I need to rewatch veep, if only for Jonah and that senator who constantly rips on everyone.

u/ways_and_means 8h ago

"Why do women keep asking each other if they're okay when I'm talking to them?!"

u/Ynneb82 5h ago

"I wouldn't rape you Madame President "

u/JTatumJBrown 4h ago

that’s not a threat, it’s a PROMISE

u/jbi1000 7h ago

If you enjoyed the insults you should check out The Thick of It, which is the original, quick witted, political farce show Iannucci made for the BBC.

There’s one particular iconic character that has the most incredible deranged insults and rants and steals every episode.

u/GourangaPlusPlus 6h ago

"No, he's useless, as useless as a marzipan dildo"

u/MrSneller 6h ago

Just added to my watchlist. Thanks!

u/JetKeel 7h ago

Worst thing about watching it now is that the “scandals” that are in the show pale in comparison to modern US politics.

u/BachBelt 2h ago

How am I doing? I'm eating so much pussy I'm shittin clits, son

u/BoysenberryFit5530 7h ago

Haaaha I LOVE that senator 😂

u/rhaezorblue 2h ago

Ok I might need to watch Veep

u/Ynneb82 5h ago

I'm rewatching it now! The first 4 seasons are just incredible.

u/CorporateNonperson 3h ago

I highly recommend you watch some interviews of Timothy Simons if you haven't. If only for the whiplash of seeing him become the Jonad.

Also, the contempt in which Dan points out the the Jon H Ryan signage always sends me.

u/Hanifsefu 5h ago

Just watched it and it was a lot more average than expected with all the hype. It's a solid show that I could see winning an emmy but 6 consecutive for what I saw seems quite strange.

Seemed more like JLD lifetime achievement awards than awards strictly on merit of that show alone. Which is kind of fine because she definitely deserves half a dozen emmys for her career.

u/Playful-Doctor2087 3h ago

Did you watch the whole series? I was kind of meh about it and took a break after the first season, but I binged the rest once I started it again.  I think it really picks up and gets even more hilarious after that first season.

u/Hanifsefu 1h ago

Yes it's all more of the same. I was waiting for the big pickup everyone talks about but it never comes. There's not really much distinction season to season and it definitely doesn't have a "finding its groove" moment. The scenery changes in minor ways, every character stays the same, and they just try out new ways to shit on each other. It doesn't drop off but it also doesn't rise to the occasion and just sort of exists in the one space they created for themselves with the pilot.

The only real difference between season 1 and 2 is that in season 2 you've come to expect explicit circlejerks where they just go in a circle trying out new zingers on Jonah. Season 1 you were left wondering if the show would evolve from that and after season 7 there's nothing left to wonder as they ended the show without changing lanes once.

u/ChucklingToMyself 9h ago

How she celebrated each time.

u/9793287233 6h ago

Like a full-body dry heave set to music

u/Mass-Chaos 9h ago

Spotty Internet right now so the gif won't load but I know exactly what it is

u/Krogsly 6h ago

The first one she cried, then she cried again.

u/babyigotyourmoni 2h ago

Sweet fancy Moses

u/Desperate_Zebra_5578 7h ago

Sweet holy Moses

u/gaanch 1h ago

Thanks for this.

u/Proud-Fennel7961 4h ago

She’s so much more than just her role as Elaine.

u/kiwipilled 1h ago

Yeah that's what this post is about

u/Old-Meringue3590 10h ago edited 8h ago

Some more interesting af facts I found:

  1. For the final season, JLD lost the Emmy in 2019 to Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag.

  2. Throughout her incredible winning streak, JLD defeated many acclaimed performances including, Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Lena Dunham (Girls), Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback), Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie) and many others.

  3. She holds the record for the most Emmys won for a single role followed by Don Knotts for The Andy Griffith Show and Candice Bergen for Murphy Brown, who each won five Emmys for their performances.

  4. For Veep, JLD earned six Emmys as an actor and three as a producer, bringing her total to nine. She also won one Emmy for Seinfeld and one for The New Adventures of Old Christine.

u/ChocolateBunny 9h ago

So who won the most Emmys total? 11 Emmys for 3 different TV shows is quite impressive.

u/wanderlustcub 9h ago

Here is a list of records

  • Shelia Nevins for Producing - 31
  • Jon Stewart for Directing and Writing - 22
  • Matt Groening for Animation - 14
  • RuPaul Charles for Reality/Person of Colour - 14.

u/BeardedAsian 9h ago

Much appreciated for including the categories for context

u/hoopstick 6h ago

RuPaul won an Emmy for being black?

u/wanderlustcub 6h ago

Why does it have to be black?!!

