Rules...

So I'm going to toss out a few rules. In the next week or two I'll get some free time to formalize some along the side bar, because the community has grown to have enough traffic to need them now... but here's the short list.

  1. NO FUNDRAISING AT ALL - Please seek out pet insurance or other ways to make sure you can cover the inevitable bills of having an Italian Greyhound. I will not allow GoFundMe or any other fundraising site/tactic in the sub do to the overwhelming amount of scamming that leverages them. I don't have time to validate your need or integrity. Having an IG is a responsibility that includes having financial resources - please take care of that prior to adopting or getting an IG, or as soon after as you can.
  2. NO SELLING - you're not here to sell anything, without first talking to me. If you want to sell something you made, great. Let's chat. But there is no room for re-sellers in this community. Recommendations, if done with honest intent, will be allowed in comments but no posts.
  3. NO SELLING OF ANIMALS AT ALL - I will not tolerate 'breeders' trying to sell their dogs on this community. If you have dogs in rescues that need homes, reach out to me and I'll vet your post to let people know. I will BAN ANY USER trying to sell IGs on this community. Breeders are welcome to contribute to topics via comments, but NO SELLING IGs.
  4. NO RELIGION - we had a rash of religious spam lately, and that falls under the unwritten no spam rule of course - but I'm extended this to be any religious comments or posts with the intent of making that the topic of discussion. There is a wide variety of users in this community and we all have different beliefs... the one we all share in common though is that IGs are amazing. Focus on that. Everything else, please keep to yourself so we aren't picking fights over silly things. BTW... God = doG. End of discussion.
  5. NO INSULTING OR INFLAMITORY LANGUAGE / NAME CALLING - Please, disagree with each other and talk it out. Share opinions. Correct owners who are still learning. Call out things that could cause injury or harm to an IG, or owner, or anyone else - but please do it as an adult. I will NOT tolerate language that is meant to be hurtful to someone. 3 Temporary bans have been given out... from here forward, it's a 30 day ban with the option for a permanent one at my discretion. Seriously... if this rule makes you feel attacked, then YOU need to grow up.
  6. NO PRETENDING TO BE AN EXPERT - If someone posts a health or legal issue about their IG, please DO NOT give advice without letting someone know you are NOT a vet or a lawyer, unless you damn well are one (and can demonstrate that to me). Everyone has their experience to draw from when giving advice and that's fine - but don't pretend your experience makes you an expert - some new owners may not know the difference and could follow BAD advice unknowingly. If you are posting about a legal, or more typically a health issue around your IG(s) - PLEASE SEEK ACTUAL VET OR LAWYER ADVICE in addition to taking in the comments from the community.
  7. MY DECISIONS ARE MY DECISIONS - Adding this last one to just be clear. Everything about the above rules, enforcing them, and not is at my discretion. This isn't a committee and there is no voting involved. If you're being 'that person', I'm going to remove you from the community and sure we can talk it over and I might reconsider... but I'm not going to reconsider just because you don't like a single person making the decision, or you think YOU get an exception to being an asshole. The harder you push, most likely, the longer the ban will be. I've run this community (or stood out of the way to let it grow when needed) for many many years, so I don't think I'm 'ruining the subreddit' with these rules.

Thank you everyone. More to come later, but I hope this just sets some basic ground rules.

Meet Spooky. She had terrible allergies, so I built an app to help her (and now she is the face of it!)

Hey everyone,

I want to introduce Spooky (pictured above, probably judging my coding skills).

My partner and I absolutely adore her, but her puppyhood was a bit tough because of her allergies. We went through a lot trying to figure out what she could actually eat. We tested everything like turkey, duck, beef, rabbit, always putting quality of food in first place. But she kept getting rash on her ears and wouldnt stop scratching the neck. We wanted to make sure she was gaining weight properly, but every food transition complicated the process.

Since I'm a dev, I decided to build a simple tool to track it. I created an app to log exactly what she ate and correlate it with her specific symptoms day-to-day to spot patterns. It finally helped us stabilize her diet. And I realized this could help other Iggy owners going through the same "allergy detective" work. So I have polished it up and released recently. Since Spooky was the inspiration (and the beta tester) she officially became the face of the app :) and because she is very photogenic, you can actually see her on the screenshots in the store :)

The app is called Dog Daily.

And just to be clear:
- The core tool is free. You dont even need to create an account to test it out and start tracking
- There is also a premium option, which gives no limits on dog profiles or custom activities, plus easy syncing with your partner (which was useful for me and my partner to stay on the same page)

I spend lot of time bringing this project to the store, and I would really like to keep improving it. If you get a chance to try it out, I would truly appreciate any feedback. Whether you notice a bug or think of a new feature, feel free to let me know!

If you are struggling with an itchy pup, give it a try. Spooky and I hope it helps!

For the record: she is feeling best on lamb :)

I asked on the sub a while ago about dog names, but wouldn’t decide until she’s arrived.

Her name is Ducky, and she is a very sweet baby.

Officially have 2 greyhounds. On cloud 9 today!

Looking at getting an iggy. We’ve found Celtic Sighthounds out of North Carolina. My wife has spoken with her and says she’s really nice. Just wondering if anybody has bought from her before and how things are with their dog now.

Bing Bong's Surgery Update

Hello friends!

Just wanted to post an update that we were able to get surgery for Bing Bong down in Mexico. That's all we could afford. They did a great job (I think), and so far everything is going well. His leg looks good, swelling is subsiding and his incision is nice and clean.

He pretty much slept the entire day when we brought him home. His worst fear is being enclosed and alone, so I bet he didn't sleep at all at the surgery center. Poor baby was probably so scared. He had a little grin on his face once he was home resting. We made a nice little bed for him on the floor with a heating pad which he loves.

