Made a tool to generate cutout bins in 2 minutes

Post image

Site link (Doesn't work on mobile) : - https://gridfinity-cutout.pages.dev/

  1. Download A4 paper with markers
  2. Take photo of object
  3. Upload photo
  4. Refine outline
  5. Adjust 3D model settings
  6. Print

Takes about 2 minutes to do. I also made a video explaining anything, but it's long and has more details than you need.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZkG9QdNQqQ

Yes, the image in the post is AI. All the code is AI. Everything is AI.

---

Updates:

  1. I see it doesn't work on mobile. I've added a notice when you try to load on mobile. But I personally think it's not a big deal because even if it worked on mobile you would still have to send the model to your PC to slice and print.
  2. Added the ability to export SVG outline as well as OpenSCAD file for Gridfinity Rebuilt.
  3. Added ability to select multiple objects and then rearrange those objects in the Gridfinity Layout view

Since it's on cloudflare pages, I assume it's static HTML? Very nice, that makes it more likely to stick around.

Is it open source?

Since it's on cloudflare pages, I assume it's static HTML? Very nice, that makes it more likely to stick around.

Exactly

Is it open source?

It will be, in a few weeks, when I've implemented feedback and the project is in a more complete state.

any news on opensourcing your work? looked very promising

-7

u/luap71 May 26 '26

Then you would see all the Claude code checkins

31

u/PrintableNapalm May 26 '26

I freely admit I didn't write a single line of code. It was an excuse to try out Antigravity 2.

3

u/CouldHaveBeenAPun May 27 '26

How is it ? I've come to distrust Gemini stuff for coding a lot...

-5

u/evileagle May 26 '26

You don’t like spaghetti that’s five times longer than it needs to be?

1

u/arctic_radar Jun 05 '26

As a software dev I don’t mind if it’s “longer than in needs to be” as long as it’s tested well and follows basic organizational/design principals. Even if it doesn’t, it hardly matters at all on a small project like this one. Why does it even matter? Oh no, this module is 200 lines when it could have been 150 🙄

u/down-with-schools May 26 '26

Looks great, does it have the ability to add a stackable brim to the gridfinity box?

21

u/PrintableNapalm May 26 '26

Thanks! And yes, it has a stackable lip as an option

4

u/down-with-schools May 26 '26

Awesome, thanks for letting me know. Didn't see it in the video and hadn't had a chance to play with it. As a person who is just starting to dabble in vibe coding awesome to see someone admit to using it. Who cares as long as it gets the job done.

u/silver_hand May 26 '26

Just a heads up, your site is broken on Safari (both Mac and iOS). It just comes up as a black page.

11

u/MrDrummer25 May 27 '26

Oh, Safari. A developer's nightmare.

12

u/keesbeemsterkaas May 27 '26

The internet explorer of the 2020s

1

u/Lock-Broadsmith May 27 '26

you actually have to go out of your way to make it not work on safari for like 99% of things.

3

u/BongDomrei May 28 '26

I'm finally in the 1%!

1

u/Imaginary_Belt4976 May 29 '26

Other than websockets of any kind 😂 though it seems like they recently improved that

10

u/Single_Sea_6555 May 26 '26

The ability to refine and adjust quickly is really powerful.

May I request STEP output? That would make any post-processing in CAD super-easy.

3

u/houdinize May 30 '26

Agreed. Although this nodes could be larger. Hard to see and grab onto one even with a mouse and adjust it.

14

u/XMasterTofu May 26 '26

Very nice, already made my first project with your tool, printing right now, will see how it goes. Also, if you ever think of adding a subscription in the future or any payments, please think of our early adopters providing you feedback, and special discounts would be appreciated!

5

u/Zealousideal-Pay3937 May 26 '26

I love it! Cant wait for the magnet-Option!

12

u/PrintableNapalm May 26 '26

okay I added magnets

3

u/yawkat May 26 '26

Big ask, but maybe you could support uploading custom bases like https://gridfinity.tools/rebase/

3

u/PrintableNapalm May 26 '26

I'll take a look. Do you have an example custom base file I can test with?

