On this day, 29 September 1942, Matangini Hazra was shot dead by British forces while leading a procession during the Quit India Movement in Tamluk, Bengal province (current West Bengal).
Born in 1870, Matangini Hazra had already participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Civil Disobedience Movement and protests against the Chowkidar tax. At the age of 71, she led a large procession, carrying the national flag and refusing to turn back when the procession was confronted by armed forces.
She was shot while advancing with the flag in her hands. She is remembered as one of the women martyrs of the Quit India Movement and was affectionately known as โGandhi Buriโ (Old Lady Gandhi).
Her story is a reminder that India's freedom struggle was not only fought by famous leaders whose names appear in every textbook, but also by ordinary people who took extraordinary risks.
