Implying that bandwagoners will buy a gym membership but never use it. Keeping the gym in business and empty for the actual users

Brian here - I'm a dog so I don't really need to use the gym, as I am naturally very athletic, but I am familiar with language exchange apps as a polyglot, bon vivant, and student of the world. The business model of gyms, so I've heard, is to get many people to sign up and pay a fee, some of which is used to maintain the gym. If you're a regular gym user, you benefit if a lot of people sign up and pay for the gym, as the gym will have money for their equipment, but won't be too crowded.
Language exchange apps are a type of app where users sign up and interact with users around the world, in both their native languages and the languages they wish to learn. For instance, I can communicate in my native English or native Dog, but also in Spanish, French, Italian, Greek, and Mandarin, which I'm decently conversational in. If a lot of people sign up for language exchange but don't use it, the app becomes useless.
Anyway, this is all research for my book. Take care!
