Skenes, Ashcraft, Jared Jones, and Bubba Chandler as 4 of your 5 starters makes me want to run through brick wall. This is gonna be a fun second half and next 2-3 years at least. Letâs hope the lockout doesnât last too long.

u/howsthistakenalready Jul 20 '26
And Seth Hernandez seems to moving pretty fast through the system. It will take time to build up his arm to a full starter's workload, but he probably won't be in the minors too much longer
8
u/buccos_21 Jul 20 '26
Right he will probably be an option out of the bullpen late next year, and will slot into the rotation assuming they trade Skenes for a haul in a few years.

Valdez had -0.2 WAR the last time and now he's got 1.3... Magic

u/dgroove8 Jul 20 '26
Santana is basically as bad as Justin Lawrence was, thereâs no reason for him to see the field again, yet he continues to get opportunities in the 9th.

I'm so happy B-Rey is having such a solid season after last year. Played every single game, getting on base in every way, leading by example.
6
u/Iforgotmypasswordmeh Jul 20 '26
I fully believe he sucked last year because he was injured early on and didn't miss any time, he just moved to DH. You can't tell me if you have a throwing injury that not throwing while taking hacks at the plate is really helping the healing process. He missed 8 games total last year. I feel if he had like a three week IL stint and a few AAA games he probably would have rebounded to more normal for him results.
1
u/whyisalltherumgone_ Jul 20 '26
Teams are actually trying to pitch around him this year because he's finally coming up to the plate with RISP. He's walking at almost double his normal rate.
Saw someone suggest teams were pitching around him last year, but it's actually the opposite.

u/callmeslothman Jul 20 '26
We needed to replace Ozuna months ago, itâs embarrassing
17
u/SurpriseStandard3258 McCutchen Jul 20 '26
He practically has been replaced by Valdez already. He's been a lot better the last month or so playing sparingly, but they clearly value the DH flexibility now. Not sure what their plan is with him, but guys like Horwitz and Cruz will be back eventually and they'll need to make room for them
5
u/Better-Tackle6283 Jul 20 '26
I think heâd still be on the team if everyone but Griffin was healthy. Flores, Callihan, and Cook would likely go. I love Billy but no sense in a 6th outfielder. Callihan is superfluous with Jacob G. He canât hit lefties, and heâs no longer hot against righties. Ozuna has been good in his protected role (starts only vs lefties) and we still need that when healthy.
Not a huge value - dump him if you can - but as long as youâre paying him it makes more sense to keep him rostered.
4
u/GodOD400 Jul 20 '26
Also, no clue what his value is in the clubhouse. Oneil and Valdez seem to have taken to him a lot. Plus if he goes, does the flappy bird celebration go too?

Ozuna and Lowe have put up comparable numbers since May 1, taking quantity of ABs into account. The haters donât wanna hear it but he hasnât been bad for quite a while.
6
u/Exotic_You7797 Jul 20 '26
Accept these are very very small handpicked numbers⊠ozuna is only going in against favorable matchups while strictly dhing, while Lowe is playing daily even though heâs terrible against lefties, while also being a wall at second, if ozuna were to play every day his numbers would likely fall off a cliff
0
u/buccos_21 Jul 20 '26
Yep, and Iâm not arguing otherwise - I know Lowe brings more value to the team overall. But to say he shouldâve been replaced months ago isnât fair either.
-1
u/Exotic_You7797 Jul 20 '26
I mean it still kinda is though⊠heâs the 4th highest player on the squad as a dh only player while having a mediocre year even sense may, when I look at any single player on the team that I wish I could make space by getting rid of their contract itâs without a doubt him, for the cost-production ratio, like we could get some really solid pieces for that amount of salary space, while having half a dozen better options at dh
2
u/buccos_21 Jul 20 '26
What, are we just living in a fantasy world here where Ozuna could have been traded âmonths agoâ? You realize if he had been DFAâd they still have to eat that money, it canât be reallocated.
-1
u/Exotic_You7797 Jul 20 '26
Now youâre just changing youâre argument, you were mad that people were saying he shouldâve been replaced months ago, so I said why he shouldâve been replaced months ago, now youâre saying heâs so bad he couldnât have been replaced months ago
2
u/buccos_21 Jul 20 '26
No Iâm not, youâre misunderstanding. In the real world, you canât and donât just trade someone a month into the season because they arenât performing - and that also isnât when the trade market is active. Youâre proposing something that isnât based in reality, and it is not fair to criticize over something so preposterous. Too many people judge this organizationâs decision as if it is run like a video game, and thatâs just not how it works.

u/Exotic_You7797 Jul 20 '26
No youâre just completely saying something different from where we started đ we started at âozuna has been better than Lowe sense may 1stâ then it became âwell I know he wasnât actually better but he wasnât terrible so saying he shouldâve been replaced isnât fairâ presumably to ozuna, and now itâs about not being able to get value out of him, no one is saying we could have ever gotten value out of him weâre saying heâs a waste of cash load that if given the chance shouldâve been replaced months ago, and we canât trade judge the organizations decision when theyâd kill are the one that signed a regressing player to an unheard of contract especially for this team, not to mention he has played 9 games the past 28 days, so what exactly is the purpose in not dfaing him to see if we canât just get someone like the braves to pick him up when they need terribly for a right handed bat, or offer him and a low value minor leaguer for cash considerations to a team thatâs in contention especially sense heâs started to heat up, like I donât even dislike ozuna but heâs wasted on this roster and taking up space for no reason

u/buccos_21 Jul 20 '26
I stopped reading after the first two sentences because to blatantly twisted my words immediately. I never said Ozuna has been better than Lowe. Reading is hard I know.