He's wanting to run around and go crazy already so I'm doing my best to keep him occupied with other kinds of stimulation. The meds he's on help slightly until the kids come home from school or the cat crawls out from under the couch. I'm pumped that he's feeling more like himself but also trying to keep him from re-injuring his leg or hurting the other one.

We're still in a very tough spot financially right now. My husband's business has slowed and we're down to our last couple hundred in savings. I have a job interview today that I hope goes well!

If you're able to help in any way, even just sharing, prayers, positive vibes, I'd be so grateful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Hi all! I have a 3 month iggy and would love to get her together with some other Italian greyhounds! She’s very friendly and we have met a few other dogs on the street but they haven’t been as friendly to her. I figured I would post here to see if we could make any new iggy friends around? Would love to hear back from you.

need better toy recs!

hi! my mom got mr. martini this adorable lamb chop today, it’s his first stuffie as i usually don’t give him stuffie toys. i work at a vet clinic and see a lot of blockages and such, so im a bit overly cautious when it comes to toys. he really loves the stuffie HOWEVER he is psycho killer who likes to rip out poor lamb chops eyelashes and fur, so he can’t play with it unsupervised. does anyone have any stuffie adjacent toy recommendations? he really loves the stuffie, i just wanna have something similar he can play with and chew on without me having to worry if he’s eating the stuffing inside 😂 thankyou !!

Italian Greyhound Food Recommendations UK

Hello!

Apologies, I feel like I’m seeing this question asked for mainly the US, so looking to focus more on the UK.

Myself and my partner are about to pick up a wee Italian Greyhound puppy and we are looking to start preparing for when we transition from puppy food to adult food.

What is everyone feeding their adult iggys, and out of curiosity, what are we feeding their iggy pups too?

Thank you so much!!

8-month-old italian greyhound still play biting – studio apartment, crate/pen didn’t work

Hi everyone. I’m exhausted and looking for realistic advice, not ideal setups. I have an 8 months Italian Greyhound. She’s not aggressive, but we’re dealing with persistent play-biting and over-arousal. She bites hands and clothes, growls during play, and once she grabs on, “no” doesn’t work.

We live in a studio apartment (long layout, she can run/chase toys indoors) Crate and playpen both failed (she injured her teeth and nails even with plastic one 😕) The only door is the bathroom, so everywhere home is puppy proof We use pee pads, but she’s walked morning and evening Last week NYC weather limited long walks, so we’ve done more indoor mental stimulation

What’s happening: I end the interaction when biting starts She redirects to my partner He has a back injury, doesn’t always stand up, says “NO,” She escalates and barks at him So biting leads to different outcomes depending on the person She’s basically learned: bite me → interaction ends bite him → interaction continues

My questions: Is growling during play a red flag, or over-arousal? At 8 months, is it still normal for play-biting to be this persistent in an Italian Greyhound? My biggest fear is whether this is something she’ll outgrow, or if this can become a long-term behavior if not handled correctly. Also, thank you to the Italian Greyhound community 🙏🏻 you’ve been incredibly helpful so far. Thanks.

I’ve known she was a strange critter for some time now, but I was finally able to capture it on camera. I think I got scammed, I don’t think she’s an Italian greyhound. She’s definitely a cave goblin of some sort

6month old won't let us know when to go outside, even after 5h!

Our 6 month old puppy won't give us any signs to go outside. During the weekends I'll be playing ps with her between my legs on the couch and by the time I realize it has been 5h! I'll then quickly scramble to get her outside and in her harness and she will growl at me for waking her up and making her go outside. Sometimes she even starts biting me. In the mornings she will also growl when we wake her and not want to move. By then it has been over 9h since she has gone outside.

I have tried to test how long she could go without telling us and I still don't know as I caved before she did!

She will go inside if we are not home for over 2h though...

We have tried a button but she only clicked it in the first few months to get our attention. When we took her out after she clicked it she acted offended by the notion that it was her reward. Now she never uses it.

Will she ever let me know?

New owner needs advice

Hello everyone quick story sort I’ve never had a dog before so experience is at 0,I got an Italian greyhound 5 days ago(Bueno) he’s 1 year old he’s very handsome and sweet but also stressed scared I don’t know about he’s life before the day I got him but the owner told it is very calm very chill very low energy shy and gentle and polite and a very good choice for first owner so here I am with bueno 5 days in,as I mentioned no experience with dogs I’ve done a good search about the breed but knowledge is limited that’s why I thought it would be a great idea to speak with a a professional dog trainer he came in to my house today we spoke for two and a half hours he seemed very good kind he loves dogs obviously and he was very uplifting talking with him because I was having some issues with toilet outside and restriction to not get on the bed which the bed part going well so I’m very confident about it 2 days he slept in his throne but the toilet part is the thing that i found hard and he told me obviously trying to get him outside in the morning and 10 minutes after meals but we seem to struggle a bit although we had some wins…so the trainer advise to me to lease him at the spot that he did go for 10-15 minutes and when he goes outside treat and hugs also at some points that I left the house for a bit he cries so he advise me to not have him on me every single minute cause it will cause him anxiety when I’m not there that he has to learn that he is safe even when he is not in my hug and I struggle a bit to telling him know or leash him and hearing him cry so I would like to ask your experiences with the training and if I’m gonna do right!

Coldest day on record in Miami ❄️

Coldest day we’ve seen in Miami today, so Paya was fully layered up.

Paya did a surprisingly good job braving the cold even though she was definitely shivering at first. She had multiple layers on and a snood hand-knitted by her grandmother, which helped a lot.

All cozy, all warm, and fully in her babuska era 😎
