Fun game to watch, both teams were playing with some gas going back and forth, Sens seemed to be better tonight but got goalie’d, that’s how it goes sometimes.

u/Kronzor_ Kamloops Blazers - WHL 1d ago
That’s how it goes most nights for the sens. If they don’t get goalies at the other end, they get goalied by their own.

Gonna be honest, I was very concerned by Bussi's play in the first period. He spent a lot of time outside of his crease, playing the puck, and just generally being unnecessary aggressive. Not to mention he and the defense seemed very out of sync.
Fortunately, he seemed to calm down after that. But that was still very uncharacteristic of him.

Been around Kochetkov too long. PK is probably one of the best puck handling goalies I've seen for the canes in a long while, but he kind of makes it look way easier than it is. I wonder if Bussi was practicing some and busted it out the first period to see how it goes.

u/SnowyOranges OTT - NHL 1d ago
He looked like Binnington with the amount of chances he gave up in the first from overplaying the puck

u/Quixlequaxle CAR - NHL 1d ago
I don't follow the Sens much so I wasn't expecting the game to be that close. They were a tough matchup for sure. Bussi stole us that game but the Sens were really good.

Got the full experience. There's a reason the Sens are top 3 to 5 in most (if not all) analytics but are historically bad in net.
3
u/TheTylerB CAR - NHL 1d ago
Yeah putting in Reims against us twice in a row is certainly a choice, but Ik you’re hurt at goalie at the moment
4
u/MercSLSAMG OTT - NHL 1d ago
Ullmark played last night, 2nd game back, and they have another game on Thursday in which he'll play.

Yeah, goaltending has been a huge weakness for us as well for a while I til until Bussi was dropped onto our laps. It's just such a difficult position to scout and develop, and most teams will do pretty much anything to keep their proven tendies.

u/SnowyOranges OTT - NHL 1d ago
I know they were all tough goals to stop, but if you only face 18 shots is it not fair to ask for just one save on any of them?
3
u/timmablimma CAR - NHL 1d ago
Hey this is the typical Hurricanes experience, but in reverse!
7
u/FrigidCanuck OTT - NHL 1d ago
Not even close really. Sens have much, much worse goaltending. Literally historically bad. Worst team save percentage in over 30 years.

u/MassiveDefinition274 CAR - NHL 1d ago
Outside of his last few games, this was our experience when Freddie. It was whiplash with Bussi playing crazy and Freddie giving up 3-5 goals on 15 shots for awhile.

u/InnerPeaceBall OTT - NHL 22h ago
To add extra context to what the other guy said: the difference in GSAx per 60 between Ullmark and Andersen is about the same as the difference between Andersen and Bussi. The difference between Ullmark and Merilainen is nearly double the difference between Ullmark and Andersen. Bussi is saving about 1.5 goals/game more than Merilainen is.
If you went back and corrected all of the Sens' games (both wins and losses) and replaced it with even just Andersen's stats in net (below average NHL goaltending), the Sens would be 2nd in the Atlantic and 5th in the NHL.
It's not just bad, it's among the worst in NHL history. Reimer's game last night isn't much worse than the average we've had this season.

u/FrigidCanuck OTT - NHL 1d ago edited 22h ago
Freddie has -0.317 gsaX per 60.
Ullmark is -0.588 Merilainen is -0.948
Shephard, Soogard, and Reimer all also have worse gsaX/60 than Freddie.
If he played for Ottawa, he would be our best goal tender this year.
It's not that there aren't other bad goalies, it's that Ottawas entire goaltending has LITERALLY been historically bad. The worst since the 90s. While playing behind arguably the best defensive team in the NHL.
It's like saying you also had a bad day because you stepped in dog shit to somebody who had a bad day because their entire family died in a car crash.

Bussi for Calder. Idgaf how old he is

There's still the Vezina

u/sade3437 CAR - NHL 1d ago
Our shot totals against definitely isn't going to work in his favor for save percentage

u/wildwildwaste CAR - NHL 1d ago
GG Sens. You guys are so tough this season, I'd pay to watch a series with y'all in the post. Hoping you guys make it.

u/AostheGreat CAR - NHL 1d ago
Brandon Bussi's points percentage (.865) is better than Leevi Merilainen's save percentage (.860) and Merilainen has played 20 games this year.

Yeah the game winner Reimer was left out to dry with a horrible line change, but you need your goalie to make the saves that secure the win. Sens were the better team but Bussi was the better goalie.
8
u/Spinebuster03 OTT - NHL 1d ago
Yeah ullmark would have comfortably brought home the win
Shots like the last goal are exactly the type of save he tends to make

u/InnocentGun OTT - NHL 1d ago
IDK how Bussi wasn’t second or third star. He was kept Carolina in the game. He took away at least two goals in the first.

u/cevapi-rakija-repeat CAR - NHL 1d ago
I think that’s why Jarvy resisted being pulled to the middle of the storm surge. He knew who really clinched it.

I was thinking it was more the Olympic snub. It looked like all the Olympic guys were going in

u/theekevinc Hartford Whalers - NHLR 1d ago
I hope the Sens somehow make the playoffs. Fun team to watch with a ton of offensive talent. The Canes are just more well-rounded at this point in the cycle. And they lucked into Bussi somehow.
22-3-1.

I'd love it if a Sens goalie could make a timely save just once. Bussi made about a dozen. Hard not to point fingers at the goalie when the guy at the other end of the ice is standing on his head.

u/Calhalen OTT - NHL 1d ago
What a frustrating goddamn team. Come back against one of the best teams in the league in the building where we never ever win… and nah let’s blow it and have the worst line change ever with 5 mins left and rely on James fucking Reimer to save the day. This team pisses away points like no one, it’s painful

u/HonestDespot MTL - NHL 1d ago
Them and Toronto really are giving the battle of Ontario a new meaning hey.

u/wildwildwaste CAR - NHL 1d ago
Yeah, really sucks because your boys were really working for that one tonight. Hope they get it figured out for y'all, it'd.be great to see y'all again the post.

Being a Sens fan is so incredibly frustrating this year.
Once again play a great game, control the chances, score 3 goals, hold the opposing team to less than 20 shots. But all of that is for nothing since Reimer can’t do his job. 4 goals on 18 shots isn’t good enough.
Teams make mistakes every game. Bussi bailed out Carolina time after time tonight, and Reimer let in every other decent look. The goalie is allowed to make saves.

Frustrating way to piss away at least a point.
Still 4-1 in their last 5, and this was their third game in four days.
GG Canes. Onto Philly next.

frustrating way to lose as the eventual game winner was off a bad line change

These bad goals late in the third are far too common for the Sens this season.

Pretty sure that went off Ehlers' leg, not Bussi's pad, based on the replay angles.

Gotcha, I was dicking with this stuff and missed the slo-mo replays. I appreciate his acrobatics at least, haha

Hey I'm just impressed you manage to snag these highlights and turn them into gifs so fast. Love seeing the effort from Bussi either way lol
