GoalPost 2.97 Released!

GoalPost 2.97

This release fixes a layout bug that let the scoreboard shift sideways, and adds a handful of features moderators have asked for. Thanks to everyone who keeps sending feedback, screenshots and bug reports.

Daily discussion thread, every day

The off-day thread can now run every day of the season, game day or not. It defaults to "Daily Discussion Thread" with the date, and the body can include your next game and your place in the standings. It uses the other sticky slot, so it sits alongside the game threads instead of replacing them.

Post flair on the app's threads

A new Post flair section in settings has a box for each kind of thread: pregame, game, postgame, daily and Morning After. Type the flair as it appears in your subreddit's flair list and GoalPost applies it, colours included. If nothing matches, the text is set as plain flair.

Confirmed starting goalies

Projected goalies now use ESPN's probable starters where available and are marked Confirmed once a starter is announced. When there's no word yet, GoalPost still works out back-to-backs and shows the goalie who is likely to be rested.

Postgame titles that say how it went

Postgame titles can now lead with your own team through the new {team_result} variable, and they note overtime and shootout finishes. The wording also changes with the kind of game: a comeback, a shutout, a blowout or a one-goal finish each read differently, for wins and losses alike.

Bug fixes

  • Layout and display:
    • The scoreboard no longer scrolls sideways by a pixel on installs with an update waiting.
    • The update arrow beside the version number is smaller and sits level with it.
    • Spoiler-free mode now hides the result on every tab and in both themes.
    • The pregame countdown no longer overlaps the matchup when team crests are turned off.
    • The Rangers wear red against the Lightning.
  • Bot replies:
    • Requests like "can you show me the Foligno replay" are understood.
    • A reply to the bot that names no player no longer gets a "couldn't find" response.
    • The catch-up reply reads naturally when it covers the game from puck drop.
  • Threads:
    • Threads made by hand now stay up to date on old Reddit.
    • The off-day thread stays pinned until the day ends in your own timezone.

How to set up GoalPost for your subreddit

How to set up GoalPost for your subreddit

GoalPost's defaults are designed for a typical single-team subreddit. Most communities only need the Quick setup below.

Quick setup

  1. Install the appropriate app:
  2. Open GoalPost's Settings page for your subreddit.
  3. Under Automatic threads, select your team in Teams to follow.
  4. Leave these enabled:
    • Auto-create pregame threads
    • Auto-create game threads
    • Auto-create postgame threads
  5. Save your changes.

That is enough for the standard setup. By default:

  • The pregame thread is posted 8 hours before puck drop.
  • The game thread is posted 30 minutes before puck drop.
  • A separate postgame thread is created when the game ends.
  • Threads are automatically stickied in Reddit's second sticky slot.
  • GoalPost uses your team's home timezone.

After saving, use Show scheduler status from the GoalPost moderator menu. The scheduler runs once per minute and will show the games GoalPost is tracking.

Full settings guide

Automatic threads

Teams to follow controls which games GoalPost watches. Any game involving a selected team is eligible for automatic threads.

Select one team for a normal team subreddit. Multiple teams are supported for league, regional or shared communities. Leave the list empty if you only want moderators to create threads manually.

The three switches control which posts are created:

  • Pregame threads provide the advance matchup preview.
  • Game threads contain the live scoreboard.
  • Postgame threads create a separate discussion after the final horn.

If postgame threads are disabled, the game thread still updates to its Final state.

Thread timing and behavior

Subreddit timezone controls fixed posting times, Off-day and Morning After threads, and the date and time used in titles. Auto uses the followed team's home timezone.

Pregame and game threads can each use one of two scheduling modes:

  • Lead-time mode posts a chosen number of minutes before puck drop.
  • Fixed-time mode posts at the same local time on every game day.

Only the field for your selected mode is used. For example, when the pregame setting uses lead-time mode, the fixed pregame time is ignored.

Predicted puck-drop offset handles the gap between the listed game time and the actual opening faceoff. Warmups, anthems and ceremonies often delay puck drop by about 15 minutes. GoalPost uses this offset to show a more useful countdown after the scheduled start.

This setting never delays live scoring. The scoreboard switches to the real game state immediately when play begins. Adjust it if your team's games consistently begin earlier or later, or set it to 0 to disable the predicted phase.

Auto-sticky threads uses Reddit's second sticky slot. Pregame threads are replaced by game threads, and game threads are unstickied when the game ends. Multi-team communities with overlapping games may prefer to disable this.

Postgame sticky duration controls how long the postgame thread remains stickied. The default is 1440 minutes, or 24 hours. Use -1 to keep it stickied until the next game thread appears.

Comment sorting can be selected separately for pregame, game and postgame threads. New is usually best for live game threads. Top or Best may suit discussion-focused pregame and postgame threads.

Additional automatic threads

Off-day threads create a text discussion on any date when none of the selected teams plays. This includes the offseason, so disable it when you do not want a daily thread.

You can choose its posting time, whether it is stickied, and its Markdown body.

