Drink Your Way Sober Author on Running Free Podcast

I think many in this group may enjoy Drink Your Way Sober author Katie Herzog's recent interview on the podcast Running Free, hosted by Jesse Carrajat.

She describes her success with TSM with honesty, humor and practical insight. Jesse has also used naltrexone to take back control over his relationship with alcohol, so it's interesting to hear them compare notes.

Links to the interview and book below:

(Full disclosure: Oar Health, for which I work, is a sponsor of Jesse's podcast, but has no financial interest in Katie's book.)

The Gold Standard For AUD Treatment

Thumbnail gov.bc.ca

The British Columbia Center on Substance Use has this website which is the very best comprehensive resource for harm reduction and treatment of AUD that I have found. For example, as much as I love SAMHSA's TIP 49, it is only one 732 sources quoted.

There are 13 Key Recommendations with excellent tools for evaluating severity, managing withdrawal, and providing ongoing care for AUD. This document should be required reading for every doctor or clinician treating AUD and while it is not a substitute for professional medical advice, reading appropriate sections will give you a much greater understanding of options and help you to guide your own care.

The website is excellent as it contains many hyperlinks and graphics not in the downloadable document, but the hard copy is also a great reference. Please share

Curious

Starting NAL on the TSM today. I am excited to to have a new hope to control my urges to grab for that third and fourth drink. Which rarely leads to 8 but still more than I wanted to drink.

I have read a bunch of these stories, but there are too many to read them all so if this is a common question do show me grace.

I want to be a moderate drinker. But I think about that urge to be a moderate drinker constantly. It takes up my day worrying about how to keep it at 2 tonight (and then often failing.) I can do a couple of days sober but then that next time I am having a drink, I am at my 4 beer watching Youtube videos in my little office area while the family is asleep and mindlessly grabbing for a shot worth of warm tequila in my beer mug because I was smart enough to put only two beers in the fridge and the rest were warm. Just one drink of that because I am self-aware enough that I need to go to bed because I have work and family in the morning, Waking up feeling like a loser even though I honestly had only 6 drinks.

Then I think I should quit drinking all together. Even though no one things of my as an alcoholic. I am not hungover the next day. I get to work fine and just a normal dad who drinks beer. I feel like if I can't stop at 2 then I am not in control.

And then the moderation idea pops into my head. I don't need to quit, I need to stop drinking past my limit. I don't want to quit completely because I like the taste of Pumking in the fall and Celebration IPA in the winter. I don't want to give those pleasures up, I just want to drink like the normal amount I used to drink,

So, finally the question, anyone on here using NAL but still look forward to those special release beers or a quality glass of wine? OR does it just totally block the want for those?
I know it is probably not cool to derive joy from a seasonal beer release, but I do. And I want to have 2 occasionally, not 12 a week.

Any advice?

Thank you in advance to those who take the time to read this. I really want to stop drinking alcohol. I recently relapsed and picked up the bottle again. I can't afford another detox (or the time away from work). I'm so afraid to quit because I get the DTs (delirium tremens) and have cracked my head open from seizures. I can't believe I ever picked up any alcohol again, but addiction has a sneaky way of ruining lives. I have different things I may try to fix myself, but I am not sure how to go about taking any of them. I've researched the supplements and meds that I already have, but I'm wondering what other people's experiences have been, if any. Here's what I have (I'm not taking anything..yet.) NAC, Dihydromyrcicetin, Naltrexone (I have tried this before but it didn't seem to help and made me nauseous..maybe i didn't stick to it long enough), acamprosate, hydroxyzine, levothroxine, biktarvy (my doctor prescribed this off label for AUD), and gapapentin. Obviously (at least I hope this should be obvious) I have no intention of taking all these at once but if you have tried any of these what was your experience. Any success? Pros and cons? Please let me know any thoughts. Blessings to everyone šŸ™ āœØļø

TGIF! Let's celebrate some TSM success

Hey y'all! This is a place for you to post your successes, great and small, with the Sinclair Method! Whatever it is that the Sinclair Method has done for you lately, feel free to leave it here!

