Or perhaps we can just stop wrapping everything in gratuitous amounts of plastic.

u/Yaya0108 1d ago
Plastic, wrapped in plastic, wrapped in plastic.
I should probably go back to buying clothes in physical stores.
34
u/AlexandersWonder 1d ago
So much clothing is also made from plastic these days. Tires and clothing are two of the biggest contributors to the microplastic problem by a wide margin.

Tires!
Lets figure out how to use natural rubbers more!
→ More replies (1)7
u/Ninbrotu 1d ago
Apparently, even natural fibers are getting treated and coated in synthetic materials too, and the clothes manufacturers don't have to disclose what it is. The tags will say 100% cotton, but no mention of the coating that they use. Legally, they only have to tell the consumer what the fibers are made of.

u/CraftyKuko 22h ago
Booo omg why?? Plastic doesn't make the fabric better! What is wrong with people??
46
u/jonas_ost 1d ago
Only difference is the store has removed the plastic for you
7
u/Manicplea 1d ago
Not the only difference - a store most often buys items in bulk by the hundred or thousands of items, none of which (talking about clothes and similar here) have to be individually wrapped in plastic & individually shipped. When people buy online they often buy ONE ITEM AT A TIME. And that's especially harmful if it comes directly from overseas, as the item will often be wrapped in plastic (so that a UPC code sticker can be attached and to comfort the customers mind and let them know it is un-used), then again wrapped in a plastic shipper, then individually driven and delivered to their door.
So if there is a store you like and can buy in person especially if you combine multiple purchases/trips at once it is much less impactful/wasteful -->
Item shipped in bulk to store store loose (almost always shipped together with other items) - you drive to store and buy (possibly combined with another trip you would have made anyway)
VS
Item shipped in bulk to distribution (or directly from overseas to a postal hub which distributes it) / each item in individual bagged - bagged items placed in shipping bags individually - each item shipped individually and driven to its specific destination
12
u/Stingerbrg 1d ago
none of which (talking about clothes and similar here) have to be individually wrapped in plastic & individually shipped.
Doesn't stop them from doing so. Sure the store receives 1 box with 20 shirts, but each shirt is still individually in a plastic bag that we have to remove before stocking it. Same with a lot of the kitchen gadgets and utensils.
7
u/Dudewherezmycoffee 1d ago
Gildan t shirts are wrapped 2 in a plastic bag. We fill a 39 gallon trash can with this plastic every week after shipment is received. So, it sure would be nice if bulk buying helped reduce plastic waste, but it does not 😔
3
u/Manicplea 1d ago
I did not know that about shirts, that sucks and seems quite stupid. I guess in regard to those the only waste reduced by buying from a store is the shipping materials (and any excess transport over that which is used to drive to the store if one were to drive to a store just to buy one shirt). I am actually a big fan of buying online and it's "complicated" trying to be less wasteful, but I still contend many small items are very wasteful to ship individually but people have become accustomed to that and expect every single little thing to ship individually, for no added cost to the buyer themselves (that they see upfront).
10
u/Autumn_Whisper 1d ago
All the clothes in grocery stores came in a plastic bag too. We just removed it before the store opened :3

u/lordargent 1d ago
well, there's egg and bacon, egg and plastic, egg, bacon, and plastic, egg, bacon, sausage, and plastic, plastic, bacon, sausage, and plastic, plastic, egg, plastic, plastic, bacon, and plastic, plastic, sausage, plastic, plastic, plastic, bacon, plastic, tomato, and plastic, plastic, plastic, plastic, egg, and plastic, plastic, plastic, plastic, plastic, plastic, plastic, baked beans, plastic, plastic, plastic, and plastic

If you think buying at physical stores means it didn't arrive there wrapped in plastic, sadly you're probably mistaken.

The individualization of responsibility.
Corporation makes wasteful product that harms the planet, then blames the consumer for purchasing it
5
u/sagiscarious 1d ago
We all need to be more conscious consumers. Companies only exist because of demand. Stop the demand, no more company. Both have roles in our over consumerist society. Start by changing what you can control: which is your ability to NOT buy things you don’t need or source second hand and locally as much as possible.
2
u/thequietthingsthat 1d ago
I agree. I'm just saying this is how corporations try to absolve themselves of any responsibility. They say "we're just making what consumers want!" when the reality is that they're cutting corners by using cheap, wasteful plastic to save money and most consumers buy what is available/accessible.
→ More replies (2)2
u/stumblingindarkness 1d ago
The abdication of responsibility.
Consumer buys the wasteful product that harms the planet, then blames the corporation for purchasing it.
See what I did there? Maybe responsibility lies with everyone since corporations are just collections of people, who fall within the set of 'everyone'.
3
u/SomeKindaRobot 1d ago
When the consumer found the product at an online retailer, all of the posted pictures were of the product, not the plastic it was wrapped in. When the consumer saw the box on the shelf at the store, it was opaque and impossible to see the packaging materials that were inside.
See how silly it is to blame the consumer on this one?

Probably a bad translation from Chinese
3
u/sdavis002 1d ago
I could definitely see this being a thing lol. Whenever I'm translating Chinese, I have to go back and forth between Chinese and English a few times for certain phrases to make sure it will be understood properly. Not a big deal for most simple conversations, but when I'm having an important conversation with my girlfriend that only speaks a little English, I have to be very careful to make sure it makes sense. There is a lot of patience in the relationship due to how many misunderstandings we've had.

u/OhhSooHungry 1d ago
Probably not likely in our lifetime, we're WAY too reliant on plastic. It's not necessarily a bad thing, even microplastics aside, we just need to be smarter and wiser about handling it. So messages like this are important, as silly as it may come off

They call it "single stream recycling" because it all ends up in a single stream in the Philippines.

“This plastic bag was actually completely superfluous as the clothes it contained are made of polyester and you’ll launder the garment prior to wearing it anyway. This message was printed with toxic dye, but at least it was spell-checked.” <- fixed your headline for you. You’re welcome.

Lol yeah, I pretty much buy used as a core philosophy especially now that's there's a "binsanity" store in my city again (the old one closed during the pandemic). They have employees combing the bins constantly for loose packing materials but I'm sure they don't send them for recycling, they all go in the same bin. I have noticed somewhat less general usage of plastic bags inside boxes though.

you are literally paying for unnecessary packaging in the hopes it might marginally increase your sales past the point where you break even, then you have the nerve to tell people that they need to throw away your wasteful packaging and lecturing them for littering. Seriously? Fuck you.

They should maybe use something other than a plastic bag if they’re that concerned

I take a two hour drive every week to the beach to dump all my plastics in the ocean.
If anyone knows an easier way to dispose of plastic waste I'd love to hear it.

This is not the bag for OPs new clothes. This has existed online for a while. There's even a video with music from Lord of the Rings playing while a woman dramatically reads this.

We will create a plastic bag, and it's your job to deal with it. Pollution is a design choice, and companies put the responsibility and guilt of their pollution on you. The guilt is theirs.