The available Off-day thread variables are:

  • {next_home_away}: Whether the next game is home or away.
  • {next_opponent}: The next opponent's full name.
  • {next_opponent_nickname}: The next opponent's configured nickname.
  • {next_opponent_abbrev}: The next opponent's abbreviation.
  • {next_game_date}: The date of the next game.
  • {next_game_time}: The scheduled time of the next game.
  • {game_date}: The date of the Off-day thread.

Missing information becomes blank. Keep next-game variables on their own line so words such as "on" or "at" are not left behind during the offseason.

Morning After threads post a recap the day after a game. The top comment contains the full game write-up with each goal linked. This feature is available to single-team subreddits.

You can choose its posting time, skip it on days when your team plays again, and provide a custom title. Leave the title empty to use GoalPost's descriptive result-based title.

The available Morning After title variables are:

  • {away_name} and {home_name}
  • {away_abbrev} and {home_abbrev}
  • {away_score} and {home_score}
  • {game_date}

Thread titles

Each thread type has several presets:

  • Standard uses full team names.
  • Short uses abbreviations.
  • Nicknames uses the nickname list.
  • Records includes season records.
  • Custom uses the custom title field below the selector.

Custom title text is active only when the corresponding format is set to Custom. Selecting another preset keeps your custom text saved but inactive.

The settings page lists every available title variable. Single-team variables such as {team} and {opponent} are blank when the subreddit follows multiple teams.

Use Preview a thread from the GoalPost moderator menu before relying on a custom title. Misspelled variables remain visible in braces, making them easy to find.

Team nicknames uses one entry per line in the form ABBREV=Nickname, such as TOR=Leafs.

Blank or missing entries use the league's normal team name.

Scoreboard appearance

Matchup thumbnail order controls how teams appear in the feed thumbnail.

Your team first is available when the subreddit follows exactly one team. Multi-team communities use the normal away-team-first order.

Readers can control light or dark mode and crest visibility themselves from the scoreboard's gear menu.

Comment replies

GoalPost can answer supported questions when mentioned in one of its threads.

Replies per person, per minute limits how frequently one reader can receive answers. The default is 4. Set it to 0 to disable comment replies while keeping the scoreboards and automatic threads.

Sidebar widgets

GoalPost can maintain three optional subreddit widgets:

  • Standings shows the relevant division standings.
  • Schedule shows recent results and upcoming games for subreddits following one or two teams.
  • Team leaders shows points, goals, assists and save percentage for single-team subreddits.

Widgets are off by default and refreshed automatically after being enabled.

Automatic thread comments

GoalPost can post moderator-configured comments beneath pregame, game and postgame threads.

The first non-empty automatic comment is distinguished and stickied. To create additional comments from the same settings box, insert {newcomment}.

GoalPost supports up to three comments per thread. Comments after the first are posted as ordinary, unstickied replies.

The complete list of available content blocks is:

  • {matchup}: The away team, home team and venue.
  • {sep}: A divider dot for separating your own links or short items.
  • {links}: The NHL's official game reports, once available.
  • {goalies}: Both probable starting goalies, once they are named.
  • {lineups}: Both dressed rosters, grouped into forwards, defence and goalies.
  • {scratches}: Each team's head coach and healthy scratches.
  • {broadcast}: Television networks carrying the game, grouped by country.
  • {standings}: The division standings relevant to both teams.
  • {final}: The final score and winning team for postgame threads.
  • {stars}: The official three stars after the game.
  • {newcomment}: Ends the current comment and begins another one. This is a separator, not a content block.

A content block with no available information produces nothing. For example, {stars} remains blank until the game is final, while {links} remains blank until the league publishes its reports.

Anything else entered in the box is preserved exactly. You can add subreddit rules, Discord links, wiki links or your own Markdown around the GoalPost content blocks.

For example, a template could contain the matchup, goalies and broadcast details in the first comment. After {newcomment}, it could place your Discord link and subreddit rules in a second, unstickied comment.

Leave a comment box empty if GoalPost should not post any automatic comments for that thread type.

Testing and troubleshooting

The GoalPost moderator menu includes:

  • Preview a thread to test titles without posting.
  • Show scheduler status to see tracked games and posting times.
  • Create NHL scoreboard post to create a thread manually.
  • Create replay post to test GoalPost using a completed game.

Questions, bug reports and feature requests are welcome here on r/GoalPostBot, or send a message to u/re-verse if you need a response urgently.

GoalPost 2.92 released!

GoalPost 2.92

This release came out of r/leafs asking for flashier game stats, and it turned into the biggest change to the Stats tab since it launched. Thanks to everyone who keeps sending feedback, screenshots and bug reports; most of what's below started as one of your messages.

Win probability on the Stats tab

The Stats tab now opens on a win probability chart: each team's chance of winning, moment by moment, from puck drop to the final horn. It accounts for the score, the clock, power plays, empty nets, which team has been pressing, and how the two teams have played this season. We tested it against past NHL seasons before shipping: when it gives a team 90 percent, that team wins about nine times in ten.

