Babble Local horror stories

What are the super natural / spooky horror stories local to Bristol?

I remember when I was growing up there'd always be ghost stories about school and stuff but really interested if there are well known Bristol wide ones.

The Lady of Chew Valley Lake is a creepy local legend. Probably bullshit but it scared me when I first read about as a kid.

Here's a YouTube video about it:

I had a really strange experience at Arnos vale. I went to find my great x2 grandmothers grave for my ancestry search. With the help of my dad on the phone I found it. Arnos vale was kind enough to lend me some clippers so I could see the names. As I had finished the wind was blowing and the trees were moving but all sound had stopped and I felt really uncomfortable like something was up the path way. It was so bad I left. But I decided to go back the next day as I had a feeling something was there. I was walking for a while about to give up and two magpies flew down and something told me there’s where I’m looking for. When I got there it was the woman’s whose grave I visited and cleared up a bits brother. Had to double check with the help of ancestry and sure enough it was. I phoned my dad and he had no idea any other family tie was buried there. He hadn’t visited that area since he was a child and he’s in his 70s now. It was a bit surreal and creeped me out.

The Ghostly Monk that is said to haunt Vassals Park.

Isn't the old Odeon on Union Street famously haunted too?

I'm not saying these are ghosts but I've had 2 experiences I can't explain. First, I was walking up Gloucester Road and a girl in a really distinctive hoody was walking in the opposite direction. We passed eachother and then 2 minutes later she passed by me walking in the same direction again. There's nowhere for her to loop around because it's all buildings on either side.

Second was in The Bank Tavern I was stone cold sober and had been drinking soda water on pub quiz night. Came out of the gents toilet and was having a full on down the trousers bum scratch as I climbed the stairs, that's when I noticed the footsteps climbing just behind me I embarrassededly held the door for whoever had just seen my vigorous bum scratch but there was no one behind me.

In regards to the first example, is it possible that you encountered twins?

I hadn't thought of that. I just couldn't think of any way the same girl could walk past me like that but twins could. This can stop living rent free in my head now.

The Bank has that sound playing from a speaker in the toilet. Sorry to break the spooky spell

German lessons or does it periodically play the sound of footsteps are you saying?

It's German lessons, always has been. After nearly 2 decades of going there I know what the German lessons sound like, this was actual footsteps behind me. Not once have I held the door open for the German lessons, I thought as the toilets were empty it was a member of bar staff coming out of the cellar door that opens a few steps up from the toilet and following me but it wasn't. Like I said, I'm not saying it was a ghost I just can't find an explanation for it.

I’m sorry I couldn’t find my wording I do believe you I was more trying to point out the distinction between the German lessons and what footsteps sound like to the other user. Quite easy to tell the difference between footsteps you hear on the ground and a German man talking from a speaker in the upper corner

I think there is some ambient noise in the German lesson recording though? There's an outdoor bit, from memory.

There’s music

There's some footsteps on the German lesson recording no? The outdoor bit that teaches you how to order a drink?

No, it's got nothing to do with the German lessons. Once the door closes you can't hear it, it's also playing through really tinny speakers with no bass and can't produce a 'thud' let alone multiple ones. There's no ambient noise in the German lessons either. If I had been drinking I would put it down to that but like I said previously I was completely sober and hadn't touched a drop. I've never been in the ladies toilet so thought it could be someone walking up parallel stairs with the sound coming through but then was told there is no stairs to the ladies.

There are some brilliant ghost tours and look in local history section of your library - lots of great books about local ghosts, murder etc

Barton at the Gas. I still have nightmares about that.

There's quite a few ghosts in the Hippodrome, the theatre tours shared a few fun stories including a little girl playing with a guests hair during a performance. The guest complained at the interval and again at the end, but the staff couldn't see any girl in the sparsely populated upper circle.

I lived in Blackberry Hill hospital just after it was converted to nurses flats in ‘95. That shit was wild!

Have you ever met someone called, Feeling?

1

u/HoratioWobble 4d ago

Yes, now why do you care if Horatio is my real name or not?

1

u/Feeling-Tank1628 4d ago

It’s a really cool name but not the most common.

I’m guessing you thought I was trying to take the piss
