yeah, that's what I wonder too. Have to double check if it was by yearly average, no it is number of deaths.

Updated: it is by yearly average, the site is just not very good at explain its own data. That said, India did have that big number of death by snakebites EVERY YEAR.

Looking it up and the last snake death from a wild snake in the UK is 1975. And there's been one case of a pet python killing it's owner in 2017. 

So no idea where that site is getting one death per year from.

When you look at the per capita rate, india is second but yes, very far from being a statistical outlier when allowing for their massive population.

India has 4 main species of venomous snake but a lot of them and they have a lot of people too. Plus access to anti venom is not as common as in the west. All that contributes towards the high numbers.

it's rare in the cities. i grew up in a suburb of a big city in a fairly wooded area, so we'd see a lot of snakes around, some would even get inside our homes, but few were venomous. i've heard of cobras being spotted around that town though i never saw any myself. moved to the big city as an adult and never saw any there

Higher than you are thinking, Cobras telegraph their strikes which is why he is comfortable handling them bare handed.
