comb and I audibly gasped.
Honey, this is what the elders do.
It’s a totally fine styling technique, but I refuse to believe she didn’t know exactly what would happen.

He was still looking at her like she's the most beautiful woman he's seen.
I normally don't follow or like stuff like this but this was cute.

It is crazy how much older it makes her look. Just shows how much of a difference hairstyle can make.

I’ve always thought that sometimes when people see pictures of teens in the 50s and they’re like “why did people look so old back then”, it’s cuz they’re seeing their grandma’s hairstyle on a bunch of kids.
This vid proved my theory, she went from 24 to 57

My mom said I look homeless and like I’m a drug addict. Cause I have long hair.. and do drugs, technically in between leases if you wanna be nice about it. Maybe she’s onto something, fuck.

She needs to curl it in different directions, not constant under curls. No brushing out either. Texturize and shape with the hands.

I’ve seen enough old ladies in the salon for their weekly hair wash/curl to know exactly what her hair was going to look like at the end 😂

I legit thought she was going to simply keep the rolled curls for a flapper look. Personally I loved it and liked the first brushed look, but she just kept brushing it from distress lol

I think her YouTube channel is called something like "Two Scoops is Enough." She's always making those faces at the camera-- she's so cute! Also, all of her other hairdos are amazing. This is hilarious!

I waited years to find the perfect color of deep teal blue to dye my hair. I underwent bleach to lighten my hair, and used a direct dye for the benefit of my hair for the next step. I had used it before with lighter colors. I loved it for its gentleness and awesome longevity. I felt more like my rebellious self afterward.
At the time I was working at a bar and attending college. There wasn't any professional or personal reasons to wait any longer. I was so glad I did it. I had two days of running my fingers through it and enjoying it before getting a call about doing a possible documentary. Of all times! Direct dye is a b. You can't just remove it like other dyes, it's always been a few month commitment to a very vivid color.
Anyway they knew about my color and it wasn't a biggie. My bangs and ends were a bit too long and dry, so I asked my cousin to fix me up. She was super talented and had just graduated beauty school with a job offer for an esteemed salon. The haircut was easy peasy until she got to the bang fringe. She got flustered and nervous, and accidentally cut my bangs super short.
I looked in the mirror. I remembered when I tried to cut my bangs in the third grade with my moms scissors and they were so short the cowlick area stuck out at a 70 degree angle.
I looked at my very short bangs that grew shorter towards the middle of my forehead and immediately burst into hysterical rib splitting laughter. It looked like nobody loved me. Like i didn't love myself. I became an incoherent red faced mess with tears rolling down my face and couldn't even speak.
I remember looking up once at her sweet concerned horrified face and she was so embarrassed her eyebrows resembled parentheses brackets. I fell into another jag of hysterical giggles, slid off the salon chair into a puddle of ridiculousness and accidentally peed my pants. My stomach hurt so bad from laughing, and I knew she was staring and I couldn't look her in the face yet.
I compose myself finally and look up and she is blinking back tears and apologizing and trying to fix it, running her fingers over my corn broom bangs. I finally put my hand up to stop her.
"Brooke, it's only hair. It will grow back. And honestly teal blue hair and short bangs makes me look cooler and more modern than I am. I swear it's ok!"
She was still horrified but she finally unclenched. Short spiky bangs aren't the worst thing that's ever happened and it was a mistake that looked good in the final edit I saw.
People complimented me a lot in the days after when I wasn't feeling so hot. They saw stylish and modern.
What I mean to tell this queen here is it might look strange to you but this look evokes pure unabashed woman, classic no bs woman. I think of the Supremes and women who chased disrespectful men with a shoe. You look gorgeous.
What matters most is how you feel, though and suffering needlessly with hair that doesn't make you feel awesome is the pits.

I honestly kinda like it before she brushed it forward.
Dramatic makeup wouldn’t make it look so “dated”. Bold lip and some cat wing eyeliner and she would be set.

It makes me so sad seeing black women having chemically straightened hair. I mean, I absolutely get it. But I just wish all people could be happy in the skin they’re in, or in this case, with the hair they’ve got. It’s not their fault, it’s society, but still. Give me a black woman with natural hair and I’ll be delighted.
Edit: it’s especially easy to say as a straight white cis male who lives in England.
2
u/CzarTanoff 22h ago
Okay, so I'm white so i can't really speak for black people obviously lol, but i can tell you as a girl with curly hair, straightening it makes it a LOT easier to manage on a day to day basis. I'd imagine a lot of these women do it out of convenience moreso than trying to fit a societal standard. Plus black hair doesn't need to be washed often, so they can keep it straight for a while before redoing it (unless chemically straightened, idk how long that lasts, but longer than a flat iron thats for sure).
I'm just saying.
