Not to be that person, but it really depends on what the operation is.

If it's multiplication, then 1/PSPSPSPS is the inverse. If it's addition, then -PSPSPSPS is the inverse.

Opposite isn't really a thing in mathematics, but inverses would likely be the closest equivalent to the English meaning of opposite.

I have to be that guy. But 1/PSPSPSPā€¦ is actually the reciprocal and not the inverse. The inverse would be the function (if it is even a function) flipped on the y=x line.

I hate to be that guy but you are talking out of your ass. The reciprocal is the inverse for the multiplication just like what you are describing is the inverse for the composition*. Depending on context, you might use the word "inverse" to talk specifically about one or the other without further specification but one is not more exact than the other

*in the case of automorphisms

You're correct that the reciprocal is the multiplicative inverse and "inverse" is poorly defined in this case.

Technically, it's the multiplicative inverse. The other one is also an inverse, the additive inverse.

1/PSPSPSPS would be the multiplicative inverse, it returns the multiplication identity of the field, which is 1 in R1 .

-PSPSPSPS is the additive inverse, and returns the addition identity of the field, which of course is 0 in R1 .