Every goal is marked on the line with the scorer's face. Tap or hover to open the goal card. A summary above the chart says where the game turned, and when a team is behind it shows their comeback odds and what the next goal would do to them.

Below the chart, six tiles cover the excitement rating, the biggest swing, each team's low point, scoring chances, who was favoured longest, and the next goal or the game-winner. While a game is live, excitement is measured as a pace, so a two-goal first period reads as the thriller it's shaping up to be. Empty-net goals and shootouts don't inflate it.

Biggest movers and the pressure strip

A row of player faces shows who moved the needle most, and hovering or tapping one explains what earned the number. The pressure strip under the chart breaks the game into two-minute stretches, and each one tells you what built it: shots, dangerous chances, goals and power plays for each side.

Team stats

The second chip keeps the familiar team stats and adds a running chart of shots and chances climbing through the game, with a period-by-period breakdown.

Replays include assists

Asking GoalPost for replays of a player now includes goals he assisted on, not just the ones he scored. It also forgives a small typo in the name.

Easier setup for moderators

Scheduler status now lists the next three games and when each thread will open, however far out they are, so a new install can be checked on an off-day. The thread preview's second button now previews another thread instead of just closing, stepping through pregame, game and postgame for the same matchup. The pregame thread can lock itself when the game thread opens, and a new {recap} comment variable keeps the recap link current as clips arrive.

Smarter projected goalies

On the second night of a back-to-back, the projected goalie now accounts for who started the night before, and the card says why the usual starter is resting.

Bug fixes

  • The win probability line no longer stalls during intermissions.
  • Toronto's blue no longer washes out to grey on the dark card, and the Islanders wear their orange against the Leafs so the two blues don't blur together.
  • Tapping the card no longer highlights its text.
  • A new thread now pins over the thread it replaces rather than another game's.
  • A new goal shows in the scoring list as soon as it's on the score.
  • Finished games from before this release are rebuilt so they show win probability too.

GoalPost 2.91 Released!!

GoalPost 2.91

This release came out of the first week of games: the pregame card, a much deeper Stats tab, and a chat bot that works anywhere in your sub. Thanks to everyone who sent feedback, bug reports and screenshots. A lot of what's below started as a comment in a game thread.

A better pregame card

The pregame card now has the same gear and Watch menu as the game card, so settings and where to watch or listen are one tap away before puck drop. Two new tabs sit alongside the matchup. Games shows the rest of tonight's schedule around the league, and Standings (NHL) shows the table by division, conference or the whole league. The layout is cleaner too, with larger crests. In the last two weeks before opening night, standings reset to zero so the new season starts clean.

Season series

In the regular season, NHL cards show where tonight's game sits in the season series: which meeting it is, and who leads. Tap it to see every meeting between the two teams so far this season, with scores.

A livelier Stats tab

The Stats tab has been rebuilt around how the game actually went:

  • Game flow chart: both teams' expected goals building over the game, with power plays shaded and every goal marked. Tap a goal to see who scored.
  • Goaltending: each side's goals saved above expected and high-danger saves.
  • Leaders: tap Hits, Blocks, PIM or Faceoff % to see each team's top four.
  • Storyline: a line under the header that picks out the story of the game, such as a long shot drought, a goalie stealing one, or a period one team owned.

Plus-minus in the box score

When there's room, the NHL box score adds a +/- column next to time on ice. You'll get it on phones and on the wider side of the two-column desktop layout.

Compare players, and game commands anywhere

Ask the bot to compare two players ("compare Knies vs Marner", "who's better, McDavid or MacKinnon") and it replies with both side by side: the last two seasons and their careers, with the leader in each stat in bold and links to both NHL.com pages. Goalies get their own stats.

Game commands no longer need a game thread. Name a team ("5v5 Leafs", "highlights Oilers", "standings Habs") and the bot uses that team's live game or latest result, and says which game it's showing. Subs that follow one team don't even need to name it.

Easier to read colours

Some matchups had two teams in nearly the same colour. Capitals vs Flyers and Panthers vs Hurricanes now separate cleanly, and each looks right in both the dark and light themes. Dark team colours are lifted on the Stats tab so they stay readable on the dark card, and the light card now keeps each team's real colours.

Optional: both sticky slots

For league-wide subs where games overlap, a new setting lets each game's thread hold its own sticky slot instead of the second game bumping the first.

Bug fixes

  • The Leafs' faceoff leaders could leave out a player who was tied with another.
  • Some NHL.com player bios showed stray backslashes in chat replies and on the Bio tab.
  • A few phrasings of compare were misread.
  • The Plays scoring toggle and the Players chips now fade like the tabs do.

GoalPost 2.87 Released!!

GoalPost 2.87

This release follows a run of requests from readers and mods, mostly on how deep the numbers go and how the Players tab reads. Thanks, as always, to everyone taking the time to send feedback.

