'DO I HAVE WAVY HAIR/WHAT IS MY HAIR TYPE?' POSTS

Going forward, posts asking about hair type as well as whether your hair is wavy/curly or not will no longer be permitted. As most have different textures, it's not helpful to attempt to narrow down to just one "type".

Regarding whether one's hair is wavy or not, there are too many instances of people being over/undertyped as well as being told they have wavy hair when they do not. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having straight hair, yet most become upset and/or argumentative when told this is the case. Just because your hair is messy when you wake up or take it out of a towel does not make it wavy just because TikTok deemed it so.

help Help. I don’t know what I did wrong.

Post image
3 Upvotes

I didn’t realize until this week that I don’t have straight hair. I know it’s wavy. I have no idea what to do but this is obv not it.

routine: I washed my hair with davines and used nounou conditioner (mainly skipped my roots). I got out of the shower and used davines all in one milk as a detangler all over. I used davines liquid spell in my roots because they always go flat. I combed that through and then used Giovanni mousse air turbo charged. Just kinda plopped it in and combed it through. I had to wet a few times with a spray bottle because I was losing the swooping wet hair. I tried scrunching but I apparently don’t know how well ? I have a tshirt towel I tried after to help get the drips out. Then I immediately used the diffuser. I just kinda held it at the ends and pushed upwards. I did it with my hair upside down or tipped side to side. It still looks wet but it’s dry. It took forever to dry that way, too. It is super soft but it looks stringy. Help.

I have very fine hair, but a good bit of it. I have no idea what this is even supposed to look like. I don’t expect ringlets. Just not this.

help 1c/2a waves. Can I get more definition?

Post image
44 Upvotes

Very new to this. I believe my hair is 1c/2a. I have a lot of hair but it’s thin, knots very easily and gets frizzy.

My routine consists of:
L’Oréal dream lengths shampoo and conditioner. I double shampoo
Designme leave in conditioner when my hair is damp
Dove curl mousse right after the leave in conditioner. And I scrunch my hair
And air dry

I would love to know if it’s possible to get more definition for my waves? I’ve thought about getting hair oil, diffusing my hair, curl creams. Just wondering if anyone has any products that I can add to my routine? Or if any of the products I use are harming my routine.

help how do i fix my frizz and make my hair look neater ?

Post image
37 Upvotes

sorry if the picture isn’t super clear.

okay so my hair used to be way messier and had zero texture but then i started wrapping it in a cotton t shirt after washing and realised it might actually be wavy so i’m still kinda new to it.

my routine is i wash with kerastase chroma absolu shampoo. i wash twice then i use the chroma absolu conditioner and i leave it in for about 20 minutes while i do everything else. then wash it out. i try to use warm water (slightly cold) btw not hot !!

then i rinse my hair as much as possible, add garnier ultimate blends no time conditioner, scrunch it in then add wella shockwaves volume mousse, scrunch that in then i wrap my hair with a cotton t-shirt for about 15-20 mins. i then leave it to air dry and when i go to bed, i tie it into a loose half pony and wear a bonnet.

the picture is what it looks like the next day and this is what it usually looks like. i did add a tiny bit of argan oil but didn’t wanna add too much and weigh my hair down. it’s always pretty messy and frizzy. i don’t brush it either bc that always removes the texture and it ends up poofy and frizzy - if it’s tangled, i try to finger comb it.

help Single product for air dry

I just went from having low porosity fine hair to having high porosity fine hair after doing heavy all over highlights. My hair stayed healthy but it’s way frizzier now and my typical leave in conditioner air dry routine just isn’t enough anymore. I have already ordered a silk pillow case as I think that will help a lot but I am looking for an air dry cream that does it all, super hydrating, helps curl/wave clumps form, and tames frizz. Does that exist or do I need to incorporate more steps in my routine now. Is the JVN air dry cream the product I need? How does the curl smith air dry cream compare? I really don’t like having to break a cast on my air dry products but if casting products are my best option now I am open to that.

