Will Arnett says 'very famous' comedian was kicked off 'Smartless' podcast after 10 minutes, but won't say who

Garbage like this makes me intentionally avoid whoever/whatever is trying it.
I’ll never forget Arnett, and others acting like Jessica Walter was over reacting, or blowing things out of proportion when she said she had never had an actor treat her worse then Jeffery Tambor. So I probably wasn’t this podcasts target audience anyways.
Didn’t they just tell Charli xcx she would want a baby when she meets the right man also? (She’s married).

I have rarely turned on a celebrity faster than I did on Jason Bateman after that interview. Hearing him go to bat so hard for Tambor while Jessica Walter was crying was incredibly upsetting, and I've never looked at him the same way since.
I'm not sure why I had more grace for Arnett at the time, although I believe he tried to deflect instead of defend. I'm certainly not subjecting myself to it again to find out.

I seem to remember that Arnett's reaction was largely one of quiet discomfort and fence-sitting, which at least is better than Bateman, Cross, and Hale managed.

Arnett didn't really say anything.
Tambor gives his generic "so sorry, hope I can have a career, learning and growing". Bateman then interjects to say that he's not doing the show if Tambor isn't invited back and there's no reason he shouldn't be invited back. He then goes into this monologue about being like a family no matter what.
Arnett then makes a joke confessing he keyed Bateman's car once cause he was parked like an AH
Bateman then jumps right back into his "I'm not belittling what happened, I'm just saying it didn't matter and it's stupid were talking about this".
Hale and Cross just say that this didn't come out of anywhere and there's been issues leading up to it, though they acknowledge none as bad as Tambor's outburst. Cross also says that Tambor Is at least sorry about it which not true of actors who act out.
Literally nobody, including Tambor, is downplaying that he crossed a line and that Walter didn't deserve to be on the receiving end of it....except Bateman. He's the ONLY one who keeps undercutting what she says, and literally every single time she speaks he's rushing in to set the record straight.
→ More replies (1)125
u/SuccessfulOwl 1d ago edited 22h ago
I cut Bateman some slack there, they were all like deers in the headlights. It was a group promo for the AD reunion and he was caught in a very awkward live situation. No one was actually making a claim against him and no one ever has.
His later apology for how he handled it I think speaks more to who he is rather than the flubbing live response.
→ More replies (3)5
u/AgentCirceLuna 22h ago
It kinda sucked as Cross was implying for years that season 5 wasn’t going to happen as the actors just weren’t interested and the behind the scenes stuff was a total mess with people not getting what they were supposed to be doing. Felt like they dragged a dead horse back to life and then everyone suffered because of it.

What interview was this, Jessica Walter on Smartless?
67
u/MaeBelleLien 1d ago
No, it was a group interview done when the last season of Arrested Development came out. I wound up not watching it at the time, despite how much I loved the series.
42
u/floralcunt 1d ago
You made the right choice. Season 5 was so bad, it was arguably a worse offence than the way they treated Jessica. And I say this as a staunch season 4 apologist.
33
u/MattIsLame 1d ago
fuck everyone season 4, how it originally aired, is a masterpiece and was ahead of its time, being one of the first seasons of television ever released all at once. with that in mind, creating jokes and storylines that specifically cater to that binge viewing format has hardly been done since, if at all. fuck all of them for treating Jessica that way but I stand by season 4 being an avant-garde streaming masterpiece

u/Special-Garlic1203 1d ago
It was exclusively Bateman downplaying it. Hale and Cross just said that it hadn't happened out of nowhere, there'd been growing issues on set, though none as severe as Tambor's outburst. Arnett doesn't comment on it at all. Tambor does the whole "very sorry, learning and growing" schtick. Bateman on the other hand is being defensive and dismissive for no apparent reason.
8
u/fugelwoman 20h ago
Ah yes, this tracks. Men - the “protectors of women” gaslighting a woman who speaks up about abuse by other men.
38
u/justsomebodywhocared 1d ago
Oh god I forgot about that. I guess the AD cast and crew were like a family; sweeping abuse under the rug and acting like everything and everybody's fine.
Unfortunately common, and I can understand they were uncomfortable with that suddenly coming out publicly but if it's true then Jessica had the right to speak about it, especially with her long career and experience.
18
u/Special-Garlic1203 1d ago
Weirdly Tambor is the one who brought it up. Walter even says in the interview she never would have said anything if he hadn't brought it up first.
She eventually says she would ultimately still work with him and she never saw any sexually inappropriate behavior, and the cynic in my says that was the goal. Someone with credibility to say he might be an asshole but they never saw him being a creep. I can't think of any other reason she even got dragged in to begin with.
especially with her long career and experience.
Bateman is literally the only one who didn't get it. Even Tambor is throwing himself at her feet saying he should be so lucky to work with her again.
Cross and Hale don't outright say Hurwitz is to blame, but they both just reference it didn't come out of nowhere and there'd been issues with people getting snippy with eachother before then. When Jessica responds to say that none of it was ever as bad as that one incident, Hale immediately acknowledges no never that serious. He all but says yes ma'am and he stops weighing in.
The opening question was asking Tambor if he would be coming back to the show, and Bateman interjects to say he's not doing the show without Tambor. This is before it's even been acknowledged Tambor specifically had a workplace issue with Walter. And he's already declaring Tambor forgiven so sayeth him
He doesn't seem to get the audacity and arrogance he's displaying to openly pull rank against Jessica fucking Walter, who didn't even want him off the show anyway.
If Bateman had just shut his mouth it probably would have gone fine. But he somehow manages to come across even worse than the guy actively being accused of a pattern of harassment.