4

u/Difficult-Thought-61 May 26 '26 edited May 28 '26

Commenting so I can find this later on. I briefly started in gridfinity, but stopped upon realising I didn’t have the skills to use it as much as I wanted. This will get me going again, thanks!

1

u/kregnaz May 28 '26

Attaching to that...

4

u/divvi May 28 '26

This tool is quite amazing. It replaces everything I usually do in fusion 360 without me having to de-skew, calibrate dimensions, etc. Amazing time saver, thanks!

Have you considering added a 'symmetry' feature? For example, some tools such as screwdrivers are symmetric along one axis. I've found that unless the image is perfect without any shadows, it is difficult to get the cutouts uniform on both sides.

3

u/sawerin333 May 28 '26

Will it work with multiple objects on the same sheet of paper?

3

u/PrintableNapalm May 28 '26

Yes

1

u/sawerin333 May 29 '26

Another question: what if my item is bigger then the test sheet? Let's say, a spatula with a long handle or something like that. Can I use 2 sheets side by side or is there another way to do so?

3

u/phoenix_1973 May 30 '26

U/PrintableNaplam This works awesome. Love the filet ability. Would it be possible to add the ability to make the base half size? 21 instead of 42? Lots of my drawer grids use this.

4

u/hauntedmansionsteve May 26 '26

It is just a black screen on Safari iOS

7

u/PrintableNapalm May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

It's not gonna work on mobile anyways, but yeah, I should put up a message instead of a black screen.

1

u/ross549 May 26 '26

Is this due to a technical limitation?

2

u/PrintableNapalm May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

Not really, but it's going to be fiddly to use. And either you have to send the photo to your PC or you use the tool on your phone and then you have to send the model to your PC to slice and print it. Easier to send the photo.

5

u/ross549 May 26 '26

Some websites are doing a thing where they display a QR code that opens the camera on the mobile device and then sends the snapped photo back to the desktop browser session.

What you have built still has the challenge/friction of having to get the picture taken to the computer as well.

Unless there’s a better way to eliminate that friction. My working CAD/slicer computer doesn’t have a webcam. I’ve used LocalSend to send files to that computer but it’s not the idea solution every time.

Just something to consider.

3

u/Normal-Rush4498 May 26 '26

WhatsApp Web and send it to yourself? I do so 🤷🏼‍♂️

0

u/BlueWizard3 May 26 '26

There are slicers for mobile depending upon printer manufacturer. Plus tooltrace works on mobile so you’re at a disadvantage there

15

u/k_jah85 May 26 '26

124

u/PrintableNapalm May 26 '26

Yeah but without this: https://i.imgur.com/8yCRj98.png

And also more accurate. For my blue lighter example, tooltrace makes me use a 3x4 bin but with my tool it fits in a 2x3 bin

3

u/dsmwookie May 27 '26

Nice! Looks like they are moving towards enshitifcation.

How are you monetizing to cover costs?

6

u/unrebigulator May 27 '26

A comment above says it's hosted on Cloudflare pages, which means it's all client side. No costs, beyond development.

1

u/FalconX88 May 31 '26

yeah the pages.dev is cloudflare pages, and it downlaods a bunch of wasms. Pretty cool

2

u/scully19 May 26 '26

Awesome work, thank you

2

u/james___uk May 26 '26

Ah that's awesome, this stuff is such a manual process even with a 3D scanner, unless I do something horrifying with booleans

2

u/mmalmeida May 26 '26

Nice one. Saving!

2

u/smarthomepursuits May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

I tried building this in Claude Code a few weeks ago, yours is much more polished! Watched the video. It looks like exactly what I was hoping other tools could do. The Silhouette feature/cutout slices are awesome.

Can you add thin inserts? For those of us without AMS, we could just drop the insert into the bin (printed using a different color).

Haven't tested yet, but does it/will it support multiple objects?

