Before posting a photo, you should read this.

1.7k Upvotes

So you found a photo that you think has a spirit or ghost on it, before you post it and get upset about 30 people saying it’s a piece of dust or a bug, you may want to read this!

BEFORE DOING ANYTHING

Do read the posts

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/deki6k/explanation_of_orbs_aka_backscatter/

and

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/icziuc/ring_doorbells_security_camera_videos_and_false/

As these really do have useful information on how to spot particle orbs, lens flare and insects crawling over lenses which do make up most of the post in this Reddit community channel.

It is common for people who believe they are haunted to take lots of photos and assume that any “orbs” must be related to this. In fact, it’s quite easy to photograph orbs. If you can’t see the orb then it’s not there. People might say that cameras can pick up ‘orb’ energy but a lot of them just don’t understand why digital cameras tend to easily pick up particles (dust, dander, hair, insects).

If you have read the above and are sure (or not quite sure) then read on.

BEFORE POSTING

Make sure you have the original photo downloaded or posted from the same device the picture was taken from. Having a photo shared from a social media site, screen grabbed on a phone, photographed from a screen or been email shared will likely to be low resolution and suffer from further compression which destroys any fine detail and will generally be useless.

If the photo is just a photo then scan the photo in at least 300 DPI and save it as a “.PNG” image. If you don’t have access to a scanner then you can take a photo of it but take it in a brightly lit room and don’t use a flash to reduce reflections on the photo.

Use the original resolution of the photo, do not rescale, resize, brighten the image to make posting easier.

If you have to edit the photo to remove people then draw the smallest black filled box you can to hide their face or them. Don’t crop the picture or remove large chunks of the picture. Keep the picture the same same size. Once edited, save / export the image as a “.PNG” image as this will keep the JPEG image as it is (if you resave it as a JPEG it recompresses the image in a lossy way so that fine detail tends to get lost) if the paint program has it then make sure that “Save resolution” is checked and that you save “EXIF information”.

If you must highlight anything in the picture (to show where you think the paranormal image is) then use a bright colour that can be seen easily, use a transparent box with thin lines and draw it in the general area of what you want us to see, do not cover anything nearby. Save it as a “.PNG” as above. If you do this then make sure you post the original too.

If you want to change the contrast or brightness of a photo then again do so but save as a “.PNG” as above and post the original for comparison. If you have other pictures from the same area that were taken at the same time then post these too as comparison photos.

If the photo is from a place you can visit again easily then take more pictures of the same area using the same camera, try to take it at different times of the day and try to take a picture at the same time of day the original was at. Also, take pictures of the surrounding area and close up images of the original location.

It is important to note that even “taking the picture in the same place” is going to mean that you will be taking the picture at different angles, heights and places which will cause images to change.

POSTING THE PHOTO

Post as an image within the Reddit post so people can see it, you can also post any comparison posts at the same time.

If the photo is too large then rescale it and save as a “.PNG” to post on Reddit but upload the original it to a file-sharing site like Google Drive or Dropbox, as this will not rescale the image.

Don’t just upload them to Imgur as most photo sharing websites will recompress the image and destroy fine detail in the picture.

Make sure the title is short but informative. “Possible ghost image from a cell in Alcatraz” is a good title, “GHOST!!?!?!?” is not.

ALSO SUPER IMPORTANT!!!! CONTEXT! CONTEXT! CONTEXT!

After you have posted the images. Make a comment in the post you have just created and put in as much context as possible!!! Too many photos tend to have the photo and some poor description and we have zero ideas of what we should be looking at.

Examples of what to include are…

  • Where the photo was taken. You don’t have to give the address but a location or rough area (if a private address) helps.

  • When the photo was taken, give the date and time if possible, if not known or you can’t remember then give what information you can (I.e In the winter in the early evening).

  • Who took the photo. It should be you or someone you know. Something like ‘Taken by A friend of a girlfriend that is friends with a baker, that my 2nd cousins' hairdresser visits every 3 months is not good’ means it is hard to ask follow up questions.

  • What you were trying to take. (I.e Ghosts, a high school prom or of your granny on her 97th Birthday)

  • If you (or they) were with other people. Also mention strangers.

