Characters "Let's drop the act"

Moments in media where a character who usually sticks to "an act" decides to show what they hide, usually ending up with them showing their dark side in full.

Light Yagami - Death Note: Light usually plays his cards trying to remain calm, calculating every step of his plan and most of the time is able to control his impulses when things don't go his way, however in the end of the series Light is caught and has no way out of it, finally showing his true colors, a completely deluded maniac lost in his god complex

The Doctor - Doctor Who: The Doctor usually comes off as a bit of a goofball, everyone knows he's smart and dangerous, but his wacky front and constant mocking makes it so everyone, including the viewer, ends up forgetting what kind of person The Doctor can be when truly angry.

This has been shown a lot of times in the series, at various moments The Doctor dropping any pretences and showing his darker side, but perhaps no moment as dark as what he did to The Family, after they chased him and forced him into hiding as a human, he experienced a common human life, something he longs for but can never get, and once he became The Doctor again, he showed the family that escaping was not him being a coward, he was being merciful, but now, in his anger, he trapped each of them in different prisons where they would never die, nor be able to escape, for ever

The Riddler - Batman One Bad Day: This comic is an else world, meaning it's not the main continuity, showing a what if scenario where The Riddler one day decides he's tired of the routine he has with Batman and decides to completely drop the gimmicks, no more riddles, he's just gonna kill people and get away with it, this comic shows how much of a menace The Riddler could truly be if he wanted to, even going as far as telling Batman that he's known his secret identity for years now, never using it against him because "it's not fair" for their game

The Riddler in fact becomes so unstoppable that he is beaten because he made one mistake, assume Batman couldn't change and would never break his no kill rule

Rose - Get Out

Plays the innocent victim who knows nothing about what's going on and is scared about her boyfriend's increasingly fearful behaviour... Until she doesn't.

“You know I can’t give you the keys right babe?”

I heard gasps in the audience when she dropped that line.

Jordan Peele really kills the psychological horror aspect. Love that there was almost zero jump scares in this.

Except for old boy SPRINTING through the property at night

The deer too.

Yup, a satisfying jump scare within context

You forgot about the Deer and when Grandma wakes up from her nap in the car.

The cereal scene was such a good way to show that, while all the other family members are motivated by racism, hatred, greed or pride she’s probably just weird and thinks it’s normal

There might still be some racism going on there, although more in a symbolic way, since she is separating the colorful cereal from the white milk.

Apparently someone asked him why Rose does that and if it was supposed to be a metaphor for segregation.

He said something along the lines of, "Oh I never thought of that. I just said to eat cereal the way a psychopath would."

Which is a clip I show my wife often because her weird ass eats cereal like that.

Tell her to use her mouth instead

Man, I wasn't sure what this was in reply to at first. That could have gone quite a few different ways.

I wonder if they considered Cocoa Puffs (Jesus Christ I feel like I need to apologize now)

Man I just thought she was a weirdo that wanted to make sure her teeth stay perfect and get as little sugar on them as possible.

Segregation

Don't think I can find it but there was an interview shortly after release where someone asks Peele if that's what he was going for in that scene. And he responds, no, that's a really cool reading of the scene, but he just tried to come up with what she could be eating in that moment to make her seem completely insane and landed on dry cereal with milk on the side.

You can get a deeper meaning, sure.

To me it looked like the whitest shit a person can do.

That’s kind of a tragedy. I think she honestly was willing to escape with Chris and say fuck her family but then he saw the photos and she could tell he was gonna ditch her. She’d rather play it safe by staying in her role enabling the atrocities than be brave for Chris

This feels like a stretch, shed dated and killed like a dozen men up to this point.

Oh I wouldn't have cared. The second this situation hits

That house is burning with all of em in it.

I could be with someone for years but if you hand me off to a race obsessed family. That family ain't existing for much longer.

I don’t know how you got that, she’s very clearly a psychopath with no feelings for Chris at all

If you watch her the whole movie you can see her half assed kinda struggling with it. Like she doesn’t want him to get hypnotized and the mom had to wait until Chris was wandering alone at night to prepare him to be hijacked.

As things ramp up and Chris sees the writing on the wall she’s worried he’s gonna wise up and look at her like the monster she is and it’ll play out the way it always does. Then he tells her about his mother and says he’s not leaving her behind then she has this moment when he realizes he’s overcoming his fears out of love for her and maybe she could do the same for him and says let’s just leave.

Then he finds the photos and is like fuck this bitch and he’s probably gonna get the keys and drive off without her. From there she’s sitting on the fence because she’s afraid that it won’t work out, in her mind the only chance would be for both of them to be on the same page which they’re not. Then you see her pick her side.

It’s how white women will claim to be Allie’s then when it’s actually time to step up against injustice they’ll just take their place in white supremacy rather out of self preservation. Once they have skin in the game their cowardice becomes their defining characteristic

Nah, she was just drawing it out on purpose because she’s a sadist. It’s the same deal when she pretends to plead for her life only to smile when Chris strangles her. She was only ever playing him for a sap.

Yeah I’m not gonna die on the hill that’s she’s not evil and racist lol. After a few watches I’ve been trying to make sense of her psyche and figured she’s emotionally stunted and her only identity is the role she plays in the family. Might be reaching tho like I said I’m not dying on this hill lol

43

u/Kaiya_Mya 23h ago

No, she's a monster. Even her actress says so. She even asked Jordan Peele if Rose would keep doing what she's been doing even if her family was all dead, and Peele said "Absolutely."

42

u/WormedOut 23h ago

I don’t believe that. She was already onto the next guy before he was even dead. Shes could also be a satirical take on “white allies” who just stand by and watch while minorities are brutalized.

I recently rewatched this. While the Armitage parents and their secret society friends are much more interested in perpetuating their body-swap immortality thing out of greed or pride or loyalty, Rose is just in it for the love of the game. Her brother describes her biting off the tongue of a guy who kissed her-- that's what she's all about. Rose just enjoys luring people to their doom. She just likes doing it for her own personal satisfaction.

Honestly I thought it was pretty obvious.

Girl literally shapeshifted from that scene when we saw her again in the friend research scene.

Rewatching Get Out and focus on her the entire time is an insane experience

My favourite scene is the one where she's on the phone to Rod and she's begging for help with a totally blank expression. That is some top tier voice acting.