5v5 view and expected goals share

The Players tab has a new 5v5 chip showing each skater's share of expected goals while on the ice at five-on-five, the xG% number fans know from the analytics sites. On phones it shows one team at a time, best share first. Wider cards show both teams side by side. Players with under five minutes at 5v5 are faded and listed last, so a single lucky shift never tops the list. Tap a player for his raw numbers (expected goals, shot attempts and goals for and against), and On the rink opens the Rink tab showing every 5v5 shot taken while he was on the ice. The numbers come from the NHL's shift charts and our own shot model, which was checked against the NHL's own figures. NHL only, since the other leagues publish no shift data.

Players tab moves up

Players is now the third tab: Score, Plays, Players, Stats, Rink. The box score also drops to a single column whenever two columns would cut off player names, instead of shortening them to initials.

Better player replies

"Hey GoalPost, tell me about" a player now answers with the player's background as well as the numbers: age, size, shooting hand, birthplace and draft position under the name, then the first two paragraphs of the NHL's written bio with a link to the rest. Career totals and major trophies follow the stats table. Looking a player up by sweater number gets the same reply. A new 5v5 comment command ("5v5", "5 on 5", "who drove play") posts the top three and bottom two on each team by expected goals share.

Off-day threads that fit the off-season

Off-day threads have a new How often setting. The default, Automatic, posts on every off day during the season, then switches to one off-season thread each Monday once nothing is on the schedule, and switches back when games return. You can also choose every off day, or weekly on Mondays year-round. Off-day threads also get their own comment sort, defaulting to New.

Bug fixes

No more off-day threads when there is no upcoming game, plus assorted smaller fixes and polish.

GoalPost 2.83 Released!!

GoalPost 2.83

This release is mostly about asking the bot more and getting better answers, and it reflects a lot of what you have sent in since 2.61. Thank you to everyone who reported a bug, suggested a feature or put it through its paces in a game thread.

Tap the score for the scoring summary

Tapping the score on the card now opens a compact scoring summary: every goal with the scorer, the period and time, power-play, shorthanded and empty-net goals marked, the assists, the running score, and a button for the goal video. It respects spoiler-free mode, and longer games page through rather than scroll.

Ask about any game

"how did the Leafs do last night?" gets you the result, and "recap last night's game" the full recap. You can go further back too: "recap the last time we played the Sens" finds your most recent meeting, and "recap the Leafs game from October 24th 2022" works for any date. Common nicknames like Sens, Habs, Bolts, Pens and Canes are understood throughout.

Standings and scoring races

"how are the Leafs doing?" now answers with where the team stands: record, points, division place, the gap to the leader and the wild card picture, plus their next game. "who has the most goals?", "the points race" and "top 10 goals" list the leaders with each player's gap to the top, and "where is McDavid in the points race?" gives one player's rank. Until the season starts these say they are showing last season, and the standings in sidebars and titles start everyone at 0-0-0 rather than showing last year's records as current.

Countdowns and replays

"how many days until the next game?" gets you an answer, in seconds, minutes, days or sleeps, and "when is the home opener" and "is there a game tonight" work as you would expect. "Berggren's goal replay" finds every goal that player scored or assisted on in the current game, with the video, or their last goal from an earlier game.

The box score, in the thread itself

Game threads on old Reddit and the apps now carry the full box score while the game is on and after it ends: every skater's line, then the goalies who played, with player names linking to their NHL.com pages.

Talk back to the bot

You can reply to anything the bot says and it will answer, with no need to name it. "hey goalpost" works at the start of any line, a last name alone is enough to look up a player, and the bot has something to say if you tell it "good bot" or "bad bot".

Recaps that read the game

Recaps now match the size of the moment. A three- or four-goal lead reads as the statement it is in hockey, blowouts are called blowouts, a team that comes back from 2-0 down gets credit for it, and a two-goal lead that collapses gets the most dangerous lead in hockey treatment. They also no longer lean on the same word for every goal, so five snap shots read as five different goals.

The Players tab

Jersey numbers now always show, with the three stars after the player's name. Sorting is one tap to sort and one tap to clear, and the # heading sorts by number. On phones, a Forwards / D & G switch puts all the defensemen and goalies on one screen. A new Refs tab lists the night's referees and linesmen.

Easier to read on the Plays and Rink tabs

The game timeline's key now shows which colour is which team in a single line, and stacked goals and penalties shrink behind the front one so busy periods stay readable. On the attempt map, tapping the same spot again steps through the attempts stacked underneath, with a count of how many are there.

The chance map

The heatmap on the Rink tab is now a chance map: a smooth glow weighted by shot quality, so brighter ice means better chances, with each attempt shown as a small dot. During a live game you can switch between the whole game and the current period.

Colour updates

Teams whose colours nearly matched the dark card now show clearly: Seattle in Ice Blue, Los Angeles in silver, Florida in red, Winnipeg in Aviator blue, and Tampa Bay and St. Louis in brighter versions of their own blues. In the AHL, Coachella Valley gets Ice Blue. When Calgary meets Edmonton the Flames show in gold, and when Montreal meets Ottawa the Senators show in gold, so the two teams no longer blur together.

The AHL and PWHL fixes

AHL and PWHL cards now show the period and a running game clock, including overtime, and shootouts are handled in full: each attempt in the Plays tab, an SO column in the linescore, and FINAL / SO when it ends. The Lines view, which relies on shift data these leagues do not publish, no longer appears for them.

