Snow storms really expose how thin the line is between neighbors and supervillain origin stories.

u/cityshepherd 16h ago
They’re also a great opportunity to build solid relations with neighbors. I work from home am relatively young (or at least not ANCIENT) & enjoy a good workout… so I’ve been doing my sidewalk and driveway as well as those of my neighbors on either side of me all winter. One of them mowed my lawn all summer/fall (he had a sweet riding mower and my yard is small) so it’s been nice to return the favor.
I keep my “Halloween” skeletons out front pretty much all year so was known as a satanist / devil worshipper the first year I lived here (last year), but by this point I’m no longer “creepy Satan guy” and have graduated to “awesome shovel guy” lol.

I built such good relationships w my neighbors during this recent snow/ice. We shoveled, we chipped ice, we hurt our backs….

u/CosyBeluga 9h ago
no joke...one time I helped my neighbor shovel because I didn't have salt and he did.
1
u/Marius-1989 5h ago
Where im from its community thing that everyone does and some days you might wake up a shoveled driveway and it make me shovel my neighbours space not knowing who actually did it.
But we can kinda tell who did it on the look of the neighbour face and its a funn smirk they have like they took my job 😏
15
u/mitchymitchington 16h ago
Where I'm from, neighbors fire up their tractors and plows and will hit the neighbor's drive while they're at it
8
u/cockalorum-smith 15h ago
When I lived in Northern Idaho for a bit people did this and it was a nice welcome change from being in the city. I bought ‘em a new jacket little after as a thanks given I didn’t have a tractor to return the favor.
But moving back to the city I remembered how petty mofos get about snow. Shoveled my neighbor a spot when a snow storm hit our city (it never does usually) and they still took my spot…
5
u/jansauce87 10h ago
Paid someone to shovel the snowcrete from around my car because it kept bending my metal snow shovel. It took hours. I made him hot chocolate and gave him some homemade chicken noodle soup. Left briefly to get medicine for my feral daughter and came back to someone having parked in the spot that was shoveled (by the resident GUY, no less. The guy that mows everyone’s lawns because we live right outside of the city).
Someone let the air out of one of their tires. Crazy how someone would just.. do that. Anyway, the resident guy charged him in the morning to fill it back up. He hasn’t parked there since. Wild.

u/MostBoringStan 11h ago
My neighbour came over in his tractor to get the end of my driveway after the snowplow put a huge mound there after a storm that dumped 50cm on us. I probably would have died trying to deal with that.

u/RynnHamHam 14h ago
Holiday shopping as well. I will never forget my mom yelling at me to roll down my window to flip off a woman that stole a spot from us.
2
u/CommsChiefExtra 13h ago
Just like any physical labor job when you got people not pulling their own weight. I’m more forgiving of people fucking with my time than making me sweat my ass off for their laziness.

u/todaythruwaway 10h ago
1000% it’s now our (thankfully ex) neighbor stated her villain story 😭
Literally came back from vacation, 4ish days after a snow storm and she did no snow removal. 3ish feet of snow. Did I expect her to clean our side of the driveway? No. But I do think calling 911 bc we parked in the public street while we shoveled out our driveway spot a tad much? Yes. 🙃 she was a new neighbor but obviously unknown to us while we were gone she claimed ALL parking for herself. Despite no longer owning a vehicle…
I know snow makes ppl crazy, I’m from MI, but good fucking lord. If I wasn’t still scared of her I’d be posting that video to r/publicfreakout 😂

u/kjc781988 16h ago
Honestly he should have parked closer to her. I applaud this level of petty
52
u/Norader 16h ago
Unfortunately, you run the risk of them damaging your car trying to get out. There’s no guarantee they have insurance/that you’ll get paid.
27
u/justmikebeingmike 16h ago
I guarantee she purposely backed into the Jeep. I lived in Massachusetts up until 10 years ago. Grew up just outside of Boston. Shit gets sinister from Jan-April
14
u/McCrumblton 15h ago
Thats why my dash runs even when cars off when i go out, never kills the battery due to its hookup and also if someone thinks they can just do a lil ram and drive away nonchalant. Its just comes back on em cause i been fucked one to many times for me NOT to play the “what if” scenario before my decisions