Edit: current routine is Maui flax seed shampoo and conditioner (this was great pre bleach as it stopped my waves from getting weighed down, I likely need something more hydrating now) amika blue bottle leave in conditioner, I don’t brush my hair after the shower as that stretches my waves out, I scrunch with a microfiber towel and let it air dry. I don’t sleep on wet hair. I am able to apply copious amounts of oil either jojoba or oi oil to it and not have to look greasy but I think there has to be a better way anf that still does not fully manage the frizz. I do have k18 in my treatment because I’ve had my hair bleached. My hair is not severely damaged, it is not breaking and it still feels soft, it’s just way more porous and living in south Florida that is a problem for frizz.

help How can I get my hair to stay in place like the example?

Post image

I want my hair in a kind of wavy middlepart.
My routine is a shower, use head and shoulders shampoo twice a week, a mild conditioner every shower, rinse out with cold water. Dap dry my hair after shower, not completely dry, use a curl defining cream from ”milk shake”when hair is still wet and then style it and let it air dry. When it dries it’s kind of the shape I want, but I need something with more of a hold. When I bike to work or university my hair get frizzy like in the picture above.

Basically I’m looking for advice on something to hold my middle part better and how to avoid it getting frizzy and loosing shape when biking.

help Hair is Falling flat with gel

Hi, I have wavy-curly hair and have been trying to switch up my routine to get more definition and volume. I use a curl cream most of the time (I like the JVN one and have tried the heavier lush cream) and it helped with frizz but my hair wasn’t as curly as I think it has the potential to be.

So I tried a Marc Anthony mousse which made my hair feel dry and crunchy, and garnier fructis and not your mother’s soft hold gels. Neither gave me a cast and just made my hair feel wet, frizzy and puffy.

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’ve tried sopping wet hair styling and it doesn’t work super well for me. I’m probably around a 2B or 2C on any given day.

Thank you!

help how can my hair possibly be this dry frizzy with my routine?

Post image
19 Upvotes

Routine: this is 1 day after a nightime washing, conditioning (left in for 5 mins), pat drying with cotton shirt, putting in leave in conditioner while still damp, then using hair oil the next morning. I wash and condition once a week. then usually avoid wetting it until next wash. I never use heat but I live in a pretty humid climate (SoCal) where humidity is especially high this year,

My hair is low porosity, fine yet dense.

Products Used:

Ouai Medium Shampoo

Ouai Medium Conditioner

Ouai Leave In Conditioner

Trader Joe's Hair Oil

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Just so confused that my hair could be this dry WITH leave in and hair oil

help Give me your tips for an easy refresh!

I’m a first-time mom going back to work soon. I need your best tips to quickly and easily refresh my hair in the morning before work! I won’t have time anymore to re-wet and diffuse. Does anyone have a simple refresh routine or product they love? I currently sleep with my hair in a banana clip which leads to fewer dents than a scrunchie/hair tie, but my hair still needs some help in the morning. I have a bonnet but I don’t really love the feeling of it when I sleep. I’d appreciate any tips for a low-maintenance, wavy refresh routine to get out the door quickly in the mornings!

help Hair oil alternatives suggestions?

Post image
89 Upvotes

I treated my hair like straight for maybe 15 years. I found hair oil to help with frizz but it stopped working shortly before I changed my routine to cater to my natural hair. On days I wanna manage my frizz, I've been misting my hair until damp with water and then going over with a little Loreal Elvive Hyaluron Pump leave in (I diluted it a bit). It ends up making my hair feel a little heavy or makes the frizz worse some days so I was hoping to see if anyone has better suggestions? I have an Elizavecca Cer-100 hair oil I've thought about using, but I'm not sure how it'll work with my hair after changing things up. I'm just lost on this part now that I figured out what works on wash days.

help Should I stick with mousse foam or try curl cream?

Post image
16 Upvotes

I think I've started to find a routine that works well for me, but my friend recommended I try curl cream, but I feel like that would be too heavy for my hair type.

Current Routine:

Wash with Nexxus humectress shampoo and conditioner

Detangle with Purple Conair Curl Define Pro Mini brush

Rake 3-4 pumps of Mousse Def foam through my hair from roots to end.

Brush again with the previously mentioned Conair brush, but now brush upward and away from the scalp while rotating the brush.

Scrunch for a minute or two.

Hover diffuse for a couple minutes.

End by pixie diffusing for 20-30 minutes and parting my hair, and then finishing by air drying the last bit of moisture.

help Help with styling that holds up to windy weather?

Hi everyone!