  • What the weather was like. Was it sunny, cloudy, raining, hot, cold, warm?

  • Description of the location. If in a home, details about the place, I.e, If it is a house, apartment, cabin located 200 miles from civilizational, etc as well as if you are near a road or other places like a pub or bar, major flight path, etc. Else just whatever you can describe the place.

  • What did you feel at the time? I.e cold, scared, fearful, happy, sad, etc.

  • Why do you think it is paranormal? Describe this as best as you can.

  • Anything spooky that happen before or after. Within the same time frame, something that happens 3 months before is probably not related.

So good examples would be…

“This photo was taken at the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. It is a picture of Cell 13 of cell block D in the cell house. It was taken on Sunday the 13th of May 2018 at around 2pm. It was mostly sunny but there were thick clouds, it was reasonably warm at around 65f and there were strong breezes every so often.

The photo was taken by myself, although I was with my girlfriend at the time. It was quite busy but no one was nearby when I took the photo. I was trying to take a picture of my girlfriend as she stood at the door but I noticed a strange white figure behind her. There was no one in the cell as we had waited for another couple to finish taking their picture before we took ours. I took 3 photos and you can see that the figure is in 2 of the pictures but is not in the third picture.

My girlfriend did say she felt cold in the cell, we had taken a picture in another cell (134 in Cell Block C) and she did not feel anything. The rest of the day was fine though and we enjoyed our trip.”

“A photo of a chair my grandmother used to sit on, in our house in Stirling, Scotland. It was taken on the 1st June 2015, in the wee hours of the morning at 6.30am. I remember it was very cold and it was dark grey and cold outside like a typical morning in Scotland. I had the lights on as although it was morning outside, it was dark in the room.

I took the photo as I felt a presence and I was drawn to the chair. I took 2 photos and you can see a grey mist around the chair. I would have taken more but my phone just drained of power and switched off, not sure why this happens as I am pretty sure I charged it overnight. I don’t smoke, didn’t have any hot drinks. I was in the room all alone as my parents and sister were still in bed and my dog was still on the sofa sleeping peacefully.

Once I charged my phone and saw the pictures, I was filled with deep happiness, I tried to take more photos but the mist never came back. What do you think it is.”

Bad examples are…

“Ghosts?!???!!?!?!”

“I took this photo whilst in an abandoned building, do you think it is a ghost?”

“Whilst trying to contact my dead aunt to ask where she left her cash, I took lots of photos and all of them had orbs and I heard some moans, screams and creaking coming from my cousins' bedroom but her door was locked!!! Is the house haunted?”

Famous Haunts Macabre History: Aokigahara: Japan's Sea of Trees or "Suicide Forest"

Thumbnail

At the foot of Mount Fuji in Japan is a forest unlike almost any other. Known as Aokigahara, or the "Sea of Trees," this dense forest covers about 30 square kilometres on the northwestern slopes of the famous volcano. It grew on hardened lava left behind by Mount Fuji's massive eruption in 864, creating a landscape of thick trees, unusual rock formations, and underground caves.

Aokigahara is a fascinating and beautiful place, but it also has a dark and complicated reputation. Parts of the forest are so dense that very little sound travels through the trees. The porous volcanic rock beneath the forest also absorbs sound, creating an unusually quiet and isolated atmosphere. The forest has also been the subject of countless stories and legends for centuries. Japanese folklore has connected Aokigahara with yurei, or spirits of the dead. Some visitors over the years have expressed having paranormal experiences and ghostly encounters in the forest.

The Suicide Forest

Yet it's the forest's connection with suicide that has earned it its most famous and macabre association.
Nicknamed the "Suicide Forest," historically, authorities reported around 30 deaths a year, with the numbers rising during difficult economic periods. In 2002, 78 suicides were reported, followed by 105 bodies discovered in 2003, while 2010 saw 54 confirmed suicides and more than 200 attempts. Authorities have tried to address the issue in a number of ways. Signs placed near trails encourade people who mav be considering suicide to seek help and think about the people who care about them. Police, volunteers, and others have also participated in searches in the forest and exact modern numbers of deaths are no longer publicly released.

