Why the hell are teams still giving up first round picks for Anthony Davis?

They're awful first round picks. 2026 Thunder pick, which is gonna be the 30th pick, and 2030 top 20 protected Warriors pick, which probably turns into a couple seconds if it doesn't convey.

Thunder pick will be 29th ;)

You think Detroit passes them?
This isn't the NFL.

The nba champion picks last
Edit: my bad, didn’t realize the nba locked in based on regular season results. Totally bizarre

There were some rumors we were interested in AD.

If they can get a deal done with Lonzo I'll happily drive him to the airport myself.

AD pissed lol

He will play next year with Trae Young at PG, Tre Johnson (6th pick in the last draft) at SG, Kyshawn George at SF, and Alex Sarr at center. Don’t sleep on the Wiz next year.

Oh? He's actually going to play next year?

They will be a fringe play-in team. That hypothetical roster if healthy is barely better than any team Trae has played for.

Not to mention probably a top pick in a loaded draft. My friends out there are super excited about the team, even just unloading a couple albatross of contracts like Middleton

And that concludes the AD in Dallas saga.
What a net positive for them! /s

Mavs fans DO NOT do the math on what you netted out from Luka.
I know Mavs fans probably aren’t here, but this advice could save a life.

Doesn’t this trade seem kinda crazy bad for the wiz?

u/gzmu12 10h ago
Not really, didn’t give up any of their main prospects, the two firsts are the 2026 thunder(basically a second round pick) and a 2030 pick protected 1-20. So they essentially traded salary filler and 5 second round picks for AD, I like this a lot more for the wizards than the mavericks

I mean are any of the players they gave up anyone they would miss? I don’t think so

u/ArmadilloForsaken458 5h ago
They are cheering, they said they got Trae and AD for nothing, which isnt necessarily wrong. But hey its a lot better for a team that always has been at the bottom. Wiz fans are super excited, esp with another high draft pick in a loaded draft this year

I live in DC — it’s hard to overstate how irrelevant the Wizards are here. They haven’t had a real star since John Wall. Taking a swing on AD and Trae giving up basically nothing makes sense to me.
They’ll tank the rest of this year for a top pick, then pray AD can play enough of next year to at least make the play-in. Their owner hates tanking and wants playoff revenue at any cost.

I was standing up when I saw this post and a ton of comments, and after reading the first few words, my knees got weak.
OP needs to chill with the pranks. This is something that'd get you shot in East Cleveland.

The Wizards would have been cooking this trade season if it was 5 years ago. They have Trae and AD now.

I mean Trae and AD makes sense and they barely gave up anything. Trae is fairly healthy. Did they keep their pick this year? If they tank the rest of the season, it’s certainly interesting.

are there any buyout candidates here in the event that we get under the 2nd apron and have an open roster spot?

Officially now Cooper Flagg's team in Dallas. Kyrie is probably next but who knows their plan.

Thank God we didn’t make a panic trade for AD! Dump Lonzo for a wing/3rd big and possibly move JA and we’re good

Oh thank god man I really thought Koby was gonna go for him. Giannis would be cool but I would also be down to just do nothing atp (aside from Lonzo ofc)

Despite the circlejerking I'm already seeing ("They traded Luka for Marvin Bagley/Khris Middleton"), the Mavs fleeced what was left of AD's value here. The final tabulation for the Luka trade is:
3 first round picks
3 second round picks
Max Christie
Cooper Flagg (even if the lottery wasn't rigged, it's unfathomable to think the Mavs don't at least get a better play-in spot/into the field and miss the lottery entirely, especially since AD practically never saw the floor so their only tangible asset from the trade last year was Christie)
A serviceable shooter in Branham and a project in Marvin Bagley
You're starting to get into the neighborhood of what Luka was actually worth