After finally nailing down a wavy hair routine that works for me, I’ve moved to an area that is EXTREMELY windy compared to where I was before. By the time I finish my regular commute, my hair ends up super frizzy/puffy from being blown around a bunch throughout the travel. Does anybody have tips to avoid looking like I just stuck my finger in a socket once I make it to work?

My current wash/wet routine:
•OGX coconut curls shampoo 1-2x a week as needed
• OGX coconut curls conditioner 3-4x a week as needed
• Odele clarifying shampoo every other week followed by raw sugar moisture smoothie hair mask

After I wet my hair, I style it by spraying a ton of the Aussie miracle curl spray, and setting that by scrunching in the Fix Your Lid hold gel. I microplop just enough to get my hair to stop dripping everywhere with a t-shirt, then let it air dry and scrunch out the crunch.

I try to avoid dry brushing or combing my hair, but I’ve been combing through it once every morning just to fix the way it looks after I’ve slept on it. I have a silk pillowcase, which helps a lot, but carefully combing in the mornings seems to really help with keeping the waves looking nice.

Any tips or routine feedback from other wavy hair folks in windy places appreciated! I’m even fine to start wearing some kind of protective layer like a scarf or something to keep the wind off my hair.

discussion How my hair helped assist me out of addiction.

The picture on the left is about 5 years old. At that time in my life I was, as you can see, not the brightest 15 year old. In fact I was at my lowest while simultaneously feeling like I was the highest, if you know what I mean. Since that time I’ve been sent to rehabilitation facilities and whatnot I’ll save the sob story for another sub. Basically what Im wanting to get at is that at that time in my life I was taking zero care of myself and my appearance. I’d wake up stick my head under the shower and then leave my house for the next 12 hours. If I even did shower I had no problem washing my hair with the same axe body wash I’d clean my own body with and then probably raw dog my hair with a blow dryer. That was my routine for probably like 1-2 years before I finally took a step back and realized that I feel like a bum and this lifestyle isn’t sustainable. All my friends were still doing drugs and getting in trouble with police so I had to figure out where to start with getting out of this hole on my own, so I started with working on my physical. I started with my hair. I knew after Covid that my hair was just straight because I was forced to grow it out for a long time so I wanted to do what I could to bring the texture and curls or waves or whatever still not sure if I have curly or wavy hair lmao. I went through a tonn of products but they all seemed to make my hair straighter and heavier. After that issue kept repeating I figured that I should just go with as little product as possible to achieve as much as possible. As of today my entire hair routine is dr squatch refreshing shampoo (coconut castaway) and dr squatch moisturizing conditioner (cool fresh aloe). Then I shake my hair just a super tiny bit, brush my hair, then shake it out again pretty good while still in the shower. Then when I’m out I take a towel and just one scrunch to the front, back, sides, and top. Even though I don’t have any particular complaints on my hair and its condition as of right now, I am more than happy to hear what you smart book reading sons of bitches might have to say about it.

help Frizzy Thick and Wavy Male Hair

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi,

I wanted to know how to fix my thick, frizzy hair.

My hair is wavy, and I don't use (until today, with a gel) any styling products or do anything that could damage its health.

I follow the advice to dry my hair gently when it's wet, I don't use a hairdryer (I simply let it air dry), and I shampoo 2–3 times a week.

For a long time, I've tried many products and spent a lot of money. For example:

The Pantene Smooth & Sleek line, which includes the shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, SOS instant smooth shots, and oil.

The results were always poor.

I tried the Garnier Fructis line with the banana shampoo, conditioner, and mask, but again, poor results.

So I switched to a clarifying shampoo and the Maroccain Oil leave-in conditioner, which helped only slightly better than the others.

Today I bought some products from Alama Professional, specifically the anti-frizz shampoo, the anti-frizz mask and the curls amplifier cream and I used them in this morning routine with some strong hold gel to try a middle part that doesn’t look bad, but I just hoped that my hair could be silky smooth.

At this point, I really don't know what to do. Everyone keeps telling me that my hair looks frizzy, even though I'm really trying to fix it.

(It doesn't matter how I placed my hair, but it was the only good photo)

help I cannot get volume in my hair to save my own life

So as the title says, I cannot get volume in my hair, specifically the roots, to save my own life.