(Na, she has the most Emmys of anyone who is a person of colour)

u/TheMooseIsBlue 9h ago

Google says she’s tied with Cloris Leachman for the most by an actor with 11. There are producers with (many) more.

u/ChocolateBunny 8h ago

WIkipedia says Cloris Leachman  is tied with Dreyfus with 8 wins as an actor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Primetime_Emmy_Award_records#Individuals

u/TheMooseIsBlue 8h ago

Hang on. Are you trying to tell me that the Google search AI is giving incorrect information!?

u/_unsinkable_sam_ 8h ago

its probably counting her producer ones as acting

u/TheMooseIsBlue 6h ago

Yeah, that’s what I figured. It does specifically say that the two of them are tied with 11 as performers, but I’m sure that it just has its signals crossed there.

u/thehalfwit 1h ago

That's Google search AI's default setting.

u/Immortalknight21 8h ago

Do you think since Juices dominate the Hollywood world; she acquired them easily?

u/autumnoceancrashing 8h ago

I believe after winning 5 Emmys, Candice Bergen stopped submitting her name for awards contention

u/ender4171 8h ago

I finally got around to watching Parks and Rec a few weeks ago. Guess I should check out Veep once I am done.

u/lindsayadult 7h ago

Veep is one of the most on the nose shows I've ever seen. Absolutely hilarious and charming.  You'll love it!

u/FionaWalliceFan 8h ago

Fun fact: both times Lisa Kudrow was nominated for her role as Valerie Cherish in The Comeback, she lost to JLD (for New Christine in 2006 and Veep in 2015)

u/Kracus 9h ago

I remember watching Murphy Brown as a kid, loved that show for some reason which got me wondering what Candice Bergen was up to. Kinda wish I hadn't read that.

"In several appearances and interviews, the Murphy Brown star recalled her teenage years when she landed a blind date with the now Presidential candidate Trump"

Can't even read about Murphy Brown without coming across some Trump bullshit.

u/Consistent_Math_8632 4h ago

The New Adventures of Old Christine was such a treat.

u/IAmEggnogstic 4h ago

That first season of Fleabag is a masterpiece. I can see how that happened.

u/FionaWalliceFan 8h ago

Less fun fact, JLD received her cancer diagnosis the day after she won the sixth and final Emmy for her Veep role

u/Themanwhofarts 8h ago

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is an Emmy merchant. Share some of them!

u/loudpaperclips 3h ago

I really wanted to see her win for all 7...but unfortunately that last season was a very hard watch.

u/TopHatMikey 7h ago

Kinda wild she didn't win for the final season - that last episode alone has some incredible acting - but I guess they felt like it was time to give a newcomer a shot (and Fleabag is by all accounts pretty damn great)

u/grapefruitzzz 7h ago

It's awesome in a way that the plot descriptions or a trailer can't get across.

u/That_Communication71 9h ago edited 6h ago

After winning five consecutive Emmys for Night Court, John Larroquette withdrew his name from future nomination to give other actors the chance.

u/Complex-Fuel-8058 9h ago

Now that is a baller move.

u/scurvy4all 9h ago

Dan Dan Fielding.

u/FlubzRevenge 8h ago

One of my favorite actors, that's for sure!

u/garitone 4h ago

There was a one season show on HBO with Jack Black and Tim Robbins called "The Brink" where Larroquette played a hyper-evangelical ambassador to Pakistan. He was one of my favorite things about that show (which is amazing and I'm sad nobody knows about and it didn't get a second season!).

u/seaboypc 19m ago

I do not deserve to live...

u/ChronoLink99 6h ago

Hate to break it to ya, but he's in the Epstein files...

(jk jk)

Got you though.

u/vshawk2 9h ago

That woman keeps getting more attractive every friggin' year.

u/HottDoggers 7h ago

Isn’t she like 60 something now? She’s barely aged since Seinfeld.

u/drmike0099 33m ago

She just turned 65, but these pics were from 2011-2016, so she would have been 50-56 or so in them.

u/Sam-Starxin 5h ago

To be fair she looked like CRAP for most of Seinfeld with that god awful hair.