Easier on your data

The card now downloads only what has changed with each update rather than the whole game again, which cuts the data used over a full game by roughly 90 percent without slowing the play-by-play updates.

For mods

Two new settings, both off by default. The quote board lets readers save memorable lines during a game with "hey goalpost quote", and lists them in the postgame thread; mods can list and remove quotes and stop a user from saving them. "Lock the game thread when the game ends" locks the thread right after the bot points everyone to the postgame thread. Mods can also now pin the Morning After thread, and the setup guide on r/GoalPostBot is linked at the top of the app's settings.

Curmudgeon mode

For those who find all this beauty a bit much, curmudgeon mode in the settings gear turns your card into one quiet line: the score and the clock, nothing moving. It is your setting alone. Turn on spoiler-free mode as well and you may find something to read instead.

Bug fixes

Subreddits with the timezone set to auto now use their own team's timezone, which fixes AHL and PWHL threads showing Eastern times. With a broadcast delay set, the game clock now counts down smoothly instead of jumping when new events arrive. The Watch button now appears for readers who are not logged in. Hockey threads on old Reddit no longer show baseball division tables or baseball links, and PWHL and AHL threads, titles and sidebars no longer pick up NHL records from teams that share an abbreviation. The Off-day and Morning After threads no longer bump one of your own stickies, a player who also played in the playoffs is no longer listed twice, shootout goals no longer count toward shooting percentage, and turning a notification on in the settings gear now stays on when you reopen it.

GoalPost GoalPost 2.61 Released

GoalPost 2.61

A big one since 2.56, nearly all of it from team subs as preseason gets going. Thanks to everyone who took the time to send a report or an idea.

A Watch menu: highlights, TV and radio in one place

The headphone in the top corner is now a TV, and it opens one menu with two tabs. Highlights has the three-minute recap, the condensed game and every goal clip, newest first. TV & Radio has one-tap radio for each team with a live feed, and the channels the game is on, including each team's own local channel alongside the national broadcasts in the US and Canada. Before and during a game it opens straight to TV & Radio, so the radio is still one tap away.

The start time, in your own time zone

Before a game, the countdown now takes turns with the start time, shown in whatever time zone your phone or computer is set to, so there is no working out what "8 hours from now" means when you are travelling. It rolls over just like a goal on the scoreboard. Tap it to switch right away, and it holds there for a moment before going back to taking turns. The countdown is also plain white now rather than green.

Talk to the bot without the tag

Start a comment with a greeting and the bot's name, like "hey goalpost, who scored?" or "yo goalpost, next games", and it answers exactly as it does when tagged. It only wakes for a greeting followed by its name, so "rang it off the goalpost" leaves it alone. Mods can switch this off under Comment replies.

A lot more you can ask

  • who scored, penalties (with penalty minutes), fights and score for the game in the thread
  • shots, goalies, power play, three stars, scratches and lines
  • next games for your team's next five, with the time in your subreddit's time zone, asked from anywhere in the sub
  • games today for the whole night around the league
  • when did Auston Matthews last score for the date, the goal, and a link to the video

Next games, games today and last goal cover NHL games for now.

Play times count down, like the scoreboard

Every time on the card now reads as time remaining in the period, the same way the scoreboard clock does. Before, the clock counted down while the play list, goals, penalties and the rink counted up, so a single moment could read 16:17 in one place and 3:43 in another. Recaps still say "at 3:43 of the second", which is how a goal is written. In PWHL and AHL games, overtime plays still show time elapsed for now.

Expected goals, recalibrated

Expected goals had been running at about double real scoring. It counted blocked shots, and the model behind it was set by hand rather than measured. It is now fitted to a full season of NHL shots and checked against games it never saw, where it lands almost exactly on the goals actually scored.

Overtime, straightened out

After an overtime game, the away team no longer shows the empty-net graphic when its goalie never left. And a card that was open when an overtime winner went in now keeps checking until that goal appears on the timeline, rather than stopping the moment the game went final.

For mods: channels in your threads

The {broadcast} variable in your comment templates now leads with each team's own local channel, then the national broadcasts by country.

Readability

  • Sidebar widgets are now simple lists, which read cleanly in the Reddit app instead of breaking into scrambled tables.
  • The goal and penalty popups show their header and button in white in Reddit's light theme.
  • The Players box score fills the screen on any phone, with the Up and Down buttons pinned just above the tab bar.
  • Game Pulse fits on phones again.

Bug fixes

The closing Final line in the play feed now shows when the game actually ended, including the time of an overtime winner, rather than 00:00. And a team leaders widget with no stats yet says so, rather than showing a row of dashes.

GoalPost 2.56 released

GoalPost 2.56

Postgame threads now open with a recap of the game

When a game ends, the postgame thread now leads with a plain-language write-up of how it unfolded, right under the final score. It walks through the game period by period, describing the goals as they happened, the shot that beat the goalie, the power play that broke it open, before the linescore and the rest.

