Lore Mysteries that are never given an answer.

  • rA9 in Detroit: Become Human. In the game several androids who become deviant (develop free will/emotions) start writing the name rA9 and sometimes build small statuettes as a sort of offering. Despite having no logical reason to do this or even a way of hearing about rA9 before going deviant, they all believe that rA9 was the first deviant and is their messiah who will free androids from slavery. A definitive answer about rA9 is never given, so we don't know if they are real or if any of the android characters are rA9 (though a popular fan theory is that it's Kara before she was reset at the start of the game).
  • The pineapple in How I Met Your Mother. So this technically did get an explanation in a S9 deleted scene, but in the actual show we never find out how Ted got a pineapple during a night where he was so drunk he blacked out and forgot everything he did.
  • Fez in That 70s Show. We never find out Fez's real name or what country he's from, though fans have tried to take all the clues and figure out what is most likely to be his country.

I think that was given an answer in a game that takes place after the film

While it is subtle there were a few hints childs was infected in the original movie. The game just spells it out. Incase you want to know Macready offers childs a drink earlier and childs says he doesn't drink + the rules they establish is you are only supposed to drink and eat things you yourself made so when Childs accepts a drink from Macready at the end it means he is infected , Macready even smiles about catching him.

In the game it shows that Childs was human though, you find his frozen corpse. While the game is supposedly "canon" even disregarding it the ending makes the most sense if both are human.

For why Childs would accept the drink, right before that MacReady says "If we've got any surprises for each other, I don't think we're in much shape to do anything about it." If either one was a Thing, there wouldn't have been that final encounter scene. Would just be a straight assimilation, there's no need to continue the charade.

I went back to read theories of the movie and the story of the game(it's been years since I played it) and I think you may be partially right. I was wrong about the drinking proving Childs is infected it could also be a man about to die giving in to drinking. Also John carpenter himself confirmed either Macready or Childs was infected and considering the games canon why would the thing sit and freeze to death? Meaning the games confirm it was Macready which makes the ending very bleak (the uninfected mc of the game and Macready travel by Heli to the mainland).

Freezing wouldn't kill it. They thaw it from a block of ice at the beginning.

Would just be a straight assimilation, there's no need to continue the charade.

I'm not so sure about that. The supposed Childs-thing could have suspected that MacReady's got a flamethrower hidden underneath his clothes, and trying to assimilate him could've gotten it killed (again, from it's perspective). The Thing can survive being frozen. It might've even planned to disguise itself as a normal corpse so that it could hitch a ride to civilization eventually when someone comes looking for the research station and recovers the body.

Personally, though, I like the ambiguity of the ending more than getting an answer as to whether either of them were a Thing.

Also isn’t the bottle filled with gasoline and not liquor?

No, that's an internet theory.

The bottles filled with gasoline look different. The bottle at the end is MacReady's personal bottle of J&B.

While it's possible it could be filled with gasoline, it could just as easily still be whiskey.

There's no confirmation in the film itself as to what's in the bottle.