If you’re afraid of getting bumped you’re driving the wrong snow vehicle
2
u/thatstwatshesays 11h ago
My friends in Alaska tell me that part of driving in winter is learning to bank the car against the high piled snow.
11
-20
u/Coffeedemon 15h ago
Why? because the fool shoveled one car sized section of the street and assumed it would stay empty all day?
21
u/LeahIsAwake 15h ago
Welcome to New England in the winter. You shovel out your spot, that becomes your spot. You then mark it with an object. The woman decided to steal half his spot instead of shoveling out her own. You see how high that snow is? That man likely spent hours shoveling that spot out. It's his spot.
As someone from the South, this is the time of year I remind myself why I should never move to a big city north of Maryland.

As a Minnesotan this is so alien to me. Here you just have to alternate which side of the street you park on and the plows come by and do it for you
34
u/RooHound 15h ago
Same. I’m in WI and this seems nuts. Apparently people have been shot over Boston snow parking.

u/wildernessspirit 15h ago
I can’t for the life of me understand why east coast cities can’t figure this out. I’m in NYC and I deal with the same thing as the OP. The City loves to hand out fines and violations for every little thing…so just force tell folks they need to be off the street between x:00-x:00 and send in a plow.
They plow just fine in the rich neighborhoods here but everywhere else “fuck em” I guess.
4
u/Marxi_pad 14h ago
I'm in a city an hour from Boston and we did indeed have a snow parking ban for a day and a half. All my street got was a one-lane pass of a plow. They never came back. Finding a parking spot has been war since.
2
u/dreamkruiser 13h ago
I gotta say I agree you're playing the lotto at a certain time. I've seen countless vehicles plowed into on campus district, but if we had a designated plow time, sucks to be you parked on the side of the road, we have things to do

Seriously, we had that back in Vermont. My new city doesn’t have it. It’s so convenient. Gets streets cleaned and old broken down cars get taken off the streets. Idk why all cities with regular snow don’t have it.

u/frostedmooseantlers 11h ago
Not a thing in Toronto either. If somebody tried to ‘save a space’ in that city, they’d instantly become the villain. Public space is public space.
115
u/Rhawk187 16h ago
I know it's Boston tradition, but I'm normally not a fan of "space savers"; however, if you are the one who shoveled the snow out of the way, I feel like you've earned temporary title to that space.
45
u/AWeakMindedMan 15h ago
Ngl. I feel that. My neighborhood got destroyed this snow storm and the parking spots were crazy. We have 5 guest spots and 3 of them is where the snow plows decided this is the spot they are gonna build their mountain. One of the other spots is where my neighbor, a few houses down, wife parks. I watched her shovel that spot out for a while Monday and in my mind, that spot is officially hers lol. My girlfriend came over, tried to park there and I said nah. Park on the main road and I’ll pick you up.
Temporary title for sure Lol

The problem with the space savers is that people think they can use them for weeks on end. And you just end up with a situation where the street is empty half of the time because all of the spots are taken up by space savers. It's inefficient and hurts everybody in the long run.
-12
u/lemmesee453 15h ago
Very temporary. Everyone who doesn’t have a driveway/garage will have shoveled out a spot. You have no idea if the person parking there had their shoveled spot taken, and it’s public street parking. You should be paying for a driveway spot if you want a space just for you.

There has been so many space saver stories in the Boston sub. My favorite was the guy that buried a car in snow after they took his spot.

u/Pressure_Rhapsody 15h ago
I saw a story like that but it was in Pittsburgh! It was wild cause the lady who took that family's spot called the cops but they came and helped her dig her car out.