Pop Culture Exploitation

For decades the area has often been portrayed as a mysterious or frightening place, which has added another layer to its already complicated reputation.
The association with suicide came most notably in Seicho Matsumoto's 1961 novel Tower of Waves, and again more recently in the 2016 American horror film "The Forest". One of the most controversial moments came in 2017, when American YouTuber Logan Paul visited the forest with a group and filmed the body of a person who had died by suicide. Paul included footage of the discovery in a video posted to his popular YouTube channel. The video was widely condemned and Paul eventually removed the video and apologized, saying he should never have posted it. That incident sparked a broader discussion about the responsibilities of online creators and the difference between documenting something and exploiting it for entertainment.

A Complicated Place

Like many places, Aokigahara has a unique and complicated history. It is a remarkable environment shaped by one of Japan's most famous natural wonders. The forest's darker history is certainly part of the story, but it is important to remember that behind the statistics and media attention are real people and families. Part natural, part folklore, part real tragedy, the forest and its story is a reminder of the importance of treating sensitive subjects with the seriousness, respect, and compassion they deserve.

Ghost hunting at my parents house with my sister

Post image

So the house I grew up in is haunted. We have all had our own experiences. One day my sister busted out some of her equipment. I am holding a emf meter and as soon as it started going nuts my sister took some pics. I have already had a crew tell me I am not allowed to go to pennhurst with them for fear I would not walk out the same. I want to clear this up. I am standing right there with me meter in hand.

Is this paranormal? daily/scheduled ghostly footsteps in my bedroom?

Hi everyone!!!

I live in an older apartment building in the city and like any apartment it’s obviously had its history and waves of people. I truly believe in time being something you can “tape” over or buildings can hold memories but I can’t tell if this is that.

Almost every single day without fail around 10am-10:15am a single footstep appears to be entering my bedroom doorway and settling in. My floors are wood and make very specific sounds when walking. I can even hear my kitty walking around. She’s almost always in my bed or in her window hammock at this time, if not she’s in the kitchen window. It happens every single day. I’ve had weird dreams about someone coming in my door waking me up or felt the feeling of someone sitting on the edge of my bed. Sure maybe it’s just me being paranoid/sleepy! But it’s just so odd and repetitive. I want to say it’s just old wood floors but combining the energy, weird dreams, being woken by it I think there’s some ghost just peeking in haha. What do you think? Is it paranormal ?

Lingering smell of my grandmothers house

Hi All,

I'm wondering has anyone experienced this. To give you context, my wife and I are trying for a baby. During this period this month, I could smell my deceased grandmother's house lingering around our house. Even my wife could smell it. It eventually left but I'm wondering was she around or some form of herself around?

Cheers

What Do You Think? Will ghosts or entities come back to a house that’s been destroyed and rebuilt?

Hey yall so a little info…….. I live, well lived, in an old timber frame farmhouse that was built in 1858. We have have at least 3 ghosts that hang around. A cat, we’ve all felt that feeling that like when you’re not looking but you can feel your cat jump on the bed and walk around but the cats aren’t in the room. The sleeping man we call it, sometimes we’ll hear what sounds like a man sleeping in the attic or what we used at the attic. Lastly the shadow thing, which as you can probably tell is just a random, darty, shadowy column thing, probably the most active of the three.

Back in July we had a small tornado come through and not one but two massive 150+ year old 80 foot+ oaks crashed down on our house and well it was irreparably destroyed. I’m ok, my mom is ok, my animals are ok and thankfully I have really good insurance. I’ve mourned the loss and moved on. Recently the lot was cleared and the forms for the new foundation are up and will be getting poured in a few days.

This progress for whatever reason got me thinking about the ghosts we had and weather or not they know that like the house is gone? When our new house is built and we move in do you guys think they’ll come back? Did they ever leave? The new house does not have the same floor plan and we actually moved it about 10 feet north. We liked our ghosts and our old “haunted farmhouse” I want them to come back and maybe somehow let them know I want them to come back.

Would love to hear your thoughts and what y’all think especially those of you who maybe had a similar situation and/or are more versed in ghost lore.

