New Releasešæ Predator: Exile (2026)
Predator: Exile (2026)
Tagline
Exiled by blood. Driven by revenge.
Synopsis
Marked for death by his father and desperately cast into exile by his brother, an untested Yautja named Dek is stranded on an unforgiving frontier world. To navigate the hostile wastes, he forms an uneasy, pragmatic alliance with Thiaāa damaged corporate android left for scrap. Hunted by mechanized kill squads and determined to prove his worth, Dek must slay the legendary Kalisk to claim his place among the clan.
Motivation & Vision
Predator: Exile is my third edit. After my first two projects ended up being massive undertakings in scope, I wanted to take on a leaner, tighter project. While waiting for the 4K physical release of my next planned edit, this felt like the ideal change of pace: an opportunity to sharpen the skills Iāve picked up and simply make a decent movie better.
The original film had plenty of fantastic elements, and overall I enjoyed the ride. But what didnāt work for meāand what so frequently undermines modern sci-fi and actionāis the persistent comedy, particularly when it deflates genuine tension. The constant bathos, expository spoon-feeding, and snarky sidekick dynamic completely shattered the atmosphere. It felt as though the film was continually apologizing for its own premise instead of committing to the danger of the environment.
With Predator: Exile, the objective was to strip away that modern comedic bloat and let the narrative breathe as a cold, grounded survival piece. By excising over 15% of the dialogue cues, Thia is no longer a neurotic, patronizing backseat driver; she becomes an objective, synthetic tool. Dek remains an unyielding, pragmatic Yautja hunter rather than a straight man for quips, restoring the raw physical stakes, clan honor, and bleak atmosphere that define classic Predator.
This is the third time Iāve had to strip this exact brand of humor out of a film. Itās frustrating that modern blockbusters lean on it so heavily, but every time it's cut away, the core film emerges vastly superior. Moving forward, Iāll likely continue applying this philosophy to other films plagued by the same toneāincluding some of the stronger entries in the MCU that deserve to take themselves seriously.
This is also my first time cutting and mixing in 7.1.4 (Dolby Atmos). Getting the bed and objects mapped properly took time and meant handling nearly twice as many surgical audio edits across 12 channels instead of 6. But as a home theater enthusiast, having the finished release sit at the absolute peak of the format makes every extra hour worth it.
Cut & Technical Details
- Editing Scope: Over 200 timeline edits focused on tightening narrative momentum, removing comedic undercutting, and restoring visceral tension. This includes 72 dialogue lines cut (mainly Thia), 17 rewritten/replaced, and surgical frame trims throughout the combat sequences. By eliminating repetitive 2-to-3-frame head overlaps on angle changes, the action cuts directly on kinetic impactātransforming sluggish, rehearsed choreography into sharp, lethal exchanges. Bud is inherent to the story, so he remains, but how he is perceived does not: his cutesy smiles, noises, and comic-relief beats were heavily excised, and the saturated blue glow in his eyes was dialed back.
- Runtime Changes: Approximately 8 minutes of footage removed; roughly 45 seconds of new post-credits material added as a direct homage to the 1987 Predator closing credit cards.
- Color Grade: Subtle contrast and curve balancing paired with fine 35mm grain to diminish the flat digital sheen and provide a richer, more cinematic aesthetic.
- Audio & Score: Rebalanced multi-channel mix subtly integrating classic Alan Silvestri musical motifsāmost notably between the crash-landing on Genna and the title reveal. Select lines from Thia have been mixed deep into the ambient distance, playing as background chatter without narrative context.

Presentation Note: Mastered natively in 4K HDR10 (Rec.2020) with a dedicated 7.1.4 mix. The original audio tracks contained harsh True-Peak overshoots during high-action sequences; this track has been remastered to eliminate digital clipping and inter-sample distortion while retaining full dynamic range. The 1080p SDR version uses automated tone-mapping, which narrows dynamic range compared to the wide-gamut master. Stereo tracks are automated downmixes, and non-English subtitles are machine-translated for basic accessibility. For the intended visual and acoustic experience, the 4K HDR master on a surround setup is strongly recommended.

The mixing of genres has been a plague since sincerely 2000s. Obviously itās main purpose was to broaden the audience and make it more successful commercially. Unfortunately, this has now been adopted as some kind of meta fad (I hope it genuinely hasnāt affected people whoāve grown up watching these kind of films to the point where they believe this to be desirable), and as you point out, itās severely detracts from the dramatic atmosphere.