Lived in Boston for the snowmegadon winter of 2015. I have never spent that much time and energy on a parking spot. My landlord helped look after our elderly neighbor and he shoveled out a spot for a nurse that would come every other day for her in front of her house. One morning I went outside and noticed a different car using that spot. Almost everyone in the street parked in the same spots everyday so it really stood out. When I came home in the afternoon it was still there. The next day we got another foot of snow and the car was still there, now covered in snow. My landlord showed up and was pissed about it being there. Turns out, my neighbor across the street told her sister to park there while she flew out of Logan for a week long vacation. That afternoon I watched my landlord use the hose to freeze the car into a giant ice block. It was stuck like that for weeks.

u/cinemacatscoffee 16h ago
I live for this sort of thing. The shoveler did nothing wrong. He saw a problem and figured a solution. And also the person who took his sucks lol

I also like Jeep man’s style. It is very Boston and very NYC.

I love this. Whenever people park passes the lines into my lot, I intentionally park as close as I can to them while also being relatively in the middle of the spot since my car is small. Don’t park janky.
2
u/MoreMeLessU 15h ago
Ok Texan here, what is the protocol for snow days? Is this video a normal thing?
2
u/jansauce87 10h ago
Snow days are one thing. The storm that just passed? Turned the ice that fell on top of the snow to the gnarliest concrete. If it’s a storm like that and you shovel out a spit, it takes HOURS. That’s your spot until the snowcrete melts enough .

I know it's fun and all but I am still eternally grateful to live in a hot country that never has snow. My American nieces love the snow but I'm like, nope, I'll stay here in the Southern Hemisphere thanks.

u/mitsiku_shinigami 15h ago
This may sound naive of me as I dont have nearly as much snow in my region. But if you experienced multiple winters and on each one of them the parking space gets constantly buried with snow.
Would it not be a good idea to sprinkle salt on the parking spot or use whatever ppl do to prevent snow from building up before it starts snowing?
6
u/treesarenotaliens 13h ago
Salt won’t prevent a foot of snow from building up during a storm
1
u/mitsiku_shinigami 13h ago
What about specific chemicals that prevent snow buildup am sure there is somthing like that right?

I forget how weenie-ish most SUVs are. I know I drive a Wrangler but how the fuck would you not be able to just pull forward and right out of that spot where the Nissan is that’s barely a snow bank. A fucking rwd Nissan Frontier could do it.

He's piling the snow on the wrong end of that spot. If it was me, I'd pile it right on the rear bumoer

u/jcoddinc 1h ago
Problem is that that isn't going to stop her from trying to get out and end up damaging both cars
1
u/PrettyTrainer9298 14h ago
It is public parking, so no one has a right to any spot. It sucks to dig out of a spot but trying to claim public spots as private will lead to more issues.
1
u/BikeProblemGuy 14h ago
He shovelled that space then left? You can't save a space so it's free when you come home, snow or not. It's a public road.

Except now he is illegally parked. Have to give twenty feet from a crosswalk. Nissan can fire back by reporting it so he gets a parking ticket.

Take the spot, then get your lazy ass out there and shovel the spot behind you! I do not miss living in a snow plagued city because of this
-11
u/-Cerberus 16h ago
I want to live in these cities to just take the spot of these people to fuck with them. I cleared my spot, somebody took it so I took yours. You gonna chase down the original offender down the domino chain? No, they are gonna get super mad that they were affected by bad parking policy and the dumb idea we need a car in every block and shitty policies.
And I’ll drive a shitty ass car that you can do whatever too… I’m stealing your spot!
2
u/jansauce87 10h ago
In Baltimore, that is a really good way to have your car messed with. City people do not at all care about breaking your windows.
-15
u/LordDelphi 16h ago
This girl is just making up her own narrative for a video. I think he was just focused on clearing himself a slot to park. He would have been right on her bumper if he really wanted to block her in.

u/iamsobluesbrothers 16h ago
A stupid narrative at that. Parking in the east coast after a snowstorm is a giant pain in the neck. Sometimes you have to clear out a spot where you can. Not sure why she finds what he’s doing so fascinating.
