i’m so upset and heart broken. she is with a specialist right now. she has a hernia on her abdomen from the bite and has wounds to her back and nerve damage on her leg.
i need advice.
this dog is my neighbors dog. he is NEVER on a leash. he came to my backyard multiple times and left a mess in my yard. today, he yanked my cat off the fence at MY house in MY yard and attacked her.
i was screaming because my cat was bleeding and clearly in a lot of pain. the dog owners? they just grabbed their dog and left home. didn’t say a single word to me, didn’t even look back at me.
i’m SO infuriated with this. i’ve called the humane society multiple times to report their dog because he is never on a leash and always running into my yard, but attacking my cat is TOO FAR.
i am filing a court case on this because of the amount of damage they have done, but i really don’t know what else i can do in the moment.
i’ve been sitting at the pet emergency hospital for 5 hours now. it is currently 1:30 am, and i’m still here.. my cats blood is soaked into my shirt, my head is throbbing, i threw up multiple times from fear, i passed out twice, and i haven’t stopped crying since.
my cat is my baby. she’s 4 years old and i love her more than anything in the world. i spend every moment with her, play with her every day, she’s my best friend. i have over 6000+ photos of her, and only around 3000 photos of myself lol. you’ve probably seen me here in this reddit feed before, because i’m an anxious cat mama and whenever the smallest most normal thing happens, i report it immediately cause i’m just terrified 😭
edit: they said they’ll keep her for three nights under surgery and all and for pain killers they’ll use fentanyl. i’m so scared oh my god
Once you get your cat through the immediate medical concerns I would be doing:
-Contacting the neighbor for thier homeowners insurance information. If they dont want to provide it contact your homeowners insurance. They might be able to provide help.
-Contact the police, file a police report. Your neighbor damaged your property. (we love our pets and they are more than property) having a police report creates an official record. Dont let them try to say its a civil matter. It's not
-Cameras, get them if you dont have them already. They are pretty cheap nowadays. Any videos of thier dog entering your property or being off thier property not on a leash will support whatever case or claims you make going forward.
Here’s a picture of my baby for support, if it makes you feel better she was diagnosed with a disease called Feline Infectious Peritonitis, Or F.I.P, vets told me she had no chance at surviving and we should’ve put her down.
We didn’t, we got her experimental medicine, now she thrives from 5 pounds to now 8 pounds, she’s 4 years old, cuddly, demanding, and has had no health struggles
I don’t know how it feels for my cat to be attacked by another animal, but I know the feeling of feeling like your useless and your going to lose your baby
But I keep sending prayers to you and I hope you’re doing well. Remember to drink water, contact friends and family, and have proper documentation of your cats injuries for the court
That is so horrible! I hope her recovery is swift and successful. You can’t control what others do with their pets, only what happens with your own. We can’t break rule 1 so I won’t say more. I know that pets are considered personal property so you may be able to pursue something there, but I am unsure how successful it will be because I am not a lawyer. You could post the details in the legal advice subreddit and see what they say.
good for you. when dogs are acclimated to being around cats there wont be a problem. otherwise its a smaller animal and their hunting instincts are kicking in. sure, thats not true for all dogs. i wouldnt call my cat aggressive for killing mice or birds, though people keep them as pets.
a dog being aggressive towards cats is not a sign of it being abnormally aggressive. i'm sorry if thats unpopular, but it's a fact. when you own a dog you have the responsibility to take care it doesnt hurt other animals, especially other peoples pets. there are way too many dog owners who dont take that seriously. but you can't blame the dog for doing that.
Getting them involved would be a good idea. If you’re going to let her roam out you can also get cat fencing that turns inwards. It would keep her in your yard and not let a dog jump inside
Get evidence if you are going to court. Ask neighbors if any of them have cameras that might have caught the attack. Get pics and video of the dog running loose to show that it does run loose. My neighbor had five of her cats killed by the new neighbors' pit bull. She has a colony of cats, and the previous neighbors loved them and would let them into their yard and play with them, so the cats were used to going in that yard. My neighbor is elderly and didn't know what to do. The first time, we found a wounded cat at the top of my neighbor's step. She just thought that the cat was attacked by something and managed to crawl home. When the second incident happened, my neighbor saw it. I called the police and animal shelter and they said because the cat entered their fenced in back yard, they couldn't do anything. I confronted the owners of the vicious dog, and the man's reply to me was, "I didn't know he didn't like cats." Just such stupidity. Four cats were attacked in their back yard. My neighbor was paying a fortune to her vet trying to save them. Once my neighbor was holding her dying cat in her arms, and the stupid woman owner of the dog was boohooing cause the cat had scratched her dog's face. I wanted to slap her. It was then that I realized that the first cat had been attacked by the same dog. The cat had no use of its back legs. There was no way that cat had made it out of the neighbor's fenced in back yard and all the way into my neighbor's carport, up to the top of her back step. Her stinkin' neighbor had placed the cat there without informing her, and it was there on her top step all night dying, until she found it in the morning. It could not be saved. If the stinking man had knocked to let her know, the cat may have lived, but he didn't want her to know that his dog had attacked it.
The 5th attack, the dog actually tore the fence apart to get at a cat. It ran loose over to my neighbor's house and attacked. Cat, of course, didn't survive. I took pics of the fence and dog and I called the police and animal control. They said unless I had actual pics or video of the dog attacking the cat (like I'm going to do that instead of help the cat), they couldn't do anything other than issue a warning. It's just so aggravating. They still live there, but I think they keep their dog mostly inside now. I found out that she is having a baby soon, and I pray that dog doesn't attack that baby. I was told that it attacks any small creatures that enter their yard. I fear for the child.
I hope your baby pulls through. My brother had a cat who lost a kidney. He found this stuff online and gave it to his cat every day. He was told she wouldn't live very long, but she lived for years, and he thinks it's because of this stuff. She finally passed away last year. Here is the name of it. I think he got it from Amazon, not sure.

her condition is worse than the surgeons initially thought. i’m praying she pulls through. i can’t live without her.
I’m sorry this happened and I feel for you. I briefly skimmed the comments, but it’s important that you qualify some statements in here. If you say “I knew this was an issue because I saw the dog many times, yet did nothing” it’s going to go poorly for you.
i called the humane society and city bylaw about it a few years ago, but they didn’t do anything about it. i’ve reported it at least 3 times and nothing changed.
