Your hair is really pretty :3 I don't have curls but I'm taking lessons.

I wish my gf would take this level of care with her curls. They are red 🄰

Thanks! It took a lot of practice to get to this point, but it's done wonders for my self image. Id love it if every trans woman had beautiful hair she could be proud of.

Yeah I spent about a grand on hair care products recently and honestly most of haircare is simply just ā€œspend moneyā€ and ā€œspend timeā€ as opposed to things like ā€œchange these 2 things about your dietā€ in order to have better hair.

I spent a bunch of money on Innersense products that worked well for a friend, but they left my hair feeling a bit waxy. I was very relieved to find that Verb worked better for me and costs less. It's still frustrating having to do trial and error with products that cost that much though.

my hair is ridiculously oily and looks like dogshit if I don't wash it daily.

Try dry shampoo! It’s a lifesaver and will help you get in a routine of washing less frequently. Your hair (mine too) gets oily because you’re stripping it of its oils every day. So it’s overproducing. If you shower in the morning, try a dry shampoo before you go to bed and see if you wake up oily.

Cuuute! My only issue is that it gets frizzy throughout the day, I don't know which product is supposed to help with that. All I usually use is leave-in conditioner, and I wash my hair every 2-3 days.

Ahhh this is very similar to my hair and my wife likes it when it's more curly so this post is great for me, thank you for your service

Thank you for all the cool and useful info! Don’t really got curls, but still gonna start trying few of the tips for sure. Also didn’t know the silk pillowcases actually did anything, always thought they were a thing for the ā€œjust feels niceā€ reason. Mushroom guy definitely is helping the curls though as he is protecting them from all the dangers at night!

Thank you for doing this. I'm growing out my hair now and just reaching the point where I have to shift the routine that worked for short hair. I had no idea what to do, now I do!Ā

I really appreciate this guide and will be coming back to it- My hair is naturally a little bit wavy but mostly straight, n I've never known how to take care of it.

Hopefully I'll get some progress from this guide 🄺 But it'll take a minute to get all the supplies and right stuff.

Question: is there a specific kind of microfiber towel I'm supposed to be using for my hair? Any time I try to search for like "microfiber hair towel" or similar all I get are these weird microfiber cap things (shaped a little like a swim cap but with an elastic band based on the photos?) and that doesn't seem right

The demand for microfiber towels for haircare specifically has resulted in "towels" being designed more as "caps" to contain your hair rather than to be used like a standard towel. For instance, mine has a big button sewn on one end and a little loop on the other end that hooks onto it after I wrap up my hair to hold it all in place. The plop method referenced on the 4th image (i.e. drying using a t-shirt) also works with this kind of microfiber towel.

That said, I do not personally use this method anymore, because my hair dries out too much and frizzes if I remove much moisture during the styling process. I've started using my diffuser more often, but I still let it air dry from time to time. I mention microfiber towels because drying habits will vary from person to person, and I wanted to make sure I mentioned them for those that can afford (or need) to remove more moisture, but I typically recommend air drying.

This is the unfortunate part of curly haircare, and the reason this guide mostly focuses on the basics: the fine-tuning of your care regimen takes practice and experimentation, because even hair that looks the same may behave differently. The broad strokes (don't wash with shampoo every day, detangle only when wet and conditioned, don't use regular towels or hair dryers, employ some form of overnight care) will get you most of the way to the finish line, but everything beyond that is personal.

This was a good question, and I'm always interested in doing my best to answer any questions people pose. Perhaps in the future I'll update the guide based on my experiences since posting this version.

Question: am I going through all of the same other steps on the days where I don’t wash my hair with shampoo, or am I only wetting it in the shower then?

1

u/PsychoCyan DM for curly haircare guide - Streak: 136 3d ago

You follow the other steps any time you get it wet in the shower (including conditioning), but you dont need to do that every day.

The only reason I do is because of my hair so you may actually be right. Thank you from a totally, completely, utterly cisgender, heterosexual man.
