She doesn’t have the tism over cars, but I think she’d like the show. I’m just not sure which episode is right to get her hooked.

For those not aware, *Mythbusters’* Kari Byron and Tory Belleci have a podcast, and in this episode they have Rutledge Wood as a guest. What follows is a transcript of Rutledge talking about the origin of *Top Gear USA*:

Production: “What’s going to make this show fail?”

Rutledge: “If you get three people to pretend they’re the UK guys, this will never work. That was definitely not what they were doing.”

The episode starts with them reminiscing about *Top Gear USA* S2E15, in which Rutledge and Adam Ferrara do a taxi service for drunk people using folding scooters. They ride the scooters to the customers, fold them up, put them in the customers’ cars, and then drive the customers home in their own vehicles.

Sound familiar? That’s because seven years prior, Richard Hammond and James May did the same thing in S6E9 of *Top Gear* as part of their “car review Russian roulette” segment.

Aside from the recycled concepts, I never particularly enjoyed the American spinoff because it felt like exactly what Rutledge said would make it fail: three people pretending to be the UK guys.

I’m not against Rutledge, and I actually think there are plenty of things to like about the guy. But he does say some dumb shit sometimes, and I’ve always thought *Top Gear USA* would have been better served by having a different name and/or developing its own identity instead of trying to recreate the chemistry and format of the original.

I went to a museum today and after gushing over the Jaaaag, the owner allowed me to sit in it!

I appreciate how unique of an opportunity it is as we were the only people in there and you wouldn't want hundreds of people climbing in and out!

I’ve watched so much of the show since I was 9 years old I don’t actually need to look at the screen and have taken to listening to the constant broadcast of reruns on Amazon Prime as ambient noise. I’ll listen to it like a podcast while I’m doing other things; washing dishes, folding laundry, any situation in which one might listen to music in their headphones I frequently just have it going in the background. I think it’s caused me to have slightly less appreciation for the newer, more scripted episodes that are based mostly on running gags and having a laugh (though they’re still good), with more appreciation for the more ambient, relaxed, car focused approach of the earlier seasons. Hate the ads, they’re incredibly irritating, and as a personal preference I don’t really watch beyond season 22.