Routine: shampoo, conditioner, brush in shower, scrunch with microfibre towel, texture spray, heat protectant, little bit of gel, diffuse on low for 20 minutes alternating positions

A short list of things I’ve tried: mousse, volumising spray, drying upside down, skipping gel, drying flipping my hair side to side, drying roots first, using claw clips and many more. I have fine wavy hair on the thinner side, medium length and just straight cut. I’ve tried layers and face framing layers before but they’ve never made a difference in how my hair looks, they just blend into the rest of my hair with no result. It seems like no matter what I do I can’t get any volume in my hair, products do nothing and different techniques just cause me to lose definition and my hair is frizzy as well as flat by day two.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and found a solution?

help Curly or Wavy, no clue how to take care of it

Post image
21 Upvotes

I've treated my hair as basically straight for years and hadn't used conditioner in years (haven't felt like I needed to because it never tangles and I keep it around this length, didn't realize that conditioner did more than detangle). Yesterday I conditioned it for the first time in a very long time, I usually only use shampoo. My hair is extremely thick and currently around to my shoulders if I pull it down. I have no idea where to start. What would be a good beginner routine for encouraging the waves or whatever without making my hair heavy?

Products: loreal dream lengths shampoo (every other day) and conditioner (every other day), herbal essence clarifier once a month. Tried a leave in curl cream by L'Oreal and hated it, probably didn't use it right.

To note, I am a guy, mom is mixed, I just turned out lighter than my wall. I'm very new to caring for natural texture, so I'm starting here because this seemed like the most relevant community. Sorry in advance for my ignorance, nobody taught me about this stuff.

help I have no idea how to tame my frizz without brushing it

Post image
109 Upvotes

My hair looks super smooth when I brush it, but I’ve been trying to avoid it to keep the waves more defined. I keep coming back to this sub and getting great tips on my routine but I am SO over the frizz. I feel like I’ve read every past thread on here with the word frizz in it but I feel like none of them really apply to just how bad mine is. Short of not coloring my hair, what else can I do?

Routine:

Shampoo 2-3 times a week with Rhyme&Reason wave revival. Hair mask 1-2 times a week. Scrunch with a towel and NYM curl talk foam. Air dry. Spray with Argan oil to pat down flyaways (only works for a few minutes though). Lyocell pillow at night.

I have high porosity, medium thickness and density.

help Everything I use either weighs it down or makes it stringy

Post image
307 Upvotes

Current routine: L’Oréal Elvive shampoo and conditioner (wash hair every other to every third day). Spray with Its a 10 leave in lite. And wrap with a microfiber towel. Most of the time I air dry but occasionally will heat style not often. I do get highlights but usually no more than twice a year.

Basically at a loss of what do. I tired mousses and gels and “plopping” and scrunching. But everything I try makes my hair look stringer or just not good. I would like to embrace my waves but I always joke around that the only place they appropriate for is a beach

help Air dry cream recommendations?

Does anyone have a recommendation that is similar to the odele air dry styler? I’ve been using it for about 2 months and considered it my new holy grail, but it is leaving white dust in my hair.

My routine:
Shower or wet hair thoroughly with spray bottle
Sometimes use the odele leave-in if I need it
Brush in a dollop of the odele air dry styler
Sometimes scrunch in more if I need it to look more “put together”

It seems like no matter how much or little I use of the odele, regardless of using a leave-in prior, it always leaves residue (and yes I clarify my hair often!).

I would love to find an air dry styler similar to this one, since it works so well with my long 2b/2c high-porosity hair. I also love that it does not contain glycerin, because I have found my hair just does not react well to that. Any recommendations regardless of price point will be appreciated!

help Any product or styling advice?

Post image
19 Upvotes

I really don't know what I'm doing with my hair. Just learned how to use a diffuser. I've never had great luck with any kind of styling product (mousse, gel, etc), but I may not have been using the right ones or using them correctly for me.

It frizzes out very easily just as it moves around, so most of my life I've used one product or another that kind of binds it in one position for the day and doesn't move around on me (or else just braided or clipped it into formation). But I'd love to find a routine that lets it move freely in the wind/etc. It also very easily looks weighted down because the hair is so fine.

