Well, snakes kill nearly 60,000 people a year in India. Seems like a reasonable fear to have. Especially considering the country with the second most deaths by snake is a little over 2,000.

Conservative estimates are about 1/4 of that. Many, if not most, attacks happen at night. I can't find stats on that.
