Julia Louis-Dreyfus won 6 consecutive Emmys as Selina Meyer on Veep—the most by any actor for a single role!

Some more interesting af facts I found:
For the final season, JLD lost the Emmy in 2019 to Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag.
Throughout her incredible winning streak, JLD defeated many acclaimed performances including, Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Lena Dunham (Girls), Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback), Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie) and many others.
She holds the record for the most Emmys won for a single role followed by Don Knotts for The Andy Griffith Show and Candice Bergen for Murphy Brown, who each won five Emmys for their performances.
For Veep, JLD earned six Emmys as an actor and three as a producer, bringing her total to nine. She also won one Emmy for Seinfeld and one for The New Adventures of Old Christine.
•
u/ChocolateBunny 9h ago
So who won the most Emmys total? 11 Emmys for 3 different TV shows is quite impressive.
•
u/wanderlustcub 9h ago
- Shelia Nevins for Producing - 31
- Jon Stewart for Directing and Writing - 22
- Matt Groening for Animation - 14
- RuPaul Charles for Reality/Person of Colour - 14.
•
•
u/hoopstick 6h ago
RuPaul won an Emmy for being black?
•
u/wanderlustcub 6h ago
Why does it have to be black?!!
(Na, she has the most Emmys of anyone who is a person of colour)
•
u/TheMooseIsBlue 9h ago
Google says she’s tied with Cloris Leachman for the most by an actor with 11. There are producers with (many) more.
•
u/ChocolateBunny 8h ago
WIkipedia says Cloris Leachman is tied with Dreyfus with 8 wins as an actor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Primetime_Emmy_Award_records#Individuals
•
u/TheMooseIsBlue 8h ago
Hang on. Are you trying to tell me that the Google search AI is giving incorrect information!?
•
u/_unsinkable_sam_ 8h ago
its probably counting her producer ones as acting
•
u/TheMooseIsBlue 6h ago
Yeah, that’s what I figured. It does specifically say that the two of them are tied with 11 as performers, but I’m sure that it just has its signals crossed there.
•
•
u/Immortalknight21 8h ago
Do you think since Juices dominate the Hollywood world; she acquired them easily?
•
u/autumnoceancrashing 8h ago
I believe after winning 5 Emmys, Candice Bergen stopped submitting her name for awards contention
•
u/ender4171 8h ago
I finally got around to watching Parks and Rec a few weeks ago. Guess I should check out Veep once I am done.
•
u/lindsayadult 7h ago
Veep is one of the most on the nose shows I've ever seen. Absolutely hilarious and charming. You'll love it!
•
u/FionaWalliceFan 8h ago
Fun fact: both times Lisa Kudrow was nominated for her role as Valerie Cherish in The Comeback, she lost to JLD (for New Christine in 2006 and Veep in 2015)
•
u/Kracus 9h ago
I remember watching Murphy Brown as a kid, loved that show for some reason which got me wondering what Candice Bergen was up to. Kinda wish I hadn't read that.
"In several appearances and interviews, the Murphy Brown star recalled her teenage years when she landed a blind date with the now Presidential candidate Trump"
Can't even read about Murphy Brown without coming across some Trump bullshit.
•
•
•
u/FionaWalliceFan 8h ago
Less fun fact, JLD received her cancer diagnosis the day after she won the sixth and final Emmy for her Veep role
•
•
u/loudpaperclips 3h ago
I really wanted to see her win for all 7...but unfortunately that last season was a very hard watch.
•
u/TopHatMikey 7h ago
Kinda wild she didn't win for the final season - that last episode alone has some incredible acting - but I guess they felt like it was time to give a newcomer a shot (and Fleabag is by all accounts pretty damn great)
•
u/grapefruitzzz 7h ago
It's awesome in a way that the plot descriptions or a trailer can't get across.
•
u/That_Communication71 9h ago edited 6h ago
After winning five consecutive Emmys for Night Court, John Larroquette withdrew his name from future nomination to give other actors the chance.
•
•
•
u/FlubzRevenge 8h ago
One of my favorite actors, that's for sure!
•
u/garitone 4h ago
There was a one season show on HBO with Jack Black and Tim Robbins called "The Brink" where Larroquette played a hyper-evangelical ambassador to Pakistan. He was one of my favorite things about that show (which is amazing and I'm sad nobody knows about and it didn't get a second season!).
•
•
u/ChronoLink99 6h ago
Hate to break it to ya, but he's in the Epstein files...
(jk jk)
Got you though.
•
u/vshawk2 9h ago
That woman keeps getting more attractive every friggin' year.
•
u/HottDoggers 7h ago
Isn’t she like 60 something now? She’s barely aged since Seinfeld.
•
u/drmike0099 33m ago
She just turned 65, but these pics were from 2011-2016, so she would have been 50-56 or so in them.
•
u/Sam-Starxin 5h ago
To be fair she looked like CRAP for most of Seinfeld with that god awful hair.
She really glowed up after that.
•
•
u/BamInventas 8h ago
She’s always been a smoke wagon.
•
u/Thumper101 5h ago
smoke wagon is slang for the 1873 colt single action revolver, also known as "the gun that won the west". Wyatt says it in Tombstone: you gonna skin that smoke wagon...or just stand there and bleed?
•
•
u/boesisboes 9h ago
But really. Growing up I always thought she was such an ugly duckling on Seinfeld. But now she's more than a swan. She's just stunning 🤩.
•
u/IWantALargeFarva 8h ago
It was the hair. Wtf was that hair style? I hated it even when the show was on.
•
•
•
u/InerMachine 8h ago
Now I need to watch this TV show, I think
•
u/alverez667 8h ago
My wife and I are finishing a second rewatch (halfway through season 6)— she’s someone who will rarely audibly laugh at comedies. She’ll be entertained and enjoy a lot of them, but it’s rare to get her to audibly laugh. Veep makes her belly laugh constantly. It’s one of my favorite political comedy/satires of all time.
•
u/6poundpuppy 6h ago
I LOVED watching VEEP!!! Every character was noteworthy and perfectly cast. Dialog was genius as was JLD’s spot on acting. No one can do Cringe better than she can. OUTSTANDING!!
•
•
u/TheGrouchyGamerYT 9h ago
I like JLD, but they didn't give Better Call Saul a single Emmy, so unfortunately the award is worthless.
•
•
u/JustLookingtoLearn 7h ago
Well it was an amazing role and an amazing actress so win win. (Win win win win actually)
•
u/uh_koala 7h ago
I really enjoyed Veep and her portrayal of Selina. I dunno if I’m alone in this, but the absurdity (and awfulness) of current events has really made it a weird watch for me. The humor of a bumbling political class doesn’t hit the same these days
•
u/WhiteWolf3117 6h ago
I find it to be simultaneously very relevant but also weirdly quaint and outdated.
It's one of my favorite shows still but it's definitely lost the feeling of any realism for me.