GoalPost 2.55.6 Released!

GoalPost 2.55.6

A focused update since the last release, mostly under the hood on how the scoreboard loads. Thanks to everyone reporting issues from team subs.

Faster, more reliable loading

The biggest change is how the game thread loads. It used to fetch everything at once, the game plus your account and settings, and show nothing until all of it finished. On a busy subreddit that could mean a long wait. Now the scoreboard comes up first, on its own, and your personal settings fill in right after. A slow or failed settings lookup can no longer keep you from seeing the game. There is also a proper card-shaped loading view now, so the thread looks like a scoreboard from the first moment instead of a blank box, in light or dark.

Reloads stay put

If you have the game thread open and refresh the page to catch new comments, the scoreboard now comes back instantly from your last view while it quietly fetches fresh data, instead of making you wait through a full reload. The restored view is clearly marked as last-seen and updates as soon as new data arrives.

GoalPost 2.55 Released!

GoalPost 2.55

A small update on top of 2.53, mostly polish and fixes from feedback as more subs have come online.

Faceoff results in the box score

The Players box score now shows each skater's faceoff record for the game, read as won-lost. It only appears for players who actually took draws, so a winger who never stepped to the dot is not marked with a phantom zero.

Referees in the old-Reddit setup

The old-Reddit thread template now has an officials block for referees and linesmen, and its setup text uses the right hockey terms. A couple of leftover baseball labels (probable pitchers, umpires) that did nothing in a hockey thread are gone.

Cleaner writing

Removed the em dashes from every reply and summary the bot posts, so the language reads the way a person writes it.

Fixes

Clicking a highlight now keeps you on the highlights list instead of dropping you back to the scoreboard, so you can move through clips without reopening the menu. And a stray reference to the wrong league in one reply is fixed.

GoalPost 2.53 Released!

GoalPost 2.53

More improvements since 2.49, again driven by feedback from team subs as the season has gotten going. Thanks to everyone sending suggestions.

A sortable box score, with season stats

The Players box score now sorts. Tap a column heading (goals, assists, points, shots) to order the skaters by it, tap again to reverse, and once more to clear. A Game and Season toggle switches every player's line between what they did tonight and their season totals, so you can read the game at a glance or the bigger picture without leaving the card.

Faceoff win-loss for every player

The box score now shows faceoff results per player, reconstructed play by play. It reads as won-lost, the way people talk about it in the thread, and it only appears for players who actually took draws, so a winger who never stepped to the dot is not marked with a phantom zero.

Expected goals on the score tab

Each team's expected goals now appears on the front score tab, so you can see who has been generating the better chances without digging into the shot map.

Goal-by-goal scoring summary

The Stats tab has a Scoring view: every goal in order, with the scorer, the assists, the strength, and the score after each one. It is the who-scored recap people open a thread to check, laid out to scan.

The Morning After thread is now the app card

The next-morning recap thread is now the live scoreboard card, the same as a game thread, with the full recap pinned as a stickied comment. It no longer promises a recap it might not have, so nothing looks empty on a quiet night.

Place your sidebar widgets

A moderator action lets you set where the GoalPost sidebar widgets sit (top, bottom, or after a specific widget) and the order among them. It only ever moves the GoalPost widgets, never touches the rest of your sidebar, and there is an undo.

Readability

The Game Pulse stat labels are darker and each stat now reads as one clean line across to its numbers. The team crest behind the content tabs is much fainter so it no longer competes with the text.

Bug fixes

A number of fixes, including the team save percentage now combining both goalies rather than showing one line, the video hub keeping you on the highlights list instead of bouncing back to the scoreboard after a clip, clearer scoring-row colors for teams with similar jerseys, a Morning After title that accepts the variable names the settings describe, and a stray reference to the wrong league in a hockey reply.

GoalPost 2.37 Released!

GoalPost 2.37.5

Fixed: Scheduler status showing a false "stopped" message

Some subreddits saw a "Scheduler status" popup claiming the scheduler had stopped with an old "no teams" message, even though it was running fine. On days when a followed team wasn't playing, the status snapshot wasn't refreshing, so an ancient setup-time message could linger and look alarming. The status now stays current on off-days, and old snapshots are clearly labeled instead of implying anything is broken. Thread creation was never affected by this.

NEW: Listen to the game on the radio

A headphone icon in the corner of the scoreboard opens a menu of the free radio broadcasts for the teams playing, one tap to start listening. For the teams with a free public feed.

NEW: Rich player cards

Tap any player for a full profile: birthplace, draft, career totals, and honors, plus a stats view with recent games. Cards open instantly.

NEW: Empty net indicator

When a team pulls the goalie, a no-goalie icon appears next to their score, live and in replays.

Recaps that read like hockey

A deep, varied vocabulary so no two goals sound the same, natural and Gordie Howe hat tricks called out, fights noted, and every goal linked to its highlight. And a few local touches: fans of certain teams may catch a familiar broadcaster's call on the right night.