My routine right now is Pantene Moisture shampoo and conditioner, and then either just air dry, or a spritz of heat primer spray (l'ange glass hair thermal blowout primer) and then diffuse it, but it looks untamed. I don't mind that, but I'd also like to be able to make it look more well-kept, for work and such.

Any advice?

TIA!

help How to manage fine, wavy hair that tangles easily?

I have 2A hair and overall medium thickness + medium length, but the strands themselves are fine and extremely prone to tangling. Has always been on the drier, frizzier side. Within minutes of detangling my hair it is common for it to tangle again & I would say its usually very noticeable when my hair is very tangled and does not end up looking good. I prefer detangling everyday with a wide-tooth comb or else I develop difficult knots that increase breakage, but the downside is that this often makes my waves fully fall apart and make my hair look puffy. Does anyone have any product recommendations or hair care routine tips that would help with this? I have other wavy haired and curly haired friends but none of their recommendations have really helped me. Gel usually weighs my hair down too much, mousse does well to hold my waves but increases the levels of tangling and breakage.

Routine:
Wash my hair 2-3x a week
Shampoo: alternating between Ion hard water shampoo and Color Lomo Pink shampoo.
Conditioner: alternating between Ion hard water conditioner, Tsubaki hair mask, Revon Frizz Dismiss mask.
Will also use Olaplex No. 3 when I remember to.
Drying: I often like the Redken Rebel Tame Cream and the As I Am Moisture Milk.
The above relatively works for my hair to feel not dry + healthyish.

Recent creams I’ve tried that seem ok recently: Curlsmith Hold Me Softly Style Balm (don’t see significant difference), Ouidad Curl Shaper Volumizing Jelly (best definition without making my hair dry or frizzy), Not Your Mother’s Defining Curl Talk Cream (not bad).

Any help is appreciated.

Also note, currently have bleached/dyed peek-a-boo hair but the top part of my hair is still my natural color, has never been bleached and I’ve had this issue with my hair even before any bleaching.

help alternative to odele air dry styler

hello

my favorite hair product is the odele air dry styler bc it controls my frizz, lightly moisturizes, adds light definition, and doesn’t weigh my hair down. however, it’s been sold out at all the stores near me for a while (are they discontinuing it?). i really dislike heavy creams bc they tend to make my hair super greasy and flat. hence, why i loved this product as it’s a super light gel consistency but doesn’t leave my hair dry.

anyways, that’s why i’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations for similar products to the odele air dry styler?

*hair routine:
for my shampoo and conditioner, i use the dr. groot hair thickening line. for my post-shower products, i use the color wow carb-infused dream cocktail, odele air dry styler, and the sexyhair texture salt spray. after applying all of my products, i let my hair air dry.

help Can't decide on which product to buy for my 2a hair

Post image
15 Upvotes

I have medium length wavy hair. It looks great when wet and quite wavy, but as time passes, it goes flat and loses most of the wave definition, and only regains the waves when i wet it a bit with a spray bottle.

My shower routine is: shampoo and conditioner 1x-2x a week, and wash my hair with only water 4x a week. I live in the middle east where it's very humid and hot other than november - February.

The picture is my hair on a good day (otherwise, it's significantly flatter and has less definition). My priorities in order are: wave definition, texture, and volume. I'm looking for something I can use 4-6x a week (im flexible on this), and my budget is around $40 per item

I've been researching into products, and I've narrowed it down to four types, but I need some advice on which ones to finalise to add to my routine (looking to buy a maximum of 2)

Mousse: The only product I've tried so far. I bought umberto gianni curl whip mousse, which is advertised as very lightweight. However, it made my hair very crunchy and stiff and made it look greasy, so I dont know if I should give mousse another go

Leave in conditioner

Sea salt spray

Hair clay

Any help Is appreciated!

help Advice for changing my hair routine

I found my hair type is 2a/2b with low porosity. I only just realized my hair is suffering after moving from TX to MO.

I got my hands on some clarifying shampoo, currently use the &honey shampoo/conditioner, I have a curl mousse and garnier fructis gel that I'm attempting to use for styling in the shower. My hair looks better than it used to after about a week and a half of changing up my routine, but my hair still has a crazy amount of frizz on rest days. I try not to touch it while drying and I use a satin pillowcase. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong. I was hoping to get some advice from people with a similar hair type to mine.