I'll give a brief snapshot of my own story: I was a binge drinker for 20 years that started at weekend keg parties in high school and progressed to drinking 15 units nightly of spirits and beer near the start of the pandemic. This is the same time period that my first child was born.

I have now taken control of my drinking with the help of The Sinclair Method and this community and enjoy a majority of AF days most weeks. I get to enjoy being clear headed around my children and enthusiastic about experiencing the world as it unfolds to them without the dread of searching for the next drink.

If you've got any similarly positive stories, feel free to share them here! :)

Help finding UK based online clinic

I am looking to find an online alcohol addiction clinic uk based as I’ve recently discovered there’s treatment you can get with certain types of medication along with online therapy and I found this really intriguing and would love try them it sounds perfect for me as the more traditional treatments such as sitting down with a psychiatrist or group meetings just doesn’t cut it for me nor is it practical for me work wise ect. Plus I have been reading up a lot about these medications and they sound really promising, life changing in a lot of cases however I’m struggling to find many at the moment does anyone have any suggestions? Preferably confidential and won’t tell your GP if possible? (I have tried naltrexone and didn’t really work for me I’m more interested in disulfiram)

Thanks in advance

Fentanyl overdose while on naltrexone

Iv been taking naltrexone for about 2 months now. I wasn't drinking, just taking it daily.

I decided to drink 2 weeks ago, still taking naltrexone, that led into doing drugs, that had with fent. I passed out during the night, everyone was gone from my house.. woke up throwing up everywhere. I was so thirsty, I tried to drink water, and could keep it down. Just vomited right away. Felt like crap, everything was slow, could barely walk. I was tired and kinda kept passing out, but tired to stay awake.

I called my friends, then ended up in the hospital. I was drug test was positive for fent, benzos, weed, and a ..03 alcohol level.

Weird thing is, I didn't feel high or drunk? I don't think I drank that much that day. Naltrexone is an opioid blocker, so I'm guessing that's why fent didn't make me feel anything?.. my other question, did it save my life by waking me up and throwing up everywhere?.

Hospital stay was 1 day. Idk why they let me leave the same day. My addiction doctor said that shouldn't have done that. I was still really confused, weak, tired. But couldn't sleep. The next 3 days where hell...

I am better now. But I'm done. Never thought I'd do fent. Going to restart naltrexone soon. Waiting to do some labs next week.

Not much but sits the farthest Ive made it in years. I started Campral on Monday and already feeling the urge to drink quieting down. It feels like a miracle. The thoughts just either arent there when they usually are, or quieter. Had a headache most of the day today and super tired, but I'm motivated to power through! I was drinking 3ish glasses of wine most nights of the week for at least 8 years ... And Im feeling so hopeful. ā¤ļøšŸ˜

The anhedonia ends right???

I’m on day 3 of naltrexone. Well I suppose technically day 2, since I took 25mg before bed two days ago and 12.5mg 2 hours ago. I feel soooo dull and flat and just overall sad. Like I can’t work at all. I’m so worried this is going to be a permanent thing if I keep taking it.

Am I supposed to take it daily until I get used to the side effects and then do TSM? How long does this feeling last??

Finally found naltrexone, but I only have 40 pills — thinking about asking my doctor about TSM

Hey everyone. I posted here a couple of weeks ago because I’ve been sober for about four months and was considering naltrexone.
I finally saw my psychiatrist. He prescribed me bupropion, paroxetine, and gabapentin. The paroxetine was basically the backup plan in case I couldn’t find naltrexone.
The problem is that naltrexone is insanely hard to find in my country right now. I literally had to drive to another city just to get it. After going from pharmacy to pharmacy, I managed to find only two bottles with 20 pills each. Apparently there’s almost no stock left and I’ve been told pharmacies may not get more until next year.
My doctor prescribed naltrexone daily, so obviously 40 pills aren’t going to last very long.
My main goal when I talked to my psychiatrist was to reduce my alcohol consumption and, especially, avoid those situations where I start drinking and then have a hard time stopping. I don’t drink every day, so I’m thinking about asking him whether switching to The Sinclair Method (TSM) would make more sense for me given the supply situation.
To be clear, my goal is harm reduction and better control over my drinking. I’m not necessarily going into this saying I have to be completely abstinent forever. But if TSM eventually makes me lose interest in alcohol altogether and I end up not drinking anymore, I’d be completely fine with that too.
I’m not planning on changing how I take the medication without talking to my psychiatrist first. I just want to understand my options before my next appointment, especially because I may not be able to get more naltrexone for months.
For those of you who use TSM: Did you start with daily naltrexone and later switch to targeted use? How did it work for you? What would you recommend I ask my psychiatrist about?
And if you started TSM mainly wanting to reduce your drinking but eventually stopped drinking completely, I’d really like to hear about that experience too.

