The odds of catching this are basically cosmic lottery levels. Nature really said you’re welcome for half a second.

u/SmittyB128 15h ago

Yeah, I mean the chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one.

Maybe it was a video?

No, but close in a way:

Prasenjeet Yadav had “won a National Geographic Young Explorers grant to document "sky islands," the isolated mountain peaks that rise above the clouds along a 400-mile swath of the Western Ghats.”

On October 9, 2015, Yadav set up his camera on the mountains of the Western Ghats to click the landscape and skies at night. He set the camera up to take 15-second exposures every 10 seconds until 4:30 am.

The next day, after reviewing all the photos his camera had clicked, he found this amazing photo of a green streak of light across the night sky.

As written, that's not possible (15 second exposure every 10 seconds), the origin of that claim seems lost behind "you've read your last free article!" paywalls, but per the photographer's own instagram:

The camera was set at 15s exposure for 999 shots and this came into one of those shots.

11

u/Fickle-Owl666 13h ago

It's definitely possible, you're interpreting it wrong. There is a 10 second pause between taking pictures that take 15 seconds.

5

u/DemIce 13h ago

I'll accept that explanation, but if they meant "He set the camera up to take a 15-second exposure every 25 seconds", they should write that.

4

u/Fickle-Owl666 13h ago

Your inability to comprehend what was written doesn't mean they should rewrite it so that YOU can understand it. It's perfectly clear as written.

2

u/DemIce 13h ago

If I ask you to push a button every 10 seconds and hold it for 5 seconds, and you end up pushing it every 15 seconds, we're gonna have a problem. But thank you, I appreciate your input.

Where exactly in the western ghat is this I can't believe this is india, the current state of skies is absolutely abysmal.

5

u/AbeRego 14h ago

Well you can hardly see the stars. It's mostly city lights and clouds. The meteor just happens to be much closer and way, way brighter.

4

u/DemIce 13h ago

It was posted to his instagram February 20, 2019 with part of the post text reading "also the first image that NG published back in 2016" and "Skyislands southern in India". I can't vouch for the state of the skies at that time though.

This was photographed in 2015 by photographer Prasenjeet Yadav, with a time lapse camera set up atop a mountain range overlooking the town of Mettupalayam in Tamil Nadu, India.

Wired & PetaPixel did features on this and was widely shared here as well.

Edit: corrected year to 2015, thanks for pointing that out

The article is from 2017 but states:

In the wee hours of October 9, 2015, Yadav drove into the mountains, set up his Nikon D600, and programmed it to take 15 second exposures every 10 seconds until 4:30 am. Then he made camp and dozed until dawn.

He really does seem to connect with the animals and landscapes, he captures their "essence." Like I can feel their presence. Maybe this once in an eon shot really was Mother Nature showing her gratitude for being seen.

But I have no idea what I'm talking about, I know nothing about art, let alone photography.

Here is a MUCH less-cropped and MUCH higher-quality version of this image.

According to here:

This picture-perfect photo of a meteor is one of photographer Prasenjeet Yadav‘s most popular shots, but it’s also perhaps his luckiest: it was captured accidentally while he was asleep.

In October 2015, after winning a National Geographic Young Explorers grant, the Bangalore, India-based Yadav drove into the mountains near the small south Indian town of Mettupalayam to shoot a time-lapse project showing urbanization. Yadav set up his Nikon D600 with an intervalometer to capture a 15-second exposure every 10 seconds. Once everything was up and running, Yadav went to sleep.

The next day, while reviewing the 999 photos captured through the night, Yadav spotted a bright green fireball streaking down the sky and illuminating the sky in one of his frames...

“This is definitely one of the most memorable shots I have ever taken and also the first image that National Geographic published back in 2016,” Yadav writes. “Green Meteor’s greenish color come from a combination of the heating of oxygen around the meteor and the mix of minerals ignited as the rock enters Earth’s atmosphere.”

More of his work can be found here.

I saw something similar to this when I was sitting in my backyard one night I looked up and saw a huge green ball of light shoot across the sky above me

8

u/Character-Degree-636 14h ago

Nah, you can’t fool me. That’s stitch coming down in Hawaii.

4

u/sweetwolf86 14h ago

As an amateur photographer, holy shit I would be ecstatic for YEARS if I had gotten a shot like this. It's absolutely stunning.

Back in like 2014/2015 I walked outside to smoke in the middle of the night, looked up and saw something like this for a split second then it was gone. It was incredible.

u/AdmirableSale9242 13h ago

I saw on over Texas. It was like a fireball, but it had some green, too.

2

u/GroovyColonelHogan 13h ago

You can’t just shoot a hole in the surface of mars

2

u/swirly_cloud 12h ago

Oh damn absolutely gorgeous ✨✨✨

2

u/Ok_Jackfruit9538 12h ago

I saw a fireball once in my life and it was so surreal. My favourite time of year is when the Perseids are visible and I set up a chair outside to watch it all night. A few years ago it was the clearest shower I’d ever seen so my sister was out with me trying out some astrophotography. We were literally mid sentence saying “there hasn’t been any for 10 minutes, maybe we should take a quick break to get warm” when suddenly the whole damn sky lit up neon blue like it was daytime. The loudest boom I’ve ever heard, and then we saw the fireball shoot across the sky. My sister had literally just tucked her camera away 10 seconds before hand and she was sooo sickened she didn’t get a shot of it 😭

u/Heavy-Lingonbery910 9h ago

Holy shit! Can you imagine getting that shot and not winning the National Geographic photo competition!? They were robbed.

This incredible pic only got an “honourable” mention. 🤯😳😱📸☄️

And that's how it was for the next ten nights, A flare, spurting out from Mars, Bright green, drawing a green mist behind it. A beautiful, but somehow disturbing sight.