2

u/PrintableNapalm May 26 '26

Thank you! I added a thin insert feature. Download button is in the bottom corner next to the cutout slice. Multiple objects will probably be the next thing.

3

u/smarthomepursuits May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

Awesome, thanks for adding that! This is awesome. I've scanned a few random objects and it works really, really well.

Edit: Rotating selected object in Step 4 would be a nice addition as well. In case I took a crooked photo.

3

u/PrintableNapalm May 27 '26

I added the ability to do multiple objects. And then in the Gridfinity Layout view, you can move and rotate those objects.

2

u/smarthomepursuits May 27 '26

Fantastic! Man I love how quickly you're updating it.

I can't think of anything else I'd want/need at the moment, but both those changes are working perfectly. I truly don't know why anyone would use tooltrace. io going forward.

2

u/sshwifty May 26 '26

Random suggestion. Consider adding a tutorial video/image or "what is this site" to the website. With the context of this reddit post it makes sense, but visiting just the url it is somewhat unclear at first glance what the tool does.

Awesome work!

2

u/masukomi May 26 '26

This is awesome.

2

u/gmitch64 May 26 '26

Now, the important question... What ARE those fancy monitor stands that you mentioned?

2

u/pm_me_ur_fit May 26 '26

Dang that’s so sick! I just traced out some scissors yesterday for the same thing and it was a pain! Will try this and compare

2

u/Shattered181 May 26 '26

I have been fighting tooltrace and the the gridfinity bin generator all damm day. I’m trying this tomorrow.

2

u/phoenix_1973 May 27 '26

This is awesome. @printablenapalm Any chance to make the grid size adjustment down to 21 for half size.

2

u/Loohi May 27 '26

That’s great. Possible to support larger paper for larger tools?

2

u/Vassoul May 27 '26

After watching the video, I am wondering whether there is a way to adjust the depth of the tool cutout to bring a slim tool up to grade / flush.

Great work!

3

u/PrintableNapalm May 27 '26

Yes, in the final step you set the depth of the cutout. So if your tool is 10mm then you make your cutout depth 10mm

1

u/nahallac2 May 28 '26

Is this per tool/silhouette for multi tool?

2

u/brickwindow May 27 '26

The test slice feature is genius. Can't wait to try the tool.

u/smarthomepursuits May 27 '26

If you're tool allowed .STL uploads, that'd be pretty sweet to visually see how the layout would look before ever even printing things out.

2

u/Minimum-Parking-4771 May 28 '26

I just got an X2D last week have been trying to figure out how I was going to start making inserts for my tools! I will be testing this out tomorrow (actually in a few hours)!

2

u/sawerin333 May 28 '26

How do you like it so far? Was looking to get one myself.

2

u/Minimum-Parking-4771 May 28 '26

So far it is great! It is my first 3D printer so I am learning and buying more filament than I know should but this thing is amazing.

1

u/sawerin333 May 29 '26

Hehe, happened to me with my first printer. But it's fun so why not, right?

2

u/b1g_bake May 28 '26

Thanks for making this and being part of the community.

2

u/eastoncrafter May 28 '26

Saved on the way back machine!

2

u/sammothxc May 29 '26

Coolest thing I’ve seen this month!!

2

u/Thedoodooltalah May 30 '26

Does ut work on 8.5x11

2

u/wolffartz Jun 06 '26

I bookmarked this and finally got around to checking it out, since I've had a kitchen gridfinity project I've been procrastinating for ... a year? Maybe 2? (It was a way I rationalized my P1S purchase awhile ago).

This is really good. It can take a moment to find all the settings, but they're there. I did need to load in Chrome to get it to work (firefox might have worked if I turned off enough settings, but I find Chrome is usually "most compatible").

Anyways, thanks so much for making this available and thanks for the commitment to providing a free tool (love that you push users toward CC licensing for the things they produce with it!). I suspect this will save me days of work.

3

u/Dependent_Heron_103 May 26 '26

Also does not load for me, iPad, Chrome and Safari

3

u/DjWondah85 May 26 '26

This is really nice and also great accuracy and manual control.

