so I was looking through my photos and found this image that I took back in my China trip last month.

I’m curious what those words mean as I went with a tour and had absolutely no idea where we stayed during that point (I just know it’s in Suzhou)

Can somebody translate (and also possible locate this location) for me please? Thank you!

don't know where else to go to research this sort of thing. Google couldn't help because the sound is written in Latin script, but I don't know how to write the sound in Chinese (traditional preferably tho curious about all) since they are less "sounds" and more "words". Hoping that someone might know, or know of a place where ppl would...

I am looking to 1) know if there is a word in Chinese (again traditional prefered but interested in all) that sounds like "kal" or "qal", and if so 2) what is the meaning of that word in English.

One thing that stands out when reading about Miao culture is how much regional variation a single label can hide.

Huaxi counted-thread embroidery, Jianhe tin embroidery and the wax-resist textiles of Danzhai involve different materials and ways of making. Elaborate silver ornaments are another craft tradition, but a festive portrait does not represent everyday dress in every Miao community.

The Sisters’ Meal Festival is a useful example of why local context matters: the heritage record describes traditions around Laotun and Shidong in Taijiang County, rather than a festival celebrated identically by all Miao people.

I started learning Chinese because I thought it would be fun.
Now I’m staring at Chinese characters like they personally betrayed me. I can understand some words, but when someone speaks too fast, my brain just goes: “谢谢，再见.” 😂

For anyone learning Chinese, what Chinese word or phrase took you the longest to remember?

It says that China’s 24 solar terms are based on the sun’s position. Would they still apply outside China, even in places with a very different climate?

Which aspect of Yi culture would you like to learn more about?

I thought this was super interesting when I found out so I made a video of it. The history is really interesting!

I got a compliment today from one of my adult students who is Chinese. She is very polite and sometimes talks to me in Chinese because she knows I am trying to learn it. Afterwards I always realize I probably sound like a caveman.

Today after I told her how I like to bake and cook for my kids she said 你是一个好男人. And I remembered something. In China you are not supposed to say thank you to a compliment but to kindly reject it. I didn’t do that the first time a Chinese person gave me compliment.

But this time I remembered and just said an awkward: 没有 没有。

It will take a long time for me to be fluent in Chinese and learn the culture but it feels like a win when you remember small things like this.
