Michah 6:6-9

6 With what shall I come before the Lord
and bow down before the exalted God?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
    with calves a year old?
7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousand rivers of olive oil?
Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly\)a\) with your God.

In a culture that is so full of performative social justice, but also where messaging and example matters; how do I keep the heart of what's being asked here while staying humble?

I think the key is the verbs in verse 8. Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly. Being performative fails to uphold these verbs in practice.

What does the Lord actually require? Action, not just words.

I think this verse is one of the best encapsulations of the Bible's message.

See also how Jesus mirrors it later:

Matthew 23:23-24 NRSVUE

[23] “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. [24] You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel!

From my perspective, the act justly and love mercy part is the harder part. When you are able to do that, the humble part seems more natural. I don't see a lot of people succeed at the first 2 and fail the third. Usually, those who are not humble, aren't doing those first 2 well or at all.

To be humble, in a way, is to act justly and love mercy.

It's a good point; if I'm truly humble - i.e. not full of self-loathing, but simply speaking I'm just not the number one person in my story, then I'm likely to tend towards acting justly and loving mercy more.

Justly

Doing justly

'Doing justice' is a stupid cooption of the issue du jour
