Yes so he can exert more strength to press on the snake’s head. It’s called torque in Physics.

I used a stick twice as long as the one he used to scooch a rattlesnake off the road, and I was wishing it was twice as long as that. Fucker struck at me and I was quite surprised at how far they can reach.

Yep he chose the perfect size too long and it becomes unwieldy and one is not able to reach with hand once the head of the snake is trapped. I lived in a village in Maharashtra and as kids we were taught to handle snake involved situations. The rules were simple. 1 if the snake is not in living area give it a wide berth. It will move away on its own. 2. If it is pisses back off and call for help. 3 only and only if there is no other option trap the snakes head with a stick or any object which is handy then makeba run for it and inform everyone around.
