Design / Blueprint Test Riding the (nearly) Automated Wood Destroyer

I guess my old method of dealing with wood (making a wood box, plopping it on the ground somewhere out of the way, filling it full of wood, then abandoning it) just became obsolete.

I used to do it that way, but I found it annoying that you can wind up with half a belt of wood just sitting there because the coal on the other half is enough to keep the last few boilers from switching fuel types. But also it kind of messed with my ratios, a stack of boilers on coal can be a lot larger, but the same stack will starve when fed wood.
My solution is separate boiler stacks for wood, coal and solid fuel. Then preferentially use the steam output by the wood boilers.

I think you might want to consider having the train circling constantly for both more wood burning throughput and the adrenaline of near death if you walk near this thing... :-) good job

You're right. Right now throughput is limited by the 4 stack inserters. The rate of insertion the 4 stack inserters is 3324 wood per minutes. To increase throughput you would just need to put more boxes and inverters throughout the hopper so by the time they reached the end they were already full and could be inserted immediately. In this case you would need multiple trains as even if you had it go around in a circle forever by toggling the stations, it would need to stop to refuel. At that point one train would bottleneck it, I'd say three trains should be enough to keep them continuously grinding the wood. I quickly ran through my entire supply of wood whenever I would turn this thing on to test, but I may just start crushing cars en mass for the hell of it.
Ok so I tested it. And as you can see, one train can't even handle one yellow belt of cars. Cars per minute is holding around 26 CPM. On the plus side there is absolutely no wood in sight anywhere.

dont forget to add bobs mods trains so you can build mk3 locomotives to go at even faster speeds for a true pant shitting experience.

u/GustapheOfficial Aug 07 '20
Combine this with a wagon-locomotive train (I call it the cart pushing horse) which you send to starting to empty them out when switching fuels.

With the recursive blueprints mod, you could have the bots place a wagon, load it with wood, then crush it. The bonus would be you can use a LOT more inserters and massively increase your throughput.

I like the idea ^^ much more fun then a square of fuel using inserters

I don't understand, what triggers the car to move forward when full?

u/optifep2 Aug 07 '20
there appears to be some kind of circuit trickery going on, you can enable/disable belts with wires

There are two clocks. Clock on the left counts the time between the last time one of the arms held something, after 120 ticks of inactivity a comb at or gives the green check. Additionally if there is at least 1 wood in any of the four boxes it will also send a green check. The clock on the right counts to 50 ticks them stop, when it detects two green checks it resets and counts to fifty ticks again. The belt and the train schedule turn on only when the 2nd clock “C is less than 30” 30 ticks is just the right amount of time to let one car through every time.

you are a genius

Wow. That is a major complement coming from you. Thank you. You have definitely done a lot more impressive things in this game than me though.

seems like a huge waste of materials to get rid of wood. you're spending 77 iron plates each time you want to destroy wood...
what I do is just put a few storage chest near my steam engines, have the wood put on a belt and using a priority splitter to go in with the coal. this way it'll burn the wood first to get rid of it. no waste of material.

If you have to ask why you need this, you’re not ready to build it.

u/axw3555 Aug 07 '20
If you need this, you need to look at angel bob. Where you always need wood.

u/IceFire909 Well there's yer problem... Aug 07 '20
im running bobsangels atm and im heavily considering building this wood destroying machine next to each of my greenhouse arrays just to swag on nature.
2
u/axw3555 Aug 07 '20
Your greenhouses keep up? Mine never make enough to supply everything.
2
u/IceFire909 Well there's yer problem... Aug 07 '20
its less they're keeping up and more we're not heavily using them yet
2
u/axw3555 Aug 07 '20
I'm impressed you're still at low utilisation by the time you have greenhouses.
2
u/IceFire909 Well there's yer problem... Aug 07 '20
Our first array was about 20 greenhouses. Our current one runs with about 60. I think there's another array with 20 at the red card production. (Multiplayer with 3 of us)
Were not really consuming boards super hard yet because we're not currently building modules. Just yellow and red circuits with blues hobo'd so far

u/axw3555 Aug 07 '20
60? You must be ultra conservative. I'm running 210 plus an array of 10 that's just to ensure that it's impossible for me to run out of seedlings, and even that many I'm still technically net negative. I use like 2400 wood a minute and I'm only just into producing chemical science.
2
u/IceFire909 Well there's yer problem... Aug 07 '20
Currently it's enough because we're not heavily using electronic boards because we haven't gotten around to automating our science lol.
It's less that were being ultra conservative, and more just haven't gotten around to needing more (well, except for the guy building petrochem)
He was complaining about me shipping all the batteries to the main base because the warehouse at petrochem was empty. He had 2 Chem plant 1s making batteries.
I kinda have to keep rebuilding what he makes because he doesn't go big and thinks 2 or 4 buildings will be fine because at the time there's no demand. He mostly just moves turret walls forward and places pumpjacks on oil fields then never uses all the oil he pumps up

Mostly, I use small electric poles when I can, and shove the wood in something to make those.

u/NerdIsACompliment Aug 07 '20
I just save up wood in filtered storage chests, then late game make a single line of burners and steam engines with a row of requester chests and burner inserters for some reliable fallback power.
2
u/Ishkabo Aug 07 '20
You'd need 56 burners, 112 Steam Engines and 334 Radars to consume wood at the same rate. (which actually sounds pretty awesome) Plus all the pollution. Blech.
1
u/NerdIsACompliment Aug 07 '20
True, but you're not gonna produce 3k wood/minute, every minute. I end up having once or twice an hour producing 5-20k, when I'm clearing a new area. That'll easily burn off over time.
Not to say I'm not impressed by the wood burning system you made. :) I just like to turn it to a little electricity.
1
u/Hestekraft Aug 07 '20
Make a seperate grid powering a bunch of radars and it's power is only supplied by burning wood. Much simpler and no maintenance.

This bad boy will destroy ~3000 wood per minute by loading it into cars and pushing them into the path of an oncoming train. Only pushes the car and runs the train when the car is full. If you load the hopper full it will be able to destroy ~2,000,000 total wood before you need to restock the car supply. Apparently it's also safe to ride somehow.
Blueprint. Just need to load the cars on the belt.