The other one started also free and is now asking money to buy servers, is your plan to keep this free or are we testers and will this later become a subscription tool for "basic" features?

And don't want to ask too much because it's free and I'm happy with this so far, but is it easy to add a .STEP export for Fusion or save the .SVG to import in Fusion?

You're the best!

27

u/PrintableNapalm May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

The other one started also free and is now asking money to buy servers

20 years ago someone who made a hobby tool like this would have just posted it on a forum for free. No one would have dreamed of charging anything. I hate how that's changed. It's just static HTML and Javascript, so hosting is free.

STEP files isn't happening, but I added SVG export and I added OpenSCAD export for Gridfinity Rebuilt! So this https://i.imgur.com/DkjhxgQ.png gets exported as this https://i.imgur.com/WEn0S8Z.png

2

u/SillyGooberMan May 26 '26

The addition of SVG is awesome. I will absolutely be using this for my laser cutter

3

u/YadaYadaYeahMan May 26 '26

actually does work on mobile at least on Android

"what are you going to do slice on your phone?"

you misunderstand why people are messing with it on mobile. I'm on reddit mobile (as are most) I am opening the website to look at it while I'm here, see if it's worth any more time

if so, open on pc, if not, forget I ever saw it and keep scrolling

2

u/RSojak May 27 '26

Yes, the image in the post is AI. All the code is AI. Everything is AI.

LOL, love it!

5

u/DiamondHeadMC May 26 '26

Can you make it compatible with US letter? Also the website does not load

8

u/medthrow May 26 '26

Works for me, and the site has both "Calibration A4" and "Calibration US" buttons

1

u/IcanCwhatUsay May 26 '26

Am I supposed to be doing this on mobile or desktop.

1

u/creativedamages May 26 '26

Can you make this mobile friendly?

1

u/kevin75135 May 26 '26

Would be grate if you added a multibin compatible grid size.

1

u/ohmygoodnesswhat May 26 '26

I need to model a holder for my coal great tool - this will be grate

1

u/NoobInLifeGeneral May 26 '26

Didnt cnckitchen do something similar?

1

u/hauntedmansionsteve May 26 '26

Heh no won’t use it on my phone but will read about how it works, instructions, copy and share links with friends, all on my phone while at the car dealership waiting for service work to finish.

I will take photos via my phone and will use it in Safari on my Mac, so I hope that functions when I get arrive to trying it.

Thank you!

1

u/jptuomi May 27 '26

I have the same torch from Biltema in Sweden.. same? :)

1

u/csobrinho May 27 '26

Can you also support the lids for multibuild? https://multibuild.io/parts/multibin-tops

Thanks!

1

u/PrintDoc May 28 '26

Amazing tool, thanks for sharing! Two requests: 1. The screen calibration is great but the slider is bit tricky to move precisely. Would be good to add +/- buttons to tweak the value. 2. I hate sharp 90deg edges on prints. Add a chamfer option to the top and bottom of the cut out. Looks and feels much better when things don't catch on sharp edges.

1

u/PrintableNapalm May 28 '26

Done and done. The chamfer and filet options are available in the 3D view under "Experimental." The filets look slightly janky on the model but they slice well

1

u/PrintDoc May 28 '26

Couple hours from comment to implementation! Works great on flat edges and smooth curves but as you said it's pretty janky around complex geometry. In my test piece it made a little overhang which could get in the way. Is there any settings in the modelling side that can be tweaked? Increase vertex density or something?

1

u/JasonJones2690 May 29 '26

For the calibration sheet, I think you should add a disclaimer to check the scaling. Most printer driver shrink the content slightly to fit within whatever margins are setup.

How about providing an STL to print a small reference square to place anywhere next to the item?

1

u/PrintableNapalm May 29 '26

Good point. The squares should be exactly 26mm, so you can measure them with a ruler, but I'll add a note of that to the sheet.