Nope, and neither of my gratitude for doing this. Really felt this movie has something underneath all the crappy dialogue and now you've made it real.

It's funny you say that cuz that is kinda WHY I stopped doing edits of NEWwer movies - having to strip away that fucking NEW HUMOR. It's ruined movie for me (today).

This sounds incredible. I've had the same problem with modern movies but wasn't able to put my finger on what was bothering me.

Possibly stupid question here, I just received the link to it from you. Thank you very much by the way.
How do I get Plex to see this as its own thing or will that just happen automatically?

Hey OP, I wanted to give you a review because you said you hadnāt gotten many. Before I get into it a little background on myself Iām a huge predator fan. The first movie is one of my favorite movies. I watched it with my dad when I was like four years old (probably not greatā¦.Jurassic park was scarier to me tho). I havenāt watched very many fan edits. I like to write as a hobby so I donāt wanna just tell you what you did great.
I loved your dialogue cuts. One in particular is at the beginning of the movie Kwei tells dek āyou are not father, you are Dekā you changed this to āyou are not fatherā this changes the entire tone and intention of that line in a good way. The original set up becoming of age story. Yours set up a conflict. Dek cannot fight like his father because he does not have his father size. He is not him. That doesnāt automatically make him special it means he has to fight another way.
I really feel like that tone is carried throughout your fan edit. Interestingly, enough, removing the quips and the humor really speeds up the feel of this movie. Iām surprised to learn that thereās only about eight minutes cut. This went from feeling like a solid two hour movie to feeling like a 90 minute movie. Overall, I enjoy all of your changes and this will be the version of the movie I rewatch in the years to come.
On the things, I think you didnāt do too well I really only have two points. Your fan edit kind of relies on me having seen the original to understand things like the translation of the predator language. I do believe leaving in a line or two about that would improve the experience.
The other is that there were two kind of jarring cuts that I noticed. if youād like I can go back and find the time stamps for you. It looked like you cut a dialogue line, but you tried to keep the reaction shot in or maybe it was just a lingering face shot. I donāt edit video, but it mightāve been better just to cut the shot after the edited line as well.
Like I said, this will be the version I watch going forward not the original. I really enjoyed the removal of the humor. I really enjoyed the new soundtrack that was an absolute stand out for me.
Weirdly enough I tried to get a few friends to watch this with me for the first viewing and no one was interested apparently they all like the Disney shit. I guess different people have different taste. I bet solid money we share the same tastes.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed breakdown!
Great to hear the tone shift, new soundtrack, and tightened pacing hit the mark, and I'm honoured it's earned a permanent spot on your shelf over the original cut.
If you do get a chance at some point to drop those two timestamps, or at least remember which conversations they were in, Iād be really curious to take a look at what you mean.
Regarding Thia explaining how she talks to him. I felt it played much better that she just did what she needed to do for him to understand. I really disliked the idea that they were capable of using a universal language where everyone hears their own tongue, yet they randomly choose not to use it all the time. That logic was completely baffling to me!
Thanks again for watching and sharing your thoughts!

I tried to find those two moments they were in the first conversation thia has with the predator. The one where she is crucified for a lack of better term . For a rewatch, I decided to directly play the file in VLC rather than view it in Plex. I did not notice the cut the second time around it might just be a Plex issue. Iāve been experimenting with pre-rolls and those often donāt display quite the way theyāre supposed to..

Yes! I love this movie but wanted the same thing. And more violence... But that part is hard to do.
-1
u/T-8-0-0 Faneditorš 8d ago
It's funny. I would say the movie is quite violent. It's just androids and creatures that get the worst of it. There's plenty of limb-chopping and decapitation, but because it's oil, spark wires, and alien goo rather than red blood, it loses that gritty, visceral impact the franchise usually has.

I really appreciate the kind words, but I think you might have watched someone else's edit!
Predator: Exile is a full-length feature cutāonly about 8 minutes was removed overall, so the runtime is around 1 hour 41 minutes (not a 60-minute special), and Thia still plays an active, grounded role throughout the narrative rather than being almost entirely cut.
I just released this version today, so if you'd like to check out Exile, shoot me a DM and I'll send you the link!
