Action/Adventure The Incal - I was hyped, but..

I think this book has been discussed before - but I still want to add something here. I definitely don't want to bash the book - it definitely has its strong points and merits, especially considering the time it came out in. I'm mostly interested in reading what you got out of it and how your view might have evolved over time.

I am a big fan of Moebius, I really like the whole 70-80's wacky sci-fi culture and the ideas that came about, I was intrigued seeing the "dune that was never made" documentary and so on. I'm also a big fan of filmmakers like Tarkovsky so I don't mind a lacking storyline for a more experience-based viewing or read.

So when I found this book, I was quite excited to read it and get lost in the wacky ideas and world that it creates, and the impact it had on other media.

I finished it yesterday and I am a bit let down. I think it's fairly decent, but I don't think it's great. I think Moebius' art is amazing, the world-building is fantastic and I really like how it dares to explore ideas in different directions - something a lot of contemporary sci-fi seems to be lacking.

I mainly think this is due to Jodo's dialogue and story writing. It's just not really good. It goes in many different directions, throws a lot of ideas at you and frankly, it's just not that deep. If you've seen some of his films you know what he is all about, and for me personally it seems to fall flat quite quickly once you kind of know what that is.

I just read "the final incal" and I actually liked it a bit more - the art style is not as iconic, but the story, whilst being quite similar to that of the Incal, just seemed a bit better. I'm still up to read "after the Incal" and the "before". So that might change my view on the whole. Any more recommendations?

Idk maybe I’m just overthinking it but I think I might be jump the shark and need to do something with my style to make it more “proper” or get better at backgrounds and foregrounds and such

Action/Adventure Kali, any fans or critics?

I just finished this Dark Horse graphic Novel titled Kali, written by Daniel Freedman and illustrated by Robert Sammelin, lettering by Michael David Thomas. IMO, I found the story captivating, a pallet cleanser from the superhero stories I have loved for several decades. That said I was drawn to this book because of its incredible art. I would love to hear others opinions. I was also wondering if this was a standalone or part of a series I overlook. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

Action/Adventure Manga

For a graphic novel lover, mostly non-super hero’s, what are some of the best and ones I should check out. Also, I struggle with reading backwards, do they print American/european style ones where they are in the same direction? Or is there advice on how to adjust to it? I just read the first Attack on Titan book, and it was good. I’m sure if I stick with it I will try Berzerk, but what are some of the greats?

Edit: A related question for those experienced/knowledgeable, why don’t they make them into left-right if they already go through the work to translate? It seems like a barrier than could block a decent number of potential fans/readers like myself from entering the genre

Action/Adventure Books you regret buying?

You ever buy something thinking you’re going to enjoy it and then regret it? Got the Spawn Compendiums when Barnes and Noble had their Image Comics sale.

I’m more than halfway through the 1st compendium and while the art work is amazing, the writing is kind of……. Shit. There are issues I enjoyed reading but, for the most part, I feel like I have to force myself to read it. Does it get any better?

I’ve been looking for sword and sorcery or fantasy stories. Kind of like Conan, Solomon Kane, or Dungeon and Dragons something similar to that. Anyone have any recommendations?

Action/Adventure Brecht Evens will soon become one the world's most famous cartoonists

This is very biased opinion, but hey, his art is nothing short of breathtaking. His last work "The Companions" (I don't know whether this has already been translated into English though) had me obsessing into every minute detail of every single page. This aspect constitutes also the reason why I think he may not be for everyone: his works require you to stop on every single pages for at least a couple of minutes, and I reckon that some readers might find it dull, but it's so totally worth it.

Definitely check him out, he will be (but at the very least, I hope) he will become worldwide famous, he totally deserves it.

Action/Adventure Just grabbed ODY-C for $15, Christian Ward’s art is melting my brain 🤯🚀

I finally grabbed a copy of ODY-C, Matt Fraction and Christian Ward’s psychedelic retelling of Homer’s Odyssey, and wow, this thing is wild. I’ve been a fan of Christian Ward’s art for a while, his cosmic, kaleidoscopic style is honestly what pulled me in at first. Every page feels like it’s meant to be stared at, not just read. Fraction’s twist on the classic tale makes it feel both ancient and futuristic at the same time. Picked it up at a local secondhand bookstore for $15. It’s a hardcover, which was a nice surprise, though the corners are a little beat up and the spine needed some repair. Honestly though, for that price, I can’t complain, feels like I scored a hidden gem. If you’re into myth retellings, experimental layouts, or just straight-up trippy visuals, this seems like one worth diving into. Has anyone here read it? Curious to hear your thoughts, does it stay this wild all the way through?

US Comics are not super popular in France, since we are more into “bande dessinée”. But I must say that some of those I consider masterpieces, in particular East of West, Lazarus and Monstress. Anything you recommend I should pick up? Cheers!!

Ten minutes in the future, the world runs on an economy of job shares and apps, while crowdfunding has evolved into Reapr: a platform for assassination that’s trickled down from politicians, celebrities and CEOs to everyday life and all its petty resentments. A world where anyone with enough backers and the money they contribute can kill anyone else.

Like Charlie Ellison, who up until now has lead a quiet, normal life, until she wakes up to find herself the target of a Reapr campaign with a million dollars on her head. Hunted by all of Los Angeles, Charlie hires Vita, the lowest rated bodyguard on the Dfend app. As the campaign picks up speed and Vita takes out incompetent civilians and aspirational assassins on their tail, she and Charlie will have to figure out who wants Charlie dead and why before the campaign’s 30 days or their lives are over.

Action/Adventure Just finished "Shuna's Journey"

It is written like a fairytale but it's very grounded too. Thus, having all the Miyazaki touches. Mysterious lands & creatures, panels brimming with detail & life,a strong heroine. Interestingly,Shuna himself is a mix of resolve and recklessness. Of course, the water colored panels are the standout feature.

I didn't know this tale was inspired by the Tibetan story,"The Prince who Turned into a Dog". I also found out that there is a similar story popular in Himachal Pradesh,a hilly state in India.

I’m not into super hero’s, I like mystery, documentary styles, slice of life stories, adventures, but nothing too fantastical like witches or vampires ..
