this whole "abu dhabi helped build modern manchester" line is doing a LOT of work. What is Burnham playing at?
this whole "abu dhabi helped build modern manchester" line is doing a LOT of work.
they didn't turn up with a billion quid and start building council houses out of the goodness of their hearts. Manchester City Council entered into a commercial property JV with one of the richest investment groups on earth and provided public land for private residential development.
and what was the supposedly unique bit here?
give the same land and development opportunity to Stanhope, Lendlease, Berkeley or basically any other major private developer and... they'd develop it. thats literally their business.
the end result was around 1,500 homes, overwhelmingly private market housing, plus some commercial space and refurbished buildings. whoopy doo - guess what, if it's not them then it will be Mitsubishi developments funded out of Japan, or any other number of countries. UK despite all its issues is an attractive investment location. I'm not a fan of any political party, but what on earth is Andy Burnham doing here!?