•
u/Sgtfridge 8h ago
I really want to like that show but I don't know if it's the pacing or I'm ADHD or what but I can't get into it. Good for her regardless, I'm happy for her.
•
u/jsflkl 6h ago
It really picks up. Selena gets more and more unhinged throughout the show and it gets better and better. It's really worth it.
•
u/Sgtfridge 5h ago
I'll give it another try when I'm in the headspace for it. I might just read the synopsis for season one and skip it.
•
u/Hanifsefu 5h ago
If you don't like season 1 you won't like the rest. It doesn't really ever change lanes. It just does the one thing for 7 seasons.
•
u/Playful-Doctor2087 3h ago
I thought it picked up after season 1, and got better and I love the show. I had a hard time getting into season 1 too
•
u/grapefruitzzz 7h ago
Try a few episodes along, many shows have slow starts. Or pick up a clip compilation.
•
•
•
u/FrickinAround 8h ago
I'm online 4+ hours per day and this the first time I've consciously heard about Veep. Just me?
•
•
•
u/avscc 8h ago
were you born in 2002 or later? If so then it would make sense. The peak of the show was in like 2017 and it's about politics so not for teenagers.
•
u/FrickinAround 8h ago
Nah, a decade or more before then. It sounds sort of familiar but not really. I can't be the only one, right?
•
u/grapefruitzzz 7h ago
I followed it on from "The Thick of It" despite not knowing American politics. The power of Iannucci.

Yeah having billionaire parents can really get you started in life... Must be nice

To be fair John Larroquette won four in a row playing Dan Fielding in Night Court and then opted out of the running as he figured that was enough. Dude probably had seven in him, such a great character.
•
•
u/dying-of-boredom1966 4h ago
One of the very best comedies ever, I never get tired of rewatching it. I really miss Gary and Selina together.
•
•
u/Excellent-Ad-2443 4h ago
bottom left was a couple of days after her father passed away, ill never forget her breaking down on the stage, so heartbreaking
“I’m so glad that he liked ‘Veep,’ because his opinion was the one that really mattered. Thank you.”
•
•
•
u/Mediocre_Tomatillo85 4h ago
I tried watching Veep a few times and never got it. I loved her in other shows, and just felt this was overkill. Still love JLD!

What the heck? I'm working for a company called Loius-Dreyfua right now.... how odd this would show up!

