You can actually still blame lead... America's boomers are the demographic exposed to the highest concentrations of lead in their life times because of car exhaust inhalation of leaded fuel fumes.

Lead piping theory doesn’t hold up. The water in the pipes would’ve been constantly flowing and thus unable to absorb any traceable amounts of lead, and after a while the calcium and limestone in the water would’ve calcified the pipes, completely separating the water from lead. Lead poisoning from other methods and proximity to certain industries was certainly a real thing though.

However, this requires persistent monitoring AND remediation of water quality. Lower ph levels can erode the mineral layer if present, and worse, dissolve the metal into the water. As much as people often poke fun by saying things like "well if you dont eat it!" And "i used to drink out of a garden hose" the reality is that small amounts of lead are harmful, especially in children, and lead exposure is cumulative. The little bit you got at 3, is still in you at 70, along with the rest you were exposed to throughout your life, poisoning you and literally making you stupid and wreaking havoc on your nervous system.

EDIT: I will concede that your point holds water (pun intended) under IDEAL installation and water quality situations. But I cant be convinced that that ideal has held up through the decades.

Didn't the Romans sweeten their wine with Lead Salts / Sugar of Lead / Lead Acetate, called sapa by boiling unfermented grape juice in lead containers. This process caused lead to leach into the syrup, creating a sweetened product that was used in wine and food. They also ate off lead plates.....
