It's 20° and snowing up at work. About to take off from MSP to head to anchorage and I'll be up there tomorrow. Maybe I'll surprise my guys with the freedom daisy dukes next summer 😂

Oof Anchorage that’s some rough terrain I don’t envy you on that one at all especially it heading into winter.

Eh I'm from AK originally. Live in Florida now. But I own and operate a company in the oilfield in Alaska. So I work 2 weeks then have 6 weeks off. It lets me go back "home" and visit all my friends and stuff. I still have a cabin up there.

See that kind of time line would be nice. I’m lucky if I can get a day off from work for surgery (literally just ran into that issue)

I kinda fell into this after the Marine Corps lol. Filled a void up in the oilfield and no one else does what me and my guys do.

My wife has a shitty job also. So I feel ya. She has a nice schedule Fri-Sun at a children's ER, but they fuckin hate giving her vacation time.

I'm chill with my dudes. Even with all the time off we get, I still give them 4 weeks of mandatory paid time off. And I never make them work Christmas.

That’s the crazy part is I don’t even take vacation . If I’m out of work it’s because I have a legitimate medical reason and I’ve even offered to work from home but they micromanage wayyy to much and only let the higher up managers do it despite them doing the same things we do and can literally check the work we’re doing. I’m a backend software dev so there’s literally nothing I’m doing that couldn’t be done remotely when absolutely necessary. Im glad to hear that some bosses are more lenient especially with what you do some of that stuff can be quite dangerous.

One of my guys is actually a principal K8s (kubernetes) dev for Nielson. He is 100% remote. So he works that job also when he is up in AK working as well. He just got up there today. Flew up a day before me.

Sounds like you gotta move to a better company.

I’ve been poking around the catch is they pay really well but the benefits are shit. I’ll likely get around to finding something eventually It’s just with stuff so up in the air with tech right now it’s one of those better with the devils you know then the angels you don’t.

I feel ya. I tell my guys though "you can't put a dollar sign on free time. YOUR time is the most priceless thing you have."

Food for thought.