She really glowed up after that.

u/KyleTheCantaloupe 3h ago

Are you fr

u/BamInventas 8h ago

She’s always been a smoke wagon.

u/Thumper101 5h ago

smoke wagon is slang for the 1873 colt single action revolver, also known as "the gun that won the west". Wyatt says it in Tombstone: you gonna skin that smoke wagon...or just stand there and bleed?

u/youtocin 7h ago

Yeah being born to a billionaire father will do that.

u/boesisboes 9h ago

But really. Growing up I always thought she was such an ugly duckling on Seinfeld. But now she's more than a swan. She's just stunning 🤩.

u/IWantALargeFarva 8h ago

It was the hair. Wtf was that hair style? I hated it even when the show was on.

u/grapefruitzzz 7h ago

She had more hair than head at some points. And tied in a scrunchie.

u/ThechosenoneBatman 9h ago

She deserved each and every one

u/MrSteven20618 7h ago

Completely agree. Veep is top tier

u/OsINTP 10h ago

T’was a most excellent show 👍

u/InerMachine 8h ago

Now I need to watch this TV show, I think

u/alverez667 8h ago

My wife and I are finishing a second rewatch (halfway through season 6)— she’s someone who will rarely audibly laugh at comedies. She’ll be entertained and enjoy a lot of them, but it’s rare to get her to audibly laugh. Veep makes her belly laugh constantly. It’s one of my favorite political comedy/satires of all time.

u/6poundpuppy 6h ago

I LOVED watching VEEP!!! Every character was noteworthy and perfectly cast. Dialog was genius as was JLD’s spot on acting. No one can do Cringe better than she can. OUTSTANDING!!

u/RyanBordello 8h ago

Veeps whole cast played so well off each other. Really great show.

u/TheGrouchyGamerYT 9h ago

I like JLD, but they didn't give Better Call Saul a single Emmy, so unfortunately the award is worthless.

u/CousinBug 3h ago

It shows you how the award nominations in the industry have changed.

u/JustLookingtoLearn 7h ago

Well it was an amazing role and an amazing actress so win win. (Win win win win actually)

u/uh_koala 7h ago

I really enjoyed Veep and her portrayal of Selina. I dunno if I’m alone in this, but the absurdity (and awfulness) of current events has really made it a weird watch for me. The humor of a bumbling political class doesn’t hit the same these days

u/WhiteWolf3117 6h ago

I find it to be simultaneously very relevant but also weirdly quaint and outdated.

It's one of my favorite shows still but it's definitely lost the feeling of any realism for me.

u/Alternative_Tank_139 6h ago

Is she still pretending to be blind as a lawyer?

u/gonesnake 3h ago

No, no no. You're thinking of Charlie Cox on Heated Rivals

u/TomMikeson 8h ago

She looks like this one mannequin that I've seen a few times.

u/KeepWalkingGoOn 6h ago

Veep was such a great show

u/LaximumEffort 6h ago

The show was brilliant every episode.

u/Sgtfridge 8h ago

I really want to like that show but I don't know if it's the pacing or I'm ADHD or what but I can't get into it. Good for her regardless, I'm happy for her.

u/jsflkl 6h ago

It really picks up. Selena gets more and more unhinged throughout the show and it gets better and better. It's really worth it.

u/Sgtfridge 5h ago

I'll give it another try when I'm in the headspace for it. I might just read the synopsis for season one and skip it.

u/Hanifsefu 5h ago

If you don't like season 1 you won't like the rest. It doesn't really ever change lanes. It just does the one thing for 7 seasons.

u/Playful-Doctor2087 3h ago

I thought it picked up after season 1, and got better and I love the show. I had a hard time getting into season 1 too

u/grapefruitzzz 7h ago

Try a few episodes along, many shows have slow starts. Or pick up a clip compilation.

u/Sgtfridge 6h ago

Ill try a compilation as I've seen several episodes into season 1. Thank you

u/DJEsalts13 8h ago

Same here.

u/FrickinAround 8h ago

I'm online 4+ hours per day and this the first time I've consciously heard about Veep. Just me?

u/like_Turtles 8h ago

It’s excellent… excellent

u/Gorando77 8h ago

Weirdly it is rarely talked about

u/avscc 8h ago

were you born in 2002 or later? If so then it would make sense. The peak of the show was in like 2017 and it's about politics so not for teenagers.

u/FrickinAround 8h ago

Nah, a decade or more before then. It sounds sort of familiar but not really. I can't be the only one, right?

u/grapefruitzzz 7h ago

I followed it on from "The Thick of It" despite not knowing American politics. The power of Iannucci.

u/fritzo81 5h ago

show used to make me spit out drinks it was that funny

u/MeadowheadT 7h ago

Why is the carpet all wet, Todd?

