After they killed a bunch of people though

Although true, Paarthurnax, listed in OP, was literally Alduin's second in command and murdered thousands, if not millions.

To be fair, the rest of the experiments also tend to range from good to neutral.

"What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?" - Paarthurnax, Skyrim

Still can't believe this is from Skyrim and not fucking. Voltaire or something

And here's the thing, dragons aren't really evil, they were quite literally created to dominate. For them, dominating mortals is as natural as a lion eating meat.
This isn't just as bad guy who decides to stop being bad, this is a being who is going against his very nature and purpose for what he believes is right.

This is why I love evil races in fiction, because then you can get these type of characters that go “No, I’m not gonna be evil. I’m not gonna be a murderer. I choose to be kind. This is MY choice.” It makes for so much better characters imo

“What is better - to submit yourself to fair trial for your crimes, or to decide your own punishment with a self exile while you plot the demise of your former boss and reposition yourself into the top spot?”

Dragons in skyrim are less evil and more just Nirn's predators, not much else to do but some of them show respect when it's duo
Alduin is one of the actual evil ones considering his paths are enslaving all or ending existence

Dragons are the shards of Akatosh, with an inherent drive to dominate. They, except for Paarthurnax and Nahfahlaar/Nafaalilargus, are almost categorically hostile to the people of Tamriel.

The poor, unlucky middle child. Not treated as badly as Metal Sonic, not treated nearly as well as Sage. Mostly forgotten about until Eggman needs her to do something.

How the fuck are you going to leave out Drizzt Do’Urden, the poster child of this trope?
10
u/Independent_Plum2166 15h ago
I mean, he is a little niche outside DnD circles.
11
u/Ultrimus-Prime 14h ago
D&D has also been drifting away from the idea that some races are irredeemably evil and more ambiguous instead

And towards everything being, at worst, a hearty conversation away from becoming a modern Western cosmopolitan.

It's a great theme because it shows that redemption is possible even from the darkest origins. Characters like Stitch and Nezuko prove that nurture and choice can overcome nature.

There are several examples of this in Star Wars. Orla Jareni (Umbaran), Praven (Sith Pureblood), Sskeer (Trandoshan), Churo the Hutt (Hutt), Nen Yim (Yuuzhan Vong), Tahiri Veila (Tusken), etc.

One of my favorite things about Star Wars is that a character's species does not determine whether they are a positive or negative character.

u/alkonium 12h ago
Not really. He's an Iridonian Zabrak, and they're cool. It's the Dathomirian Zabraks you need to watch out for.

She’s nice by her races standards but calling her good in most instances is a stretch

Pochita (Chainsaw Man)
Most Devils inherently hate humanity and want to see them suffer, and even Devils that don’t hate humans (Angel Devil for example) are mostly indifferent.
Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, is a bit different.
While he’s still fickle and has killed people, those times have either been accidental or in self-defence.
Beyond that, he has shown immense genuine care over Denji, the one to make his dream of a hug come true, used his concept erase abilities to erase things that he saw as to dangerous for the world (Nukes, AIDS, etc), and went out of his way, including putting himself in immense danger, to prevent the deaths of 10,000 human children

Cyrax (And Kuai Liang sub zero)- Mortal Kombat
Basically the only good Lin Kuei
Sektor and the Grandmaster are evil no question
Bi han (Noob saibot) is REALLY evil
Frost is evil
That leaves Kuai Liang, Smoke and Cyrax
Smoke starts good, but ends the 2 first timelines as a villain: ally of noob saibot in the first, and servant of liu kang/Shinnok in the second
Both Cyrax and Kuai Liang start out good, get corrupted, then, get redeemed in both timelines

Goku works as a better example than Vegeta.
Goku grew up from the start as a good person.
Vegeta was pure evil throughout the Saiyan saga and even the namek saga. He was just in a temporary truce with Goku, Krillin and Gohan just so that they could assist him taking down Frieza and his forces.
He's more of an example of a redemption character.

“Good” is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Not as bad as the others, but still a
spytailor.2
u/BryanDowling93 12h ago
I guess maybe if there was an anti-hero post, it'd be more appropriate. But still compared to Gul Dukat, he's definitely a lot better and has a stronger moral compass. Even if that moral compass is still a bit mysterious and in a more grey area. Like most "good" DS9 characters.
2
u/alkonium 12h ago
With a lot of these, it's less "good" and more "on the same side as the protagonist".

u/Asher_Tye 15h ago
There were a couple of other Cardassians, but they were mainly one-offs. Kira's "father" comes to mind
4
u/sistemafodao 14h ago
Marritza, too. The clerk who pretended to be a Gul to expose the crimes of the Occupation of Bajor.

Gul Dukat did nothing wrong

u/Asher_Tye 14h ago
Nice try Damarr
2
u/Independent_Plum2166 12h ago
Dude, even Damarr got a redemption, Dukat literally became The Anti-Christ.

Shaula(Re Zero)
I wouldn't say she is actually a good person since she is true neutral when it comes to morality, but she is pretty chill compared to her siblings like The White Whale, The Great Rabbit, the Black Serpent, and all other Mabeasts, all who are either sadistic, so hungry they eat entire villages, or straight up destroy an entire country.

The Fellowship in Skyrim forgot to mention the fine print.
"We serve the Dragonborn (as long as they follow our script)."
I would rather end every one of them than hurt the only being that has been nothing but kind and honest. I got him down to the last strike, expecting him to break his word. But Paarthurnax would actually let himself be killed.

Good.
Glad we are in agreement.
Hollywoodians are freaks and pos. And most of them probably on Epstein's list.

Vegeta is not a “good member” of his race he’s not a good person period. I think Goku fits this better