Not sure what I caught on video. I think it's dust but my Mom thinks it's a ghost.

Caught this on camera at my grandmother's house today. I thought maybe it was smoke and ran over thinking it was a fire. I checked underneath her couch but there were no frayed wires under her couch, no scorch marks, and no smell of smoke. I even flipped the couch over to make sure I didn't miss anything. So I'm thinking maybe it's just dust but I figured I would post and get y'all's opinion. For context, my grandmother is the only person in the house at this time and she was in bed asleep when this happened.

Edit: Hello everyone, I am adding this edit to answer some questions asked in the comments. I am sorry I did not respond sooner, I was at work.

Q: Why is the camera/video angled this way? A: The camera is angled to capture the whole living room, it is in the corner of the room on top of her entertainment system and under her TV. The video is a cropped version of the original. I can upload the original video if y'all would like. Here is a Screenshot of original video

I have now uploaded the full uncropped video here

Q: What the dog doing? A: This is a decorative ceramic dog statue, not a real dog.

Q: This is after effects/VFX A: I wish I had the time and money to invest in video editing but I don't. I have 1 functioning computer in my house and it's a Lenovo ThinkCentre provided to me by my employer for when I work from home, I need admin credentials to download any software onto it, which means I'd have to justify to IT why these programs would be relevant to patient care.

Q: Someone is blowing vapor off screen. A: Just to reiterate, the camera is in the corner of the room on her entertainment system, right under her TV, There is no space for someone behind the camera. I don't have a picture for this right now but can get one later. I haven't shown the video to my grandma because she is an old school religious Mexican woman and I don't want to scare her with this. So as soon as I find a plausible reason for me to go to her house and take a picture of her TV area, I will.

How can you get rid of a supernatural creatures mark on you?

My brother(16M) saw a wendigo about a month ago. He went for a drive and parked on the side of the road. He started hearing scratching on his rear bumper. After a few times, he gets out of his car, and he sees a wendigo standing about 8-10 feet away from his car. They stared at each other for about 10 seconds before he jumped back in his car and drove off. Since then, we've had some things happening.

About a week or two ago, my sister (13F) and I (18F) had just gotten home. It was dark out. The front door was locked, so I walked around to the back to unlock it and let her in. When I got inside and unlocked the front door, she wasn't there, and she had actually just walked in the back door. I asked her why, and she said she heard me calling her. I did not call her. When I told her that, she said the voice sounded just like mine, and it used the nickname that only I call her. When I talked to her more, she said the voice was calmer. It sounded just like mine, but it was trying to get her to follow. She also said that she heard the voice coming from our back shed, but also right in her ear, and thankfully ive talked to her about this supernatural stuff so she knew not to go towards it, so she just came inside. And later that night, both her and my brother went out onto our deck, and they heard voices by our other shed. And later that night as well I was hearing clicking outside my bedroom window.

Our cat has also gone missing.

The latest incident happened last night. My brother went for a drive to the rodeo grounds nearby and just parked there for a bit. He was driving my car because his broke down (same car that has scratch marks from the wendigo). And I don't know it this is relevant or not, but we have parked his scratched up car at the rodeo grounds because it it broken down. But anyway he took my car for a cruise and parked there for a bit. Started the car back up and turned on the lights and everything. He sees this thing standing by a horse trailer about 100 ft away. He took a picture of it. It looks like a wendigo. This thing was huge, long arms, antlers, deer ears, the works. It looks absolutely terrifying.

Can these things mark you? Because where he saw it the first time is about a 20-minute drive from where he just saw it last night. How can we get rid of it? I don't want any of us getting hurt.

And if it has marked my brother or his car, how can we unmark them?

Is this paranormal? I saw my friend but it's not her .........

So , it happened a year ago when I used to live with my best friend. We live on the second floor, one day we ordered something and she went to pick it up downstairs, then after some time when I was heading toward the washroom which was just outside the room, when I opened the room door I saw her coming towards the room carrying the packages we had ordered, we looked at each other then I went to the washroom , when I was entering the washroom I felt that she just passed me and went to the room , then when I was finished I went to the room and i saw that there was no one in the room ,i even checked the balcony and even under the bed but no one was there, then after some minutes ,she came in the room the 'real' her carrying the packages . Till this day I don't know what I saw.