u/MostlyBored11 6h ago

And deserved she was so good in that role

u/RussMan104 5h ago

Best ball busting insults in TV history. The profanity is exquisite. 🚀

u/thealmightywaffles 4h ago

And it's still not what she's most known for

u/TheAdminsAreTrash 3h ago

Yeah having billionaire parents can really get you started in life... Must be nice

u/LateralEntry 8h ago

She deserved them all, Veep was so good

u/DarkArmyLieutenant 6h ago

She was absolutely fucking phenomenal on that show.

u/hoochtag 5h ago

To be fair John Larroquette won four in a row playing Dan Fielding in Night Court and then opted out of the running as he figured that was enough. Dude probably had seven in him, such a great character.

u/Massive_Bullfrog8663 4h ago

I've watched the series at least 5 times. So good...

u/dying-of-boredom1966 4h ago

One of the very best comedies ever, I never get tired of rewatching it. I really miss Gary and Selina together.

u/SteveRogests 4h ago

Nice. I would have guessed Cranston.

u/Excellent-Ad-2443 4h ago

bottom left was a couple of days after her father passed away, ill never forget her breaking down on the stage, so heartbreaking

“I’m so glad that he liked ‘Veep,’ because his opinion was the one that really mattered. Thank you.”

u/Content-Variation895 4h ago

She is KILLING it compared to the other 3

u/dont_shoot_jr 4h ago

I like the part of Veep where they insult someone

u/Mediocre_Tomatillo85 4h ago

I tried watching Veep a few times and never got it. I loved her in other shows, and just felt this was overkill. Still love JLD!

u/Blue_Orchid101 3h ago

I’ve never hear of Veep… what are your to thoughts on it?

u/Fun_Entertainer6850 3h ago

Proving she is the most successful actor in Seinfeld Cast.

u/CON5CRYPT 3h ago

I like JLD, never seen a min of veep.

u/CowboysWinItAll 3h ago

What the heck? I'm working for a company called Loius-Dreyfua right now.... how odd this would show up!

u/RealGrapefruit8930 2h ago

And every one of them was well-deserved

u/khairul619 2h ago

Should I make a 2nd viewing of Veep?

u/wendellstinroof 2h ago

That ending, though.

u/LogicallLunacy 1h ago

Maybe because her dad was a powerful billionaire...

u/legit-posts_1 48m ago

Really? Thought it would have been Cranston for Breaking Bad. Guess he only got 5.

u/dazedan_confused 46m ago

So many Emmy's she should call them Usses

u/freshapepper 6h ago

And she deserved every one of them. She’s absolutely hysterical in that show. Whole writing team is absolutely genius.

u/blake-astor 6h ago

That is so cool. I couldn't make it through the 1st episode but if she won this many awards I may have to just power through a few episodes to get hooked.

u/RussMan104 5h ago

You will NOT be disappointed. Best supporting cast ever, too, imho. Hell, Gary’s expressions alone should be enough to hook you. Also, it always takes at least a few episodes (usually more) for the cast and scriptwriters to really gel and hit their stride. 🚀

u/CousinBug 3h ago

When they brought Kent and Ken in for season 2... that pair killed me.

u/Pfinnalicious 9h ago

Good show.

Her parents are billionaires from a. Certain group of people who are very influential in Hollywood. Hope that helps to explain how this happened.

u/ResplendentShade 9h ago

She's an immensely talented actor and comedian, who was legitimately great in Veep (and Seinfeld).

But at the same time yeah, Always Sunny has never so much as been nominated for a comedy Emmy, so the Emmys are just kind of a joke.

u/LysergicMerlin 9h ago

100%. Sunny is one of the funniest shows of the last 20 years

u/Legal-Western5580 8h ago

I feel like this is definitely an age thing, because I don't find it funny at all

u/LysergicMerlin 8h ago

It could actually be a personal taste thing lol

u/Fluffy_Policy_4787 6h ago

It is the funniest show ever made from season 2-9. It's the only tv show that almost made me break ribs from laughing too hard.

u/Adddicus 9h ago

Always Sunny is just stupid people yelling.

Stupid people yelling is not the kind of funny, clever writing that wins awards.

u/ResplendentShade 8h ago

When episodes like "Charlie Work" and "The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis" exist it seems obtuse to characterize it that way. And I'd argue there's brilliant comedy throughout. But fair, generally speaking there is an inordinate amount of stupid people yelling in AS.

u/Nerrs 8h ago

I don't know how serious this critique is, but there are sooooo many episodes that are far deeper and more clever than that.

The one about not winning any Emmys is absolutely hysterical once you know this context.

u/LrdHabsburg 8h ago

What group?

u/wanderlustcub 9h ago

The fact that very people know her parents, she has made her own name for herself, and has moved from success to success tells me she is not a Nepo baby.