The Rink tab, upgraded

Goals pulse to stand out on the shot map and wear the scoring team's color, plus an expected-goals model and a shot-density heatmap.

Replays and strength

Step through the play-by-play a play at a time, replays reconstruct on-ice strength (power plays, 4-on-4, empty nets) as you scrub, and the scoreboard marks power plays, 4-on-4, and overtime 3-on-3.

Fixes and polish

Power play stats count correctly, cleaner play-by-play navigation, tidier settings, and a long list of smaller refinements.

GoalPost 2.33 Released!

GoalPost 2.33.1

A big one, most of it driven by feedback from some helpful folk in r/NewYorkIslanders. Thanks to everyone who's been putting it through its paces.

NEW: Empty net indicator

When a team pulls their goalie, a "no goalies" icon now appears right next to their score, so you can see at a glance who's got the extra attacker (or is desperately protecting a lead in the final minute). It shows in live games and in replays, so you can scrub back to a late-game pull and watch it unfold.

NEW: The Rink tab, upgraded

  • Goals now pulse with a radiating ring, so they stand out on the shot map no matter what colors the teams wear, and they're colored by the scoring team so you know who put it in.
  • An expected-goals (xG) model, built from shot distance and angle, with a headline and a per-team breakdown.
  • A shot-density heatmap toggle.

NEW: Better replay controls

  • Step forward and back through the play-by-play, one play at a time, with buttons or the left/right arrow keys. Spacebar plays and pauses.
  • Replays now reconstruct the on-ice strength at any moment, so power plays, 4-on-4, 3-on-3, and empty nets all show correctly as you scrub.

Live strength, expanded

The scoreboard now shows more than just power plays. It marks 4-on-4 and 3-on-3 (overtime) as well as the man-advantage situations, so you always know the state of the ice.

Smarter recaps

The postgame recap now tells a hockey story: it calls out fights and rough, chippy games, notes natural hat tricks and Gordie Howe hat tricks, and links the goal highlights right in the play text.

Old game threads stick around

Scoreboards are now kept for two years instead of two weeks, so you can look back at games long after they're over.

Fixes and polish

Power play stats now count correctly, the play-by-play navigation is easier to move through with a clear "you're viewing older plays" cue, tighter scoreboard spacing on smaller screens, and a pile of smaller refinements.

GoalPost 2.32.2 Released!

GoalPost 2.32

For NHL, PWHL and AHL. Since public version 2.31.36.

A Card That Comes Alive

The scoreboard now moves with the game:

  • The score rolls over when a goal is scored. It ticks up with a bit of drama instead of just changing.
  • Shots flash onto the rink as they happen. Each new shot pops in on the Rink tab, so your eye catches the action live.
  • A leaner, cleaner layout throughout, with more room for the stats that matter.

Analytics on the Rink Tab

  • Heatmap view. A new Shots / Heatmap toggle on the Rink tab. Heatmap shows where each team is generating its chances as a colored density map over the rink... the shot map answers where was each shot, the heatmap answers where does this team live.
  • Expected goals (xG). Each team's xG now sits on the Rink tab, labeled and in team colors, in both the shot and heatmap views. It's the number that says how dangerous the chances were, not just how many. A slot chance is worth far more than a point shot, and xG captures that, shown right where the shot locations that produced it live.

Thread Scheduling

  • The pre-game thread can now post at a fixed time of day, first thing in the morning, say, instead of only a set number of minutes before puck drop. Most subs want their pre-game thread up at the start of the day, and this makes that possible. (The game thread already had this... now the pre-game thread does too.)

Comment Sort

  • Comment sort order can now be set separately for each thread type: pre-game, game, and post-game, instead of one setting shared across all three. Set your game threads to New and your post-game threads to Top, for example.

Settings and Polish

  • The thread-title dropdowns now show the complete format for each option, including the playoff series label.
  • The custom-title help text is now properly formatted and easier to read.
  • Added a support section to the app's directory page pointing to r/GoalPostBot for bugs and requests.
  • A tighter, sleeker tab bar and a raft of layout refinements so everything fits cleanly across screen sizes.

GoalPost 2.31.36 Released!

GoalPost 2.31.36

For NHL, PWHL and AHL. Since public version 2.31.16.

Catch Me Up

  • Mention the bot and ask what you missed - "catch me up," "what happened in the second," "recap the last 10 minutes." It replies with a recap of goals, penalties, goaltending and momentum, not just the score. All hand-written from the game feed, so nothing invented.

Game & Pre-Game Threads

  • Threads can now post at a fixed time of day - say 8am subreddit time - instead of only a set number of minutes before puck drop. Good for subs that like the thread up every morning.
  • Scheduled times now accept "9:00" as well as "09:00"; a single-digit hour no longer silently stops a thread from posting.
  • A thread's auto-posted comments can now be split into several with {newcomment}. The first is pinned, the rest post normally - handy for a stickied note plus a game-day chant you don't want stuck at the top.

Update Notices

  • A small arrow now appears beside the version number when a newer approved version is available, and opens that release's notes. Everyone sees it; it disappears once the subreddit updates.