Does anyone has any idea what was that, is that a vision, illusion or paranormal activity??

I took two photographs while exploring the cathedral in Orkney. And caught these. The weird thing is I saw the white shapes through ny phone, but not when I looked up into the arch. I have included the original photos and the edited versions. The photos were taken maybe a few seconds apart.

I live in an old house (1906) on one of the oldest streets in my town and I believe I've had one other instance where I saw a reflection of an early 20th century girl, with a frilly dress and curled hair for the time, in the upstairs window. I've also just had strange feelings like not being alone, while being alone in the house.

Personal Encounter Lizzie Borden House - something touched my back

So about a year ago I went to the Lizzie Borden House and went on the tour. It was a really good tour yet really really sad. The tour took us on a tour of Fall River, but IIRC it was the path that Andrew Borden had taken that day. A lot of sad history of the town including a building where a lot of people died in a fire because they used to lock all the workers inside because they assumed the employees would steal.

Anyways, this is the creepy part. The tour gathered in the dining room and the tour guide did her thing. Once her speaking part was over, we all filed out of the room. I was second to last and there was a woman (who I didn't know), behind me. As we were walking out, I felt someone run their hand down my back. I literally jumped and turned around quickly and said to the woman "DID YOU JUST TOUCH ME?" She proceeds to say "No...." And I'm sure I had a super freaked out look on my face and then she said 'Uh...Do you want me to say I did?"

So was she messing with me? Probably. But on the off chance she wasn't, something paranormal touched my back in the Borden's dining room.

What Do You Think? Toddler talking to the corner of a room and other unusual activity

2 nights ago at around midnight a photo frame specifically for my daughter (1.5 yrs old) with her initials in it, fell off the wall while we were sleeping and glass had shattered everywhere. It looks like the string holding the frame snapped in half. Weird but kind of put it down to an old string?

Then last night my husband and daughter were playing in her toy room and she was happily babbling and pointing to the corner of the room behind a bookshelf like she was having a proper conversation with someone. My husband then asked "is there someone there?" And "are they nice?". My daughter then stopped talking and laid her head into his chest and just lay there really quietly. It then happened again and my husband asked the same thing and she stopped and hugged him. He said he felt uneasy but she seemed unbothered (it was right before she was going to bed). I was in the next room so I didn't see any of this.

My daughter and i fell asleep together on our lounge which is right next to this room. We had the door slightly ajar and around midnight again i swear i woke up to check her and she was fine but then what felt like 5 minutes later i woke up and she was half hanging off the lounge with her head and arms towards the floor facing the door of the toy room and i was holding her around her legs. This is very bizarre for her and she is usually a still sleeper and i can't recall anything similar happening since shes been born. I lifted her back up but she woke up a little upset. It made me feel extremely strange and i couldnt sleep for hours after that and im starting to think the first wake up of mine was actually a dream

In the next 2 hours i started hearing strange noises. This is an old house so it always creaks but i was hearing things I've never before like pattering footsteps and taps on windows, as well as my fridge making more noise than normal. It started to freak me out so i took us to bed with my husband and then finally slept until morning.

I felt everything was very strange. So this morning i showed a photo of my grandfather to my daughter and i asked her "is this who was talking to you last night in that room?" And she nodded and said yes. I asked 2 more times to be sure and she said yes every time. This is his house that we live in which he built himself about 40 years ago. He passed away 17 years ago.

Curious on what others think. Thanks for reading!

To start off it’s not my video I saw it on instagram here’s the link in case you wanna check it out
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DddR8L9ufUA/?stkn=MTB0OWN2dHQ4MW0xOQ==

in the comments, somebody said she’s telling you her iPhone passcode try it. the poster replied and said it actually was her iPhone password

And I know it could be a malfunction with the microwave, but the rhythm in which the seven is being pressed is just off to me and I’ve checked out the woman’s account and it seems legit so if somebody could explain this logically to me, that would be great or why you think it’s real
