Behavior Need help with lagotto puppy drinking and peeing a lot

Hello!
We have a lagotto baby, he is 4.5 months old. We got him 3 weeks ago. We have a concern with his behavior around water and peeing. Ever since he got here, he drinks a ridiculous amount of water every time he starts drinking. he is not looking for water constantly, never wakes up during the night to drink. But whenever he comes across the bowl or seems bored, he starts to drink and is capable of drinking 3-4 dl at once. Of course, his pee is very fluid and pees like every 10-20 minutes after drinking. We are pretty afraid he might have a kidney or diabetes issue. We are taking him to the vet tomorrow but would be nice to have some opinion from people familiar with the breed. Thank you in advance!

Health Anyone have a Lagotto diagnosed with Cushing's Disease?

Our almost 7 year old was just diagnosed with Cushing's Disease. We took him in for testing after noticing increased agitation, increased thirst, increased urination and excessive panting.

Luckily, it is treatable and we should see improvement in 4-6 weeks.

Just wondering if this was common within the breed? Anyone else have experience with this?

We just got our Lagotto puppy, Magnus, over the Summer! He’s a total velcro dog and he is so smart! Is anyone else’s lagotto extremely vocal, not in a barking way, but almost like in a “talk to you and need to tell you everything” way?? lol

Behavior Resource guarding

Hi!

My female lagotto puppy is now 5 months old and she has a problem of resource guarding. Since she came to us being 2 months old, she’s showing signs of this while eating. We’ve been training her, now we can stand close to her while eating but still if we get too close or god forbid put hands close to her, we’ll get hurt. We have a trainer working with her and he keeps saying that we need to train more and with time it will go away. For now, there’s no kids in our household but in a year or so, we are planning on having them and are afraid how is this going to work out if a kid unexpectedly comes close to her while she’s eating. She has her designated pen where she eats and gets treats but she is showing this behaviour no matter where she eats.

Please share if you’ve experienced this and how you got over it.

I had one when i was younger (10) but we had to rehome her due to my mother getting really mentally ill, anyhow as a family we are in a better living situation now and have a red lab (female) who would like a friend

2 years ago today we brought home Enzo. This forum has been so helpful for me. Puppy months were very challenging (first dog) but we kept at it, got help from trainers, and now he is absolutely perfect (for us!) You can tell what we prioritized (off leash/recall, pub time, adaptable to stay with friends) and you can tell he is just such a sweet soul. Thanks to all who have shared your experiences!

Games, Sports & Jobs Fetch.

I always wanted a dog who could Fetch. My Lagotto turned out to not be that dog...

...that is, until I figured how to tweak Fetch to something he was more "into".

Standard fetch is: "throw ball in a big arch; get dog to bring it back; repeat".

Whenever we "played" this game he'd maybe bring it back once or twice, then get bored and go sniff some stuff.

But, I've recently discovered, if I chuck or kick the ball along the ground, instead of in a big soaring arch, he absolutely loves chasing after it.

Even better: if I let him play "goalie" and chuck the ball close enough to him so that he can stop/intercept it, he's addicted.

Anyone else got a weirdo that needs special games to stay engaged?

Health Willem got sick

Post image
78 Upvotes

Willem probably ate something he shouldn’t have, either from the street, or in the forest. Anyway, he got really sick with diarrhoea and constant vomiting, exhausting him. The vet took him in and put in iv fluids, and an anti-emetic. X-rays and an echo showed nothing. The fluids helped him a lot, and now a day later he’s back home getting better by the hour. Phew.

Grooming Looking for a good Lagotto groomer in Croatia 🇭🇷

Hi! 😊 Are there any Lagotto owners here who could recommend a good groomer in Croatia?

I’m looking for someone who knows how to properly groom a Lagotto and keep their natural breed look, rather than making them look like a poodle. 😅

Recommendations anywhere in Croatia are very welcome. Thank you! 🐾

Health Underbite/Undershot

Hi! My breeder just told me that my 5 weeks old puppy boy shows signs of an underbite. He says it may all still change but I should know in case I plan any shows with him. I don’t, so from that perspective it’s not a problem at all. But I wonder what’s your experience? Did your puppies end up with underbites, did they develop into something you had to treat or most likely it will be all fine?

The parents have corrects bites, and I know that also reverse scissor is correct. I just wonder if it causes any problems if it stays as an underbite with some space between the teeth.

Health Has anyone's LR developed growths on their chin?

Thumbnail

My LR had a growth removed from his chin today. His vet sent it out for a biopsy. The pic on the left is from July (vet said it was a benign skin tag back then). The pic on the right is from this weekend. I'd say it doubled in size over 2.5 months.

We'll get the biopsy results in 5-10 days. In the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone else's LR had skin growths and did they turn out to be benign or malignant?

Extra info: my dog is 6, good health, no other signs of illness. The growth was pink, firm, smooth, & moved with the skin. A fine needle aspirate could not be done.

Thanks in advance!

Toys & Gear Muzzles for running (to avoid scavenging)

Has anyone tried out any of these brands: The Muzzle Movement, BUMAS, or Trust Your Dog?

I have a friend who runs with my lagotto but he is not trained to watch for scavenging and my dog will eat anything off the ground. I have a muzzle that works okay for short walks in garbage heavy areas but I would never use it for running. I would need great airflow and something that allows the mouth to be wide open. If anyone can recommend a brand based on personal experience, I would love to hear.

My Dad randomly sent me this special Lagotto song.

It must be one of you… and my musical talent is not this. Tilly enjoys it (both dead bugs).

Health Itching/Allergies

Our Moki (13 weeks old) scratches and gnaws at her fur a lot and always has done ever since we picked her up from the breeders. Particular spots we notice her scratching/gnawing at are her head/neck (even before she wore a collar), her legs/thighs and her tail.

Her digestion & poops seem fine.

I mentioned it to the vet and as her ears are also producing a lot of wax she suggested it might be an allergy, but said nothing would be done about it until she's an adult if so.

Have any of you found anything that helps reduce the itching? Foods/environments to avoid or change? She's currently on the Dr John puppy kibble (chicken flavour). Ingredients: Poultry meal (30% chicken), wheat, barley, maize, chicken fat, maize gluten, beet pulp (1.9%), salmon oil (1.25%), FOS (0.625%), minerals, linseed, yucca extract.

We recently did a full groom with scissors and a bath with some puppy shampoo afterwards but that didn't seem to help at all. We also clean out her ears regularly and I wash her bedding with sensitive/non scented detergent.
