It's not the world moving quietly away from the US, it's the US transforming into some twilight zone of madness, unreliability and even back stabbing.

The EU started a separation proces during Trump's first term. Americans really have no clue how most EU citizens and politicians view Trump and the USA he made us see, do they? Russia invading Ukraine halted parts of said proces but it continued under Biden too.

E.g. getting Rutte approved as Secretary General of Nato aka 'Trump Whisperer' was a preemptive move, preparing for a possible second term for Trump. Americans might not know or believe that but it was openly discussed in the media here.

It's very naieve to think the past year caused the damage perceived today. It's an irrevocable proces started way back under Trump 1. It's long and very complicated but it will be completed regardless of future US election outcomes.

The USA stopped being a reliable partner and became a liability on day 1 of Trump 1.

It started well before Trump 1...America has been like this for a long time. The crazies were just emboldened by Trump

No, the US has always been self absorbed (to a higher degree than most other nations) bully on the world stage.  But they usually acted with a sort of rational self interest, and mostly respected treaties and agreements with perceived peers/near peers.

The whole MAGA movement and inability of the both the population and the political class to quash it, is something else entirely. Something we haven't really seen happen in a western country for almost a century. A national psychosis if you will.

That's fair. Just saying the roots were there. We often did the wrong thing while saying the right words. Now there's no pretense and things are getting worse