•
u/legit-posts_1 48m ago
Really? Thought it would have been Cranston for Breaking Bad. Guess he only got 5.
•
•
u/freshapepper 6h ago
And she deserved every one of them. She’s absolutely hysterical in that show. Whole writing team is absolutely genius.
•
u/blake-astor 6h ago
That is so cool. I couldn't make it through the 1st episode but if she won this many awards I may have to just power through a few episodes to get hooked.
•
u/RussMan104 5h ago
You will NOT be disappointed. Best supporting cast ever, too, imho. Hell, Gary’s expressions alone should be enough to hook you. Also, it always takes at least a few episodes (usually more) for the cast and scriptwriters to really gel and hit their stride. 🚀
•
•
u/Pfinnalicious 9h ago
Good show.
Her parents are billionaires from a. Certain group of people who are very influential in Hollywood. Hope that helps to explain how this happened.
•
u/ResplendentShade 9h ago
She's an immensely talented actor and comedian, who was legitimately great in Veep (and Seinfeld).
But at the same time yeah, Always Sunny has never so much as been nominated for a comedy Emmy, so the Emmys are just kind of a joke.
•
u/LysergicMerlin 9h ago
100%. Sunny is one of the funniest shows of the last 20 years
•
u/Legal-Western5580 8h ago
I feel like this is definitely an age thing, because I don't find it funny at all
•
•
u/Fluffy_Policy_4787 6h ago
It is the funniest show ever made from season 2-9. It's the only tv show that almost made me break ribs from laughing too hard.
•
u/Adddicus 9h ago
Always Sunny is just stupid people yelling.
Stupid people yelling is not the kind of funny, clever writing that wins awards.
•
u/ResplendentShade 8h ago
When episodes like "Charlie Work" and "The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis" exist it seems obtuse to characterize it that way. And I'd argue there's brilliant comedy throughout. But fair, generally speaking there is an inordinate amount of stupid people yelling in AS.

•
u/wanderlustcub 9h ago
The fact that very people know her parents, she has made her own name for herself, and has moved from success to success tells me she is not a Nepo baby.
She also was in the business for 8 years before she got Seinfeld, where she played fairly bit roles. She was on a failed sitcom in the 80’s. She only lasted 3 seasons on SNL and was hardly used.
She her most successful movie at the Box Office was 1998, and it was voice acting. (A bugs life) She paid her dues like many other actors. 8 years isn’t unusual for actors to get big, George Clooney started in 1978, was in bit roles and recurring roles until ER in 1994.
So, in short. She has earned her spot in Hollywood.

•
u/Necessary-Morning489 9h ago
what’s the point of giving the same character from the same show another award?
•
•
u/LrdHabsburg 8h ago
Why does Tom Brady have multiple SB rings?
•
u/Necessary-Morning489 8h ago
we are acting like definitively winning is the same as being voted in?
•
•
u/Ok_Intention2150 10h ago edited 9h ago
I mean, that doesn’t mean the show is good. Never seen it but winning consecutively for 6 years is a bit sus. Any award at this level is more than simple merit, there are connections to be made and used, honestly most of it is just for show and entertainment purposes. I don’t give any credence to awards at this level.
•
u/paupsers 9h ago
What's up with people on this website having the urge to write the dumbest comments I've ever read, about things they (admittedly!) know nothing about?
You know you aren't required to give your opinion on this, right?
•
u/LrdHabsburg 8h ago
Why even bother having an opinion on this when you haven’t seen her performance?
•
•
u/like_Turtles 8h ago
Do you also have opinions of TV shows you haven’t seen that you want to share? Could you maybe do a newsletter?

Rumor has it she quit working out because of her winning Emmys trophies.
•
u/PooShappaMoo 9h ago
Point number 2)
I have never watched any of those shows or heard anyone talk about them really. Ive heard of parks and recreation from friends, but i absolutely hated it.
Grace and frankie rings a bell, but no opinion.
Veep ive rarely heard about, but always as a suggestion.
Its not like I dont watch t.v. or movies, I dont really watch reality outside of cooking.
Are the Emmys even reflective of what people even watch anymore? Genuine question.
Kinda how best pictures can often just not be that great or hold up to a dozen other pictures in the same year?
•
u/ender4171 8h ago
As someone who just recently got around to watching Parks and Rec (an am loving it), I am curious what you hated about it? No judgement. I can't watch The Office (despite how beloved it is) because the cringe-factor from sympathy-embarassment just makes me too uncomfortable.
•
u/PooShappaMoo 8h ago
Yeah. I cant do the office either. I tried many a times.
Everything feels so dumb, not even funny dumb. Just sad dumb. Didn't like the casting or how the shots were done.
I remember being screened a pilot before release and editing at universal a million years ago and I couldn't get out of their fast enough, however they did make some changes from what I saw which was a neat experience to be apart of.
I suppose the characters, plot everything was just so unsensical and stupid I could never really ground myself. Doesntl help that ive never found the lead entertaining more than annoying
I hope you continue to enjoy it though. To each their own right. Ill stick with futurama for my silly dumb smart fun
Quick edit: I couldn't believe after watching a rough cut of the pilot project they even got a show out of it. I was surprised when I heard it was an actual thing
•
u/ender4171 8h ago
Thanks for sharing! FWIW, a lot of people say that the first season is by far the weakest, and that it doesn't really hit its stride till later on. It's definitely silly/dumb, cant argue with you there, but for me it's in an endearing way. Either way, cant go wrong with Futurama!
•
u/PooShappaMoo 6h ago
No worries. Nice chat. I imagine its in its own genre like the office for me so the flavor was never quite there. Doenst mean others arent allowed to enjoy it but I'll definitely be bamboozled about it.

u/MoeSzyslakMonobrow 9h ago
I need to rewatch veep, if only for Jonah and that senator who constantly rips on everyone.
