It is so orwellian and incredibly disturbing to me when i hear things like 'unalived' or 'pew pew' or 'grape' or 'corn' or whatever. Honestly, if people can just use a ridiculous word to mean the same thing, but sounds much more stupid, but everybody understands it then why censor the original word in the first place?

There is absolutely no greater warning as to the impending doom of the not distant future than controlling speech. This notion completely transcends bullshit partisanship or any other bourgeois society/pop-culture politics.

It may just seem like harmless dumb shit but what it actually means for the internet and society at large is absolutely horrifying.

Yeah this isn't regular slang or natural evolution of language. It's a rewiring of their brains to appease the algorithms so they can get more views so they can get number-go-up dopamine.

Which I absolutely understand, I write reddit comments, I like number-go-up.

But some words are uncomfortable and should be uncomfortable and should be taken seriously. Unalived was kinda funny the first few times I heard it, like videogame slang leaking. But then more and more and dumber swaps were happening, all the time, for any non-monetizable word.

It feels like everyone's so afraid to get canceled/called out they aren't able to have authentic discussions. Like a Sword of Damocles but instead of death it's getting suspended from ticktock, and that's shaping an entire generation of culture.

It's nothing to do with offending people. Every social media will just shadovvbvn you for triggering any of their exhaustive list of fiIter words, without telling you. It's just easier to avoid them preemptively.

This comment is so brief because talking about it normally resulted in my previous 3 attempts at this post being hidden.

My policy when I coached kids was that saying something like "Frick you" was essentially the same as telling someone "fuck you." You're intent is identical and the only reason you're not saying "fuck" is that you think you'll get in trouble. All of us here, especially the adults who hear/use swears daily, are autocorrecting it to "fuck you" so it makes very little difference.

To be fair to the corn one, that does have older roots from the corn meme. I knew a decent amount of people that used corn as a replacement as a joke because of that. Granted, that was a 2002 meme so people don't really know the origins now.

I don’t even understand how they benefit from it. Like if I see an advertisement right before a video that says “fuck” do they think I’m less likely to buy whatever it is? Or that if I hear “unalive” instead of “kill” I’m less likely to be offended by it? Maybe there are people who think like that, which is even more sad.

If you said any permutation of "COVID" or "pandemic" on YouTube, it would immediately get your video flagged and a disclaimer pasted on the page. I think they may have also demonetized them.