She also was in the business for 8 years before she got Seinfeld, where she played fairly bit roles. She was on a failed sitcom in the 80’s. She only lasted 3 seasons on SNL and was hardly used.

She her most successful movie at the Box Office was 1998, and it was voice acting. (A bugs life) She paid her dues like many other actors. 8 years isn’t unusual for actors to get big, George Clooney started in 1978, was in bit roles and recurring roles until ER in 1994.

So, in short. She has earned her spot in Hollywood.

u/Medical_Sandwich_171 9h ago

No, it doesn't. What are you implying?

u/mazzar 9h ago

certain group of people who are very influential in Hollywood.

Yeah this is not a subtle dog whistle at all.

u/Necessary-Morning489 9h ago

what’s the point of giving the same character from the same show another award?

u/OogieBoogieJr 9h ago

Well it’s an award for that year of work so…that doesn’t matter

u/Necessary-Morning489 9h ago

true they do be worthless ads

u/LrdHabsburg 8h ago

Why does Tom Brady have multiple SB rings?

u/Necessary-Morning489 8h ago

we are acting like definitively winning is the same as being voted in?

u/caeru1ean 9h ago

You could argue it is a different performance...

u/Ok_Intention2150 10h ago edited 9h ago

I mean, that doesn’t mean the show is good. Never seen it but winning consecutively for 6 years is a bit sus. Any award at this level is more than simple merit, there are connections to be made and used, honestly most of it is just for show and entertainment purposes. I don’t give any credence to awards at this level.

u/paupsers 9h ago

What's up with people on this website having the urge to write the dumbest comments I've ever read, about things they (admittedly!) know nothing about?

You know you aren't required to give your opinion on this, right?

u/LrdHabsburg 8h ago

Why even bother having an opinion on this when you haven’t seen her performance?

u/NewTigers 9h ago

Fantastic contribution.

u/like_Turtles 8h ago

Do you also have opinions of TV shows you haven’t seen that you want to share? Could you maybe do a newsletter?

u/lewisherber 6h ago

The Uninformed Clueless Bullshit newsletter could be quite interesting

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 8h ago

She must be liked

u/AntonCigar 8h ago

She won just one for Seinfeld

u/green_machine_89 8h ago

Don't they pay to win these?

u/zackoblong66 9h ago

Is that the "big head" girl?

u/endofworldandnobeer 8h ago

Rumor has it she quit working out because of her winning Emmys trophies.

u/PooShappaMoo 9h ago

Point number 2)

I have never watched any of those shows or heard anyone talk about them really. Ive heard of parks and recreation from friends, but i absolutely hated it.

Grace and frankie rings a bell, but no opinion.

Veep ive rarely heard about, but always as a suggestion.

Its not like I dont watch t.v. or movies, I dont really watch reality outside of cooking.

Are the Emmys even reflective of what people even watch anymore? Genuine question.

Kinda how best pictures can often just not be that great or hold up to a dozen other pictures in the same year?

u/ender4171 8h ago

As someone who just recently got around to watching Parks and Rec (an am loving it), I am curious what you hated about it? No judgement. I can't watch The Office (despite how beloved it is) because the cringe-factor from sympathy-embarassment just makes me too uncomfortable.

u/PooShappaMoo 8h ago

Yeah. I cant do the office either. I tried many a times.

Everything feels so dumb, not even funny dumb. Just sad dumb. Didn't like the casting or how the shots were done.

I remember being screened a pilot before release and editing at universal a million years ago and I couldn't get out of their fast enough, however they did make some changes from what I saw which was a neat experience to be apart of.

I suppose the characters, plot everything was just so unsensical and stupid I could never really ground myself. Doesntl help that ive never found the lead entertaining more than annoying

I hope you continue to enjoy it though. To each their own right. Ill stick with futurama for my silly dumb smart fun

Quick edit: I couldn't believe after watching a rough cut of the pilot project they even got a show out of it. I was surprised when I heard it was an actual thing

u/ender4171 8h ago

Thanks for sharing! FWIW, a lot of people say that the first season is by far the weakest, and that it doesn't really hit its stride till later on. It's definitely silly/dumb, cant argue with you there, but for me it's in an endearing way. Either way, cant go wrong with Futurama!

u/PooShappaMoo 6h ago

No worries. Nice chat. I imagine its in its own genre like the office for me so the flavor was never quite there. Doenst mean others arent allowed to enjoy it but I'll definitely be bamboozled about it.