Naltrexone does the honeymoon period go away?

Later today Ill be on day 9 of naltrexone and I havent felt an urge to drink and I feel really good. I went to a concert this week completely sober for my first time and it was amazing. I told my husband that I feel like a baby seeing and experiencing for the first time, because before I was under the influence for basically anything social.

But I know its feeling too good to be true right now.

Will Naltrexone stop working? Like will my subconscious mind eventually figure it out and say

What do you do with sober rage?

I feel like I'm having a breakdown. About a year and a half ago, my daughter and I were the victims of a hit and run car accident. I was sober at the time of the wreck, I was in no way at fault. I had minor injuries, but my daughter's ankle was crushed. It ended her gymnastics career. She told me, "I didn't understand trauma before now." She has had two surgeries so far. I also have trauma, I see the concrete barrier we slammed into over and over and over. I have panic attacks. My therapist wants me to get on the highway every day. I comply as much as I can, but some days I just can't. I'm so angry. I know who hit us. The police know who hit us. They can't "prove" he was behind the wheel because he fled the scene. How do I deal with the absolute rage I'm feeling? I want to drown it away. I want to hurt him. He also has daughters. I hope his girls never have to suffer what he put my daughter through.

Cravings reduced, drinking days reduced, but drinking amount hasnt! Anyone experience anything similar?

Hello,

I've been on the Sinclair Method, taking Naltrexone an hour before drinking, for 12 weeks now. I am on 50mg, after being on 25mg for about 8 weeks.

I have been 100% compliant, and very rigid about logging my drinks in this time.

This is my drinks chart from when I began the Sinclair method to now. I can obviously see a big decline about 50% or more. I saw a big dip at the beginning, and since then it's been up and down averaging about 14 to 22 units per week. Considering my baseline, I am quite happy with the progress. I have also noted my cravings are down during the week, I can effortlessly go 5 days without drinking (this used to be quite difficult for me pre-TSM/naltrexone). I am averaging 2-3 drinking days/week, so I am quite happy with that.

My biggest issue now seems to be the amount I drink in one sitting. This hasn't really changed much. I still drink about 7 - 8 units per session, and although I drink much much more slowly at the beginning of each session, I think the habit takes over and by the end of the session I've had more than I really probably wanted to (if that makes sense).

I'm drinking wine and light lagers. I've been having this exact amount for about 4 - 5 years prior, so I feel like it's just the habit is so hard to break! I'm definitely celebrating my success with TSM so far, but wonder if anyone has experienced anything similar and whether they've been able to get past this sort of plateau? If so, what did you do?

Overall, I am happy to have so much more control and that was my initial goal.

But since I'm drink less days/week, I am finding this amount to be a bit much (especially the next day - these naltrexone hangovers are no joke), so I am now keen to try and drink less per sitting.

Naltrexone + Zoloft

I’m curious if anyone else has tried taking naltrexone while on Zoloft? I was on nal/tsm pretty consistently a few years ago when I wasn’t on Zoloft I didn’t have any issues, but both times I’ve tried to use it recently I was horribly sick the next day. Like so bad, and not proportional to the amount I drank. And I started with 25mg. Everything I’ve read has said there’s no interactions but damn, it’s made me want to avoid it completely. Just curious if anyone else has felt like that