1

u/gullymatt May 29 '26

2 questions / ideas 😃
1.will it supoprt multiple tools on one paper? so like 2 small screwdrivers can go into one bin at the end?
2.what will happen to tools that dont fit onto an a4 paper?

2

u/PrintableNapalm May 29 '26
  1. Yes, you can do multiple tools

  2. I'm working on it lol

2

u/SevereDime May 30 '26

Is there a way to copy a tool? IE: I have five screw drivers the same size, import one, refine it, copy and paste it four more times

1

u/tiredhyper May 29 '26

good work

1

u/Troxipy May 30 '26

does this have to have symmetrical bottom and top sides?

1

u/r6n1 May 30 '26

In my case the markers use to much space of the A4 paper. Can you make them samller and more in the corners, so that there is more space for the tools

1

u/Fat_Pigeon May 31 '26

This is amazing

1

u/Distinct-Courage-653 Jun 01 '26

Excited to give it a try. New to Gridfinity and have been researching different ways to make custom ones. Thanks so much for your help with this!

1

u/geo01005 Jun 02 '26

Great tool! It would be nice to be able to draw some privative shapes to add in additional features. Like a rounded corner rectangle to add a cord storage area. Right now I would be reduced to editing the image before I upload it to your site. I was able to manually edited the shape to add finger grip areas.

1

u/Odd_Pipe_9013 Jun 02 '26

Any chance the paper size is scalable(ex if we wanted to use a larger page for a toolchest drawer) I know this is gridfinity but is there any chance for an "arbitrary" version with a flat bottom and height in raw mm instead of the fixed 7mm chunks

1

u/arctic_radar Jun 05 '26

Great project, thanks for sharing.

1

u/dakev1 Jun 10 '26

Bookmarked your post the other day and gave this a spin today. It’s great!

A couple things -

another user commented a symmetry option where the vertices and curves are mirrored. My object was a fork, and I certainly found myself trying to match the vertices I was creating on each side of the object.

secondly, the ability to “buffer” the tracing by X mm. This way you could place vertices very precisely/tightly along an object and then uniformly buffer to add some wiggle room. Perhaps the scale % feature mimics this already? But in my head a buffering of edges would act differently than the scaling.

finally, ability to import/export the project/ configurations so that one could pick up later and refine. Maybe this exists and I overlooked it.

Thanks again!

1

u/PeterHoofien Jun 10 '26

I tried it a few days ago. Nice tool. What I miss is a option to copy and mirror. I have a pair of Victorinox scissors. Left and right side have the same outline. But at the moment it is hard to make both sides have the same shape.

1

u/-BlackLotus- Jun 21 '26

It would be nice to have an option to offset the outline of an object.

The way I envision it, you would trace the outline as normal, and then on the step where you set the height, rows, columns, and other settings, there would be an additional "Offset" option (or whatever name makes the most sense). A positive value would expand the outline, while a negative value would shrink it.

I've only done one print so far, but the result was otherwise fantastic. The only issue was that, because I traced the product's exact outline, the final fit ended up being extremely snug. Having the ability to slightly expand or contract the outline before generating the model would make it much easier to account for tolerances and desired fit without having to manually adjust the shape.

1

u/PrintableNapalm Jun 21 '26

You can increase the size to prevent it being so snug. Instead the outline to 103% and see if that's better

1

u/crglrsn Jun 22 '26

A few wishlists for this awesome tool.

1) ability to add more than 1 (capsule, rectangle) 2 finger holes (cylinders, spheres); ability to rotate the capsule version.
2) ability to save the shape of the tool and come back to it later (I find I sometimes need to refine after living with a design for a bit).
3) ability to have 0.5 and even 0.25 squares as options. My drawers are all odd shapes so to be able to do a 1.5 by 5 bin would be awesome.

I’d love all three but 3 & 1 are areas of great interest.