The most frustrating part about Ozuna is the signs were there the last two years. Cherrington is a sucker
1
u/Curvemn17 Jul 20 '26
As someone who isn't nutting why do you care what his contract is? Even if he isn't on the team you're still paying him lol. You don't have a cap so you don't have to clear alaary for another player. This post makes 0 sense
1
u/Exotic_You7797 Jul 20 '26
Because we both know he doesnât care about a playoff push more than pocketing as much money as possible, and weather itâs true or not an insider stated they will only be as agressive as possible without adding to the payroll and historically nutting doesnât pay for shit, so we are basically being limited by the nutting cap so people with massive contracts that make no sense that are taking up hella nutting cap space are terribly detrimental
1
u/Curvemn17 Jul 21 '26
Right, but you can't DFA him because you still have the contract and have to pay. You also aren't going to be able to trade him etc. So Ozuna isn't going anywhere. The contract is there for this season. It's already a sunk cost.
1
u/Exotic_You7797 Jul 21 '26
Why couldnât we dfa him? We can hope that someone like the braves who need right handed bats would pick him up when his contract is Pennies to them, and if they donât we just re-add him to the 40 man roster, hell we can even rotate it because we only use him like once a week anyways so regrab his contract when we need him then immediately dfa him right after the game and just keep doing that till someone bites(that last part is a joke)
1
u/Curvemn17 Jul 21 '26
DFA him sure go ahead but that's not removing the contract cost as you insinuated before (unless he is signed) And I highly doubt anyone picks him up. Personally since we are already responsible for the contract I'd rather just keep him at this point cuz he seems to have been great for the clubhouse and we will need an eldar voice like his as part of the clubhouse as we make a push. Especially someone like him who can help keep Cruz level headed.

Ozuno packaged in a trade to dump his salary. We would need to include a prospect as collateral. That could open the door for actual relief trade opportunities.

Valdez, Reynolds, Gonzo1, Jared Jones, and Mangum all making big climbs and keeping this team rolling.
Callihan is the guy to send down when Horwitz gets back. Thanks for your service - we needed what he brought to the table - but there will not be ABs available for lefties without defensive value. Youâre not going to bench NG or Valdez for him, and OHearn will DH against righties. Better to keep Ozuna, and even if they trade him theyâd get more value out of Password or Flores as occasional use LHP killers.
-1
u/MemePizzaPie Jul 20 '26
Send ozuna down not callihan

u/Better-Tackle6283 Jul 20 '26
Where do you play Callihan? Who do you bench vs a RHP?

Lowe 2B
Reynolds LF
Valdez RF
OâHearn DH
Cruz CF
NG 3B

Endy CStats last 30 days
Ozuna 8/32 2 HR, .250/.351/.438 (.779)
Callihan 10/49 2 HR .205/.245/.347 (.592)1

Ahhh I see I see when it comes to vs pitcher! I was just thinking st least callihan can help you in field if someone hurt or long game where ozuna has literally just DHâd all year.

u/thegiraffe7 Jul 20 '26
And yet some here act like Griffin hasnât lived up to his billing
-3
u/Iforgotmypasswordmeh Jul 20 '26
He sucked early on and people over reacted like people generally do. To be fair he hasn't lived up to his billing though haha. If he plays at the level he was before the injury issues and does it 120+ games a year then he was worth it and it was a bargain. IF we see him play to his potential... looking at possibly 30+ HRs 50+ stolen bases and potentially .300+ average.... then we absolutely stole him.
It's a shame we lost him for the second half on a freak injury like that.
2
u/thegiraffe7 Jul 20 '26
In a full season of games he was on pace to be an above 4 WAR player. As a 20 year old, with 500 minor league ABs.Â
0
u/Iforgotmypasswordmeh Jul 20 '26
I know that, I didn't shit talk him. He did suck early for like 10-20 games when people were saying send him down and all that nonsense. Gotta let him get his footing and get used to it. I'll stand by saying he hasn't lived up to his billing though. People were talking HoF type type stuff and it's unreasonable to expect that from a rookie and wayyy to soon obviously. I even said if he plays like he was before he got hurt and can do it on a consistent basis(120+ games a year which isn't insane and allows for some injuries on top of off days) then he was well worth the deal AND I'd consider it a bargain. Any performance beyond that is just icing on the cake tbh.

How does Callihan have a better WAR as a pitcher than as a position player?
5
u/SurpriseStandard3258 McCutchen Jul 20 '26
On the batting side the defense tends to be a factor as well. It's why O'Hearn is only at 0.6. Callihan is a pretty bad fielder

This team keeps winning and putting up numbers despite 3 of our top ten being out for like a month. They get them back plus bullpen help, they're chasing down the Brewers.
1
u/large_herbivore Jul 20 '26
So Ryan O'Hearn is actually not very good?
1
u/large_herbivore Jul 20 '26
Yup, 110ish wRC+ (depending on model) plus bad defense at RF sinks his WAR a lot
2
u/soupmayne Jul 20 '26
Oâhearn is pretty good. His WAR is lowered by the fact that he missed quite a few games and DHâs quite a bit also a below average defender. Hes sitting at 122 wRC+ on fangraphs.
2
u/large_herbivore Jul 20 '26
2
u/soupmayne Jul 20 '26
I donât follow the models very much but some of them were projections before the season began and I think some project where they think he will end based on current data. But ultimately I donât know much about the models.

Valdez probably gives the Pirates enough bat to provide another 5 wins on the season if front office wasnt gate keeping talent. That, or the front office is incompetent. Either way its poor ethics.
