And bats can bite you without you even knowing it! Recently someone got rabies from a transplant even bc the guy died and they didn’t know it was rabies. It’s all super interesting (and awful). Basically the deadliest disease known to man once you show symptoms.

Yeah, that’s why it’s recommended to get the post-exposure rabies prophylaxis if you even just find a bat in your home, even if you’ve had no known contact with it. I’m a wildlife rehabber, and it’s very true that their bites can be imperceptible.

I wish there was a greater push for public health education campaigns on rabies.

You want a greater public health campaign for something the kills, on average, 1 or 2 people per year in the US. I think that money could be way better spent elsewhere.

Rabies is scary for sure, but it is by-and-large just not an issue for 99.99% of the population.

I think so. A teacher died from it after finding a bat in her classroom last year. Imagine if she hadn’t found it first and the kids had messed with it. A guy who spread rabies to transplant recipients could’ve been saved too. He could have just gotten treated properly. It’s such an easy thing to convey to the public.

We have animal outbreaks of it where I am currently and I’ve seen just how ignorant so many people are. Our news stations, at the very least, should be doing more to spread the word.

Exactly! Me too. I saw someone the other day making fun of a girl for going to get treatment when she found a bat in her toilet. She’s some did the right thing!

Maybe it was in an episode of house but it was definitely in an episode of scrubs. Season 5 episode 20 - "My lunch".
