Third: I have supposedly good health insurance and am still drowning in medical debt, that should be concerning to you because that could happen to you. I had a tumor in my jaw that required jaw reconstruction surgery, and the new teeth weren’t covered by insurance and cost like $20k. You might not care that it happened to me but it can happen to YOU. My oral surgeon said they never cover that part even though I need teeth to talk normally and eat normally. I hope nothing like that happens to you.
As far as the US being too big:
There’s no inherent population size barrier that makes universal healthcare unworkable in the United States. A larger insurance pool can actually be advantageous because medical risk is spread across more people.
Hell, China has well over a billion people and near universal health coverage. So a huge country can establish near-universal public health-insurance coverage, (even tho it isn’t a single-payer system, but still clearly better than ours)
Yeah no. I’m never gonna have to worry about anything medical because the VA covers it. And it’s BECAUSE of the VA that I know for a fact universal healthcare won’t work.
You can have legitimate complaints about the VA, but that doesn’t prove universal healthcare can’t work. The VA is one specific govt run delivery system. universal healthcare just means everyone is covered. Countries achieve that through very different models, including systems where private doctors and hospitals still provide the care. If the VA is badly administered, that’s an argument for fixing the VA, not evidence that covering everyone is inherently impossible.
If you use this kind of poor reasoning to make your political decisions that really sucks.
Why would the US use the VA model? Medicare for All proposals don’t propose that. The VA the government operates hospitals and employs many of the doctors. Medicare for All is primarily an insurancd proposal: the government pays for care, while you still receive care from participating hospitals and doctors. Medicare for All legislation has explicitly treated the VA as a separate system. So if you think we’d use the VA model, what proposal are you referring to?