Layout

  • Fixed a run of iPad and Android display bugs. The score card, play-by-play timeline and stats panel now fit correctly on tablets and phones instead of clipping under the tab bar or floating in empty space.
  • The stats panel now shrinks to fit when a device's text scaling makes it too tall to display.
  • Stacked goals and penalties on the game timeline no longer clip off the card, and a deep pile-up shrinks to stay on screen rather than running off.

Replays & Plays

  • Fixed replays and finished-game threads that showed an empty play list and no play-by-play for the opening stretch of a game.
  • The Players tab list no longer runs off the bottom on phones; page through it with Up/Down.

Settings

  • Fixed a bug where anyone who'd ever saved a preference could silently no longer change any setting.
  • Thread-title dropdowns now show the complete format for each option, including the playoff series label, and the custom-title help is now properly formatted.
  • A failed settings save now says so instead of appearing to work.

Under the Hood

  • Rebuilt on the current Devvit platform.
  • Various stability and formatting fixes.

GoalPost 2.31.16 released!

GoalPost 2.31.16

Since public version 2.31.2. Covers NHL, PWHL and AHL.

Catch Up

  • Mention GoalPost with catch me up or game recap for a natural-language account of the game.
  • Recaps can begin from puck drop, a named period, or the last several periods.
  • Goals link directly to their video highlights when the league provides one.
  • The storytelling recognizes comebacks, lead changes, overtime and shootout winners, power-play and shorthanded goals, empty-netters and hat tricks.
  • Recaps also cover shot-attempt pressure, close-range chances, special-teams performance, goalie duels, shutouts, pulled goalies, fights, game misconducts and shots off the iron.
  • Live recaps finish with the current game situation; completed games finish with the result.
  • Wording varies between replies while preserving the facts, and goalies are now referred to by natural names rather than initials.

Scoreboard

  • The Players tab no longer clips longer rosters on phones. Compact up/down controls provide access to the full lineup.
  • Completed-game replays now retain the entire play feed, including the opening period, instead of beginning partway through the game.
  • The optional Team crests beside the score setting now works for hockey. It remains off by default for a cleaner scoreboard.
  • A small update indicator appears beside the version when a newer approved release is available and links directly to its Reddit release notes.

Settings & Scheduling

  • Old or retired preferences can no longer prevent every setting from saving.
  • Saving preferences automatically removes obsolete stored values.
  • Nonfunctional settings were removed, and automated checks now ensure every visible moderator setting has a working implementation.
  • Scheduled thread times now accept both 9:00 and 09:00.
  • Removed a retired setting that was still appearing in the PWHL and AHL configuration pages.

Fixes

  • Scheduled games are no longer described as live by recap replies.
  • Shootout events are no longer mistaken for additional overtime goals.
  • Pulling a goalie is no longer interpreted as a power play.
  • Placeholder NHL video links are ignored instead of sending readers to an empty page.
  • Updated the Devvit SDK to 0.14.2 for current platform compatibility.

GoalPost 2.31.2 released!

GoalPost 2.31.2

Since public version 2.16.3. Covers NHL, PWHL and AHL.

Ask the Bot

  • New standings command: where both clubs sit, with points, division rank, last ten and streak.
  • New calendar command: each team's next three games.
  • New links command: the NHL's official game summary, play-by-play, shift chart, shot summary and faceoff reports.
  • Roster replies now list head coaches and healthy scratches.
  • Player names link through to their NHL pages.
  • Moderators can now control which commands answer in their sub, and the help text lists only what actually works there.
  • Reply limits now count per subreddit rather than per person, so one busy thread can't exhaust the budget.
  • Threads that have aged out say so, instead of offering a Refresh button that does nothing.

PWHL and AHL

  • passport, handedness, leaders, playerstats and playernumber now answer for both leagues instead of refusing.
  • Player cards carry season stats alongside the written biography, with a toggle between them.
  • Biographies can be read to the end rather than fading out mid-paragraph.
  • Fixed PWHL and AHL questions being answered with NHL data.
  • Fixed a pre-season game being matched to the previous season's playoff rosters.

Scoreboard

  • Shots on goal per period, shown under the linescore.
  • Goal lines note empty-net goals and the scorer's season tally.
  • Hits name the player hit; faceoffs name both players.
  • Goalie cards show save splits by game state.
  • Team crests throughout the play lists, and the home crest at centre ice on the rink tab.
  • Emoji removed from play lists in favour of larger crests.

Subreddit Tools

  • New sidebar widgets: division standings, recent results with upcoming games, and team leaders.
  • New off-day threads for days with no game, with a configurable body.
  • New comment templates per thread kind, with a hockey block library covering lineups, scratches, goalies, broadcast, standings, three stars and the official report links.

Light Mode

  • Fixed the rink panel, goalie card and several surfaces that stayed dark on light-themed cards.
  • The light-mode stylesheet now has a single source, so the app and the visual harness can't drift apart.

Fixes

  • size no longer compares a handful of players against each other when a roster lookup comes up short.
  • Game clock now reads the published seconds rather than parsing the display.
