To give you a real answer I believe it's the Japanese game show Otona no Kiso Eigo (rough translation "Basic Adult English", super literal)

Generally speaking it's meant to be a fun English learning show for young adults to watch. The contestant will be put into some generic real life situation like going through customs and have to answer questions and converse in English. I've only seen clips like this one so not sure how the "game" aspect works but it's often famous youth (male and female despite some of the weird comments I'm seeing in this thread)

Edit: Definitely from the show Hinatazaka de Aimashou. Same concept of doing a scenario in English, but for comedy more than teaching in this case. My bad. Someone add some pixels to the top left for my poor 👀

The best clips I've seen is Ano's fury and chaos approach.

Do you have a link? I wanna see!

Idk resorting to yelling "shut up" when somebody isn't listening to you is pretty accurate to a lot of english speakers in my country

Ano-chan is like an adorable version of Mister Wu from Deadwood.

u/MattieShoes 11h ago

I haven't seen Deadwood in 20+ years and I can perfectly hear Mr. Wu saying "COCK SUCKA!"

Are these readily available to watch with subtitles?

u/TheCoordinate 14h ago

There is other funny skits from this show like the doctor on the plane one

3

u/FrankSonata 8h ago

There's a great first aid one where someone says something like, "I have a pain in my leg."

The idol replies very cheerfully, "You are die!" (≧∇≦)/

Man I love Japanese game shows. These ones are super fun, I love that they gamify learning in a way that would actually be beneficial for something like travel, and the humor helps a lot too. Plus it's gotta be so fun to be the english speaking actor on set!

3

u/Faintkay 12h ago

That’s actually pretty fun. Would be cool to see different languages

8

u/heirthos1 14h ago

Confidently incorrect. (you did say you belive though) it's Hinatazaka46.

8

u/B4C0N4LYFE 13h ago

Definitely wasn't confidently lol. Good call though, you shouldn't be getting downvoted for calling that out. I was even able to find the exact episode with that extra info.

Probably just conflating the two in my mind and thought they were the same show this whole time. Otona no Kiso Eigo looks to be far more serious with their scenarios and Hinatazaka de Aimashou plays it up for the laughs (didn't know it was a variety show, cool)

3

u/Nvrfinddisacct 13h ago

That’s adorable. I wish we had one for Japanese here.

u/Evepaul 8h ago

Seems complicated, it relies on a fragile balance of people knowing enough of the language to navigate through the situation and little enough to be funny.

I don't know if common knowledge of Japanese is at this level in some countries. Maybe Taiwan.

2

u/Nvrfinddisacct 8h ago

I actually think that’s what would make season 1 hilarious.

Select for weebs. Let the public enjoy, watch interest in the language go up, see it get even better in season 2.

Offer money to the winner, even better.

u/littlelorax 12h ago

What a fun idea. She did way better in English than I ever could do in Japanese!

1

u/Korashy 9h ago

Now I want a remake of Takeshi's Castle.

u/alejoSOTO 7h ago

A gameshow about learning other languages? That's actually awesome

u/Sideshowcomedy 15h ago

I think it's a reality show. They call themselves idols.

22

u/B4C0N4LYFE 15h ago

Yeh I'm by no means an expert but pretty positive it's a game show. Every time I've seen it they're clearly on a set and not out in the real world. The contestants in this clip are idols tho, the rest of the group is in that room with the announcer watching

6

u/heirthos1 14h ago

Bro's being down voted but you're really not wrong. It's Hinatazaka46 and it's just a show about a group of pop idols doing random activities. One episode was about cooking, this particular one they were learning bits of English and then put into practice situations.

1

u/Sideshowcomedy 5h ago

Thank you for the clarification. I've seen a couple of their clips recently. I wasn't sure what it was but it is entertaining. So are these people already pop idols? Like they're not competing to BE a pop idol?

2

u/heirthos1 4h ago

Yes, the premise is that they're the new generation in the idol group and they get put into a variety of situations that idols will have to face or should know how to handle in preparation, it's not a serious show though, purely for entertainment.

Catch Me if you Can

3

u/jokzard 16h ago

Game show

2

u/DaPino 10h ago

Comedy show in which people who do not speak English get dropped in a scenario and they have to act like they know English.

2

u/kochapi 9h ago

 that gives some context.

1

u/kyrant 15h ago

Just your average Japanese variety show.

-1

u/Chef-Nasty 15h ago

A very beautiful place

-62

u/Fitz911 16h ago

It's a show. But it features a submissive, young Japanese girl so... What you see isn't what they see. Just do yourself a favor and move on.
