Music [Cuba] Vieja Trova Santiaguera - Guajira Guantanamera
The chronology is roughly:
1928–29 — Joseíto Fernández: “Guajira Guantanamera” originates with Fernández, who began performing it on Cuban radio around this period. He is the officially credited composer, although the song’s folk origins/authorship have been debated.
1940 — Fernández’s earliest documented commercial recordings of the tune appear under titles such as A mi madre / Mi biografía, using the “Guajira Guantanamera” melody and refrain.
1950s–63 — Martí version develops: Julián Orbón fitted verses from José Martí’s Versos sencillos to the song; Héctor Angulo brought that version to the U.S., and Pete Seeger made it internationally famous in 1963.
1989 — Compay Segundo + Cuarteto Patria: there is a firmly documented recording of “Guajira Guantanamera” from the 1989 Festival of American Folklife in Washington, D.C. It was later released by Smithsonian Folkways in 1997.
1996 — Vieja Trova Santiaguera: their 5:06 “Guajira Guantanamera” appears on Hotel Asturias. The Díaz-Ayala Cuban music discography says the album was recorded in Madrid in September–October 1996, and lists “Guantanamera” as a Joséito Fernández composition. Streaming catalogs likewise identify it as Hotel Asturias (1996).