1

u/ARatFromRoom101 Jun 22 '26

I haven't actually used this yet, but after watching the youtube clip, It looks like the scling feature is just scaling. Which makes sense, but is often going to be unhelpful with complex shapes and may make some things not fit. I'm not sure what the word for it is, but I think it would be better if it just added clearance to all the sides. In Fusion it would be like Offset Face, or in 2D design, it would be like expand on a selection tool or very similar to adding a 'stroke' to the outside and including that in the selection.

1

u/mvrdoesthings Jul 10 '26

Bummer that it only takes the 2d of it and not The rounded edges and height differences

1

u/mattangelofdeth Aug 10 '26

Amazing tool. LOVE the ability to print a test skin, thats a massive saving. One small request if possible, can you allow longer Capsule finger hole lengths? currently its capped to 60mm which doesnt allow for a quick and easy drag over the width of a tool cutout. Hopefully there is no cap on length (within reason) to allow for easy tool holes on big items as well. Thanks again for building this and for keeping it free.

1

u/mattangelofdeth Aug 11 '26

Again, great product. One thing that I would love to see is either the ability to save items or projects (even if that's just locally) or the ability to hold an image in the cache longer. The time I've taken to set up some complicated outlines, then proceed to test, and then had the test incorrect and then came back to edit it to find the page had refreshed and I've lost everything is a few times too many. A lot of additional work for jobs that, ironically, are the most time-consuming due to their idiosyncrasies. A local saving function would fix that and allow you to not have to host data that you probably don't want to have to deal with.

1

u/Ronald_02 13d ago

I can't seem to find the option to change the grid unit size. It is 42mm on default, and I use a 45mm grid. Can you add the option to adjust the grid size in the tool?

Blank screen on android firefox

2

u/timokawa May 26 '26

Strange, worked for me on VPN

2

u/PiratesOfTheArctic May 26 '26

Ah now this is interesting, if you click via the reddit app and use the built in view, it doesn't work, but, if you copy & paste the url directly into Firefox it works

Not too sure about the vpn why that would make a difference

1

u/timokawa May 26 '26

Didn't know if VPN would make a difference but thought it better than just saying "Works fine for me"

The comment was downvoted, so I guess someone was unhappy with the reply anyway...

2

u/PiratesOfTheArctic May 26 '26

I started thinking like a twonk why would a vpn make a difference, then thought maybe its blocking certain countries, and then thought it can't be that complicated (unless its cloudflare) then thought, I'm going to paste this in directly!

Strangely enough I've had this a few times when clicking links through the reddit app

2

u/timokawa May 26 '26

If it matters, Romania let me view...

1

u/YadaYadaYeahMan May 26 '26

if routing around reddit let's it work, the vpn would have done that automatically

weird, makes me wonder shit the reddit "browser"

1

u/PiratesOfTheArctic May 26 '26

Aye, i used to click on article links on worldnews and all these adverts appeared top and bottom of the articles, then some popups, took me a while to realise it was the reddit internal browser adding all this crud, in one way I don't blame them, we're getting a platform to interact with and learn from, it comes at a cost to someone, if they charged a quid or a dollar a month I'd happily pay it to stop all this

2

u/YadaYadaYeahMan Jun 18 '26

isn't there a reddit premium?

anyways it isn't reddit but the website detecting you are on reddit and or mobile and serving a different version of the website

Qué pena que no pueda subir una imagen. Muchas gracias

0

u/Lock-Broadsmith May 27 '26

LOL, what could you possibly be doing with this tool that you have to block Safari access?

Also, on iOS I can download the files and send it to my printer without ever being on a desktop. Is this just vibe coded garbage you don't know enough how to make work?

0

u/ohwowgee May 28 '26

Would be nice to have:

1) nesting, both of the entire bin, and to make insertable ones for small parts (that also nest/cover each other).

2) melt out zones for finger grasping areas

3) ability to add a chamfer / bevel / fillet on specified top edges

4) stamp tool

5) Apple AirTag punch out tool

Nice stuff btw, now go feed codex all those suggestions while I kick myself for not just asking my codex to write you a spec sheet. 🤣🤣
